TWO VICTORIAN 1842 PATTERN PERCUSSION MUSKETS Each with lock-plate engraved "Tower 1844" under crowned VR cipher, the stocks also dated 1844 with Board of Ordnance Broad Arrow stamp, the brass butt-plates engraved respectively "C 8722" and "C 71431"(?), the barrels measuring approx. 67.5cm in length, each being fitted with a socket bayonet with triangular tapering steel blade, housed in a brass-mounted leather scabbard (2) Condition Report:"Action on both muskets is poor. One will not hold half or full-cock, though the spring is strong. The other will hold half and full-cock but is very stiff and with a weak and sluggish action, failing to properly strike the cap.Otherwise, both muskets are heavily worn. Barrels, mechanisms, ramrods, suspension loops etc. all with surface rust. One barrel is rusted rather more severely, leaving the surface rough and pitted in a number of areas. Stocks are battered, with deep divots and scratches generally. One with a spliced-in repair near to muzzle. Leather bayonet scabbards with much deterioration/drying to surface."
A WW2 JAPANESE OFFICER'S SHIN GUNTO SWORD The brass tsuba cast with floral detail and mounted beneath a similarly styled fuchi, the grip of white ray skin adorned with floral cast menuki with traditional ito wrap, the kashira of corresponding design to the fuchi, the lacquered saya with patinated tan leather outer casing; the polished blade measuring approx. 68cm in length, the whole approx. 100cm (sheathed) Provenance: Acquired by Robert Hogarth (1914-87) following his release from the Japanese Stanley Civilian Camp in Hong Kong, where he was interned from December 1941 until the end of the War. Following his release, he served as Superintendent of Mails in Hong Kong, residing permanently there until his retirement to Scotland in the 1960s. Thence by family descent. Condition Report:Blade in a genrally tarnished condition, with patches of light surface rust. Cutting edge with a significant nick towards tip, with other lesser damage elsewhere along its length. Tsuba with some bashes/dents and sitting a little loose on the tang. Ito wrap generally worn through handling, with marks in places; beginning to fray near kashira. Minor damage to the shagreen grip surrounding the mekugi. Cast metal embellishments are well patinated and have a little play. Leather cladding of scabbard is scuffed, marked and has small tears in places. Popper-fastened strap at opening has torn off. Multiple losses to the lacquer of the inner wooden scabbard.
A 19th CENTURY ITALIAN 1860 PATTERN CAVALRY SABRE The fullered blade measuring approx. 89cm in length and housed in a steel scabbard, the ricasso stamped "S&K" (Schnitzler & Kirschbaum) and "PF" verso, the grip of leather and partially wire-wound Condition Report:Scabbard is heavily tarnished, with widespread surface rust. Likewise, the guard and pommel. Sword is resistant to leave scabbard towards its tip. A large loss to leather grip, revealing the wound cord beneath. Most of wire outer winding is also lost. Grip and guard are firmly affixed to blade, with no play. Blade is unsharpened, with tarnish along much of its length and spots of light surface rust. Minor nicks to cutting edge.
A WW2 JAPANESE NAVAL OFFICER'S KAI GUNTO SWORD The tang stamped "20", with anchor device closer to habaki, the grip wrapped in black shagreen, lacking ito and mekugi, with tsuba also absent, the saya with black ray skin covering, gilt floral cast mounts throughout; the blade measuring approx. 67cm in length, the whole approx. 96cm (sheathed) Condition Report:Sword lacks many elements, as shown in photos. Lacking mekugi, the grip slides loose upon the tang. Blade is finger-marked and grubby along its length but is otherwise in good general condition. Habaki is covered with an oily residue, presumably applied to ease to sword's removal from its scabbard. The one present seppa with light surface rust (this is stamped "20", corresponding to the number stamped on the tang). Shagreen grip is split down its seam and separating from the wood beneath. Fuchi is also loose (stamped "20" internally). All cast metal components are tarnished/patinated. Ray skin scabbard cladding with general wear/scuffs. One suspension loop (obi tori) appears to have been reaffixed higher than was originally the case, exposing a screw hole.
A CHINESE SHUANG JIAN DOUBLE SHORT SWORD with a 45cm straight steel blade and a brass hilt with grooved wood grips, in its tortoiseshell covered scabbard with brass mounts, overall 63cm long. Condition Report : Scabbard worn, with some splits, and lacking tip mount. MILITARIA - A BRITISH 1912 PATTERN CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD retailed by by J.R. Gaunt, the 89cm straight blade etched with the Royal arms, 'GR V' cypher, and foliate decoration, and further etched 'CAPT. F. WICKSTEED', marked at the ricasso 'J.R. GAUNT & SON / LIMITED / LATE / EDWARD THURKLE / LONDON / & / BIRMINGHAM', the back edge numbered '14077', the steel bowl hilt chased and engraved with scrolling foliage, with a fish-skin grip, and a chequered pommel, in a brown leather covered service scabbard, overall 110cm long. Condition Report : Blade and hilt with some surface rust.
