Brereton, CB & KH", with regulation pattern Rifle Regiment steel hilt with sharkskin grip. GC (some wear and dark patina overall, no scabbard).Note: William Brereton had a most distinguished military career: He was commissioned 2nd Lt (1805), promoted 1st Lt (1806). His Peninsular War service included the defence of Cadiz, Siege of San Sebastian, Barossa, (wounded), Vittoria, Orthes, Toulouse. With D Troop Royal Horse Artillery he was present at Quatre Bras and Waterloo (severely wounded). Saw service in the China campaign attacking Canton. Promoted Colonel 1851, served aboard HMS Britannia at Sevastopol supervising the rocket batteries during the first bombardment of Sevastopol (December 1854). Created KH (1837), CB (1838), KCB (1861), died 1864.£250-350
