A sword and scabbard of Royal Naval 1805 pattern type, with brass furniture and stirrup hilt with lion's head terminal and langet engraved with a fouled anchor, with straight 32inch fullered and polished steel blade; black leather scabbard with brass furnitureNote: By family repute said to have belonged to Admiral William Taylor (1760-1842), who as a midshipman accompanied Captain James Cook on his third voyage. He was made commander, on 21 January 1783, and was given command of the brig-sloop HMS Pelican and made post in September 1793 and commanded mostly sloops and frigates. After about 1801 he seems to have been beached though he was promoted to flag rank in 1811. This is corroborated. Please note, the catalogued description now reads ;A sword and scabbard of Royal Naval 1805 pattern type'. The original description read 'A Royal Naval Officer's 1805 pattern service sword...'Condition Report: White leather grip almost certainly a more recent refurbishment and very possibly the leather of the scabbard too. The grip should be shagreen. Probably been refurbished.Condition Report Disclaimer
