An officer’s service sword, c 1810, of Captain Charles Diggle, 52nd Regiment, plain curved, shallow fullered blade 31”, steel stirrup hilt with pronounced knucklebow, the langets engraved with strung bugle and “52” on one side and “Captain Charles Diggle” on the other, plain pronounced forward sloping pommel and backstrap, wire bound leather grip, in its leather scabbard with lightly line engraved steel locket, middle band and chape, with 2 rings. A late 18th century French naval cutlass, curved, shallow fullered blade, 25”, with narrow back fuller to centre section, stamped with an anchor on one side at forte, and “AWF” on backstrap, solid brass hilt, the heavy flat crosspiece stamped with a small anchor mark on the flat quillon and “AWF” (twice) underneath, plain knucklebow, broad flat upward tapering sideguard, simple cap shaped pommel with prominent stud, plain backstrap, ribbed grip, in its leather scabbard with plain chape and locket stamped with a small anchor above the belt loop. A Victorian officer’s sword of The Royal Artillery, slightly curved, fullered blade 32" by Wilkinson, no 11276 (for 1861) on backstrap, nicely etched with crowned VR cypher on one side and winged lightning with scrolls “Royal” and “Artillery” on the other, all in tightly scrolled panels, with owner’s crest, motto and initials “CL” on one side at forte, steel hilt with knucklebow, sideloop and 2 sidebars, forward sloping stepped pommel, chequered thumbpiece to backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its scabbard with 2 rings; with photostat details of Sir Charles Larcom, including copy of entry in Wilkinson’s register for 1861, small head and shoulders photo in full dress, entry in Burkes Peerage, etc. Good Condition, a clean example. An interesting 19th century Sudanese sword kaskara, the scabbard formed from the head and skin of a baby crocodile, flat blade 37½”, with shallow triple central fuller, plain iron crossguard and small langets, cord bound grip, leather pommel, crocodile skin scabbard, the head uppermost, legs folded at the centre section, head and feet complete with teeth and claws. Good Condition. Plate 32
A Borneo head hunter’s sword, mandau, blade 18½” with pierced and serrated back edge and inlaid with brass circles and stars, with rattan bound carved bone hilt with sparse hair tufts, in its rattan bound wood scabbard with plaited suspension cords. An early 19th century officer’s sword of The 52nd (Oxfordshire Light Infantry) Regiment, curved flat blade 31½”, etched in plain panels on one side with crowned Royal Arms, supporters and motto, and on the other side with crown, strung bugle, “LII” and wreath (etching faint), gilt stirrup hilt with ornamental langets bearing strung bugle, crossguard, facetted knucklebow, flattened lion’s head pommel into backstrap facetted at the lower end, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel flattened diamond section scabbard (minor dents) with 2 rings on crosslet mounts. Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 50% original gilt. Plate 43
A rare Third Reich TeNo (Technische Nothilfe) Leader’s dagger, the blade etched with the TeNo eagle and original Eickhorn logo, and numbered 0970, the hilt with oxidised silver finish, orange grip and silver bullion portepee, in its scabbard, the iron throat also numbered 0970 (slightly indistinct owing to pitting of the throat), with its original dress pattern hanging straps, with distinctive cogwheel buckles. Good Condition. Bowman describes this as “probably one of the rarest of the Third Reich production daggers”, as the numbers produced were relatively small.
An Edward VII cavalry officer’s sword, very slightly curved, fullered blade 35" by Wilkinson, no 42335 (for 1909) on backstrap, etched in Union wreath panels on one side with crowned Royal Arms and on the other with crowned Ed VII cypher and owner’s initials “P.G.D”, Wilkinson’s “Patent Solid Hilt”, the semi bowl guard pierced with 1821 style “scroll pattern”, chequered pommel and backstrap, chequered composition grips, in its plated (minor wear and rust speckles) scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition (minor wear to blade and light pitting to hilt).Plate 38
A 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, dated 1798, broad curved shallow fullered blade 32½”, marked “Osborn’s Warranted 1798” at forte, and etched on one side with trophy of arms, crowned GR cypher, pre 1801 Royal Arms with supporters and motto, and GB (Owner’s ?) cypher, and on the other side with motto scrolls “Ducit Amor Patriae”, LLVC monogram (Loyal Lincoln, Loyal Leicester ?), wand of Aesculapius with mace and dividers, and a standing female figure holding a winged hand, steel stirrup hilt with langets, plain facetted backstrap and lower band to wirebound leather grip. In its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition (contemporary repairs to top of knucklebow). Plate 42 £350-500
†A United States infantry officer’s sword, c 1900, slender curved plated blade 30”, etched on one side with Gothic capitals “US” and trophies of arms in foliate scrolls, and on the other with American eagle, trophy and blank escutcheon in scrolls, slender plated hilt, the knucklebow with 3 sidebars, plain panelled pommel and backstrap, finger shaped composition grip, leather knot, in its plated scabbard with 2 rings, and calf skin bag (torn). Good Condition, the plating very good (hilt a little mis-shapen). Plate 39
A most interesting English made American style dirk named to an Ensign of The 89th Regiment and evidently associated with that regiments part in the American War of 1812-14, curved blade 13", double edged at point and etched for three quarters of its length with foliate panels, on one side incorporating trophy of drum, polearms and flags, and on the other cannon, shield and polearms, copper gilt hilt, the crossguard in the form of an entwined serpent, chain link guard (replaced), American eagle head pommel and backstrap, finely diced ivory grip, in its black leather sheath with copper gilt locket, middle band and chape, all nicely engraved with lined, foliate panels, the locket also incorporating a trophy of flags and spears with Union flag in oval, and also engraved at the top “Ensign Johnson 89th Regt”, the chape incorporating a shield on trophy of flags, maker’s name on back of locket “Salter, sword cutler to HRH the Duke of Sussex, 35 Strand”, 2 suspension rings. Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 20% gilt, the scabbard mounts approximately 80% (hilt and scabbard locket a little loose). Plate 41
An interesting Victorian infantry officer’s 1845 pattern sword with steel hilt, slightly curved fullered blade 32½”, by Wilkinson, no 9365 (for 1858), etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher in foliate scrolled panels, steel hilt of regulation pattern incorporating crowned VR cypher, stepped pommel and backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings; with extensive photostat material showing the sword with “steel gilt hilt” was sold to Edward Gunter, 59th Regt, in November 1858, full details and diary extracts for Gunter, who retired at Lt. Col in 1888 and subsequently served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (Canada), etc. Good Condition. Plate 38 £300-400
An unusual 1796 pattern sword for an Irish light cavalry officer, curved, shallow fullered blade 30”, with spear point, by J Read, Dublin, etched on one side with crown, Irish harp and trophy, and on the other with standing Britannia and trophy, both sides surmounted by a foliate bonnet device, gilt stirrup hilt with rounded triangular langets each bearing a prominent applied lion’s head, facetted knucklebow, lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound leather grip, in its black leather scabbard with gilt brass locket, middle band and chape with 2 rings, the locket engraved I. Read, College Green. Very Good Condition, the blade retaining approximately 70% blueing and gilding, the hilt 80% gilt, and the scabbard mounts 20% gilt.
