An interesting Italian fascist 2nd model MVSN dagger, with plated brass crosspiece and plated steel pommel cap, the dark wood hilt well carved with a head wearing steel helmet (Mussolini?) with eagles flying above, “116 Legion Alpina”, “2 Divisione 28 Ottobre”, “Centurione Ponzone Pierino”, “49 Legione San Marco”, etc, in its steel sheath embossed with fasces and “MVSN”. Basically GC (grip split, sheath rusted overall); also a WWII German KAR 98 bayonet with wooden grips, in a brass mounted Italian carcano scabbard. QGC. (2)
A post 1902 RN Midshipman’s dirk, SE blade 18½”, by J R Gaunt & Son, late Edward Thurkle, 53 Conduit St, London W (the firm’s address 1906-18), etched with crowned fouled anchor, R Arms and motto within oak wreaths, scrolled panels, regulation brass hilt, acorn finial crossguard with crowned fouled anchor in wreath to centre, lion’s head pommel and backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its brass mounted leather scabbard with locking clip to hilt. A Dyak headhunter’s sword mandau, curved blade 21”, of traditional form, swollen towards tip, 2 narrow fullers, ornamental back edge inlaid with brass bands, carved bone stylized bird’s head grip (1” section of back missing), in its rattan bound wooden scabbard with suspension loop and tassels. GC (some wear)
A Sudanese sword, kaskara, triple fullered blade 38”, etched with stylized Arabic inscription for whole length, traditional hilt, in leather scabbard, and another, flat blade 34”, inscribed panels at forte, traditional hilt, crocodile skin scabbard (does not fully enter scabbard). Basically GC (some wear and damage). (2)
A ramblers patent walking stick/bow saw, 36½” overall, containing a concealed 27” saw blade which folds away in the haft when not in use; a Blackwell’s Patent dog walkers walking stick, the plated brass handle incorporating a whistle and spring clip for attaching to the collar (haft AF); a Japanese carved bamboo walking stick; a sword scabbard (FC); a wooden ramrod for muzzle loading gun (AF); 2 rifle stock blanks; a shotgun butt; several incomplete cleaning rods; and a made up copper shot flask. A good Javanese kris, straight watered blade 13½”, nicely polished facetted hilt, with a little carving on the inner edge, in studded gilt and silver cup, polished grained scabbard, the lower section covered in sheet brass, embossed overall on the front with flowers and foliage. Near VGC Plate 5
A 19th century courtsword, slender flattened diamond section blade, 29½”, studded brass hilt with double turned up shell guard, crossguard, knucklebow, flattened urn shaped pommel and swollen square section grip, in its brass mounted leather scabbard. GC (minor wear and light pitting, scabbard leather crazed)
An interesting hunting sword, evidently a conversion of a French cavalry officer’s sword c 1785, captured during the Napoleonic wars, broad, slightly curved shallow fullered blade 29½”, with a little original scroll etching towards the forte, the back of the blade removed and the edge saw backed for most of its length, gilt double shell and loop guard with knucklebow, the sidebars removed, cap shaped pommel, leather grip (most wire missing) inside of guard engraved with English owner’s initials “WH”, in its leather scabbard with long brass chape and leather locket; see Wagner “Cut and Thrust Weapons” p 311 and Blair “European and American Arms” p 103(b) for similar originals. Basically GC, the hilt retaining approx 15% original gilt (some wear overall, hilt a little misshapen and one loop broken)
