Ca. 1368-1644 AD. Chinese Ming Dynasty Attendant Figure. An elaborately crafted warrior attendant figure dressed and orange armour, with a tall conical helmet with a light coloured tassel, possibly meant to imitate horse hair. The warrior holds a sword and is posed as if he is about to draw it from its scabbard. Attendant figures such as this item were important to a variety of cultures with afterlife beliefs which involved trials, travels, or an afterlife similar to that which was lived on earth. These figures, which are included as funerary offerings reflect the belief that assistance would be helpful in overcoming the difficult environs of the afterlife. Private Collection of Julian Glover - Ivanhoe (1982) - the original screen used prop sword as worn by Richard I (Richard The Lion Heart) in the movie, as played by Julian Glover. The sword of steel construction, with wound leather grip, shaped circular pommel and pierced cross decoration the crossguard. Housed within its original wooden leather covered scabbard. The sword in good condition, showing signs of use during production, with some dents to the edge (likely deliberate). Supplied with a photograph of Mr Glover with this sword, and a short handwritten note from Mr Glover. Measures approx; 117cm tall. Rare screen used prop sword.
