A KOSHIRA-E (MOUNTING) FOR A KATANA (LONG SWORD)Edo period (1615-1868), mid-19th centuryThe saya (scabbard) finished in black lacquer worked in the style of Shibata Zeshin with seigaihanuri (combed wave patterns), the tsuka (hilt) covered in same (rayskin) with lacquered black leather tsukamaki wrapping in lozenge pattern, the principal metal fittings comprising kashira (pommel), menuki (hilt grips), fuchi (collar), tsuba (hand guard), and kojiri (butt piece), the fuchigashira shibuichi chiselled in relief and with inlay of gold, silver, and shakudo depicting rustic huts, rice stooks, and mountains, signed Zuichi Seisha ni oite Goto Kiyoaki (b. 1815, Haynes 3222) with a kao, the menuki of shakudo, shibuichi, gold, and silver in the form of a samurai, rocks, and bamboo grass, the tsuba almost circular, chiselled in relief with gold and shakudo details depicting a waterside landscape, signed Choshu Hagi no ju Tomohisa Bushu Edo ni oite kore o horu, Bunka juichi inudoshi nigatsu hi (Made in the second month of 1814 in Edo, Musashi Province, by Tomohisa of Hagi, Nagato Province), the kojiri iron, inlaid in gold with a poem; held together by a wood tsukuri blade; with a silk brocade storage bag. 101.6cm (40in) long.
