Gaunt & Son (late Edward Thurkle) London & B/ham, c. 1916, having nickel-steel blade with etched relief design incorporating Royal Standard armorial, makers name, owners name inscribed initial for W.R. Bond, and with nickel-plated basket-hilt of pierced format with further Royal armorial monogram “GVR” with crown surmounting and with applied silver-plated “RFC” badge to front, the hilt-handle of shagreen with bullion wire-twist decoration and machine-engraved cross-hatching to nickel-plated pommel, complete with original hard-leather and nickel-plated scabbard, length 39in (99cm) (1)

Signing up to Military Service with the Royal Engineers during the inter-war years and serving most of his time in India and the Far-east, when as acting-Captain Frederick Cook was shot & wounded ed in action and hospitalised during 1942 with a bullet lodged in his spine. Following an X-ray, this was considered too difficult to remove, and he was subsequently discharged back into service, continuing until he left the Military in 1961, and enjoyed further long and active life in retirement. The bullet was never removed even after further X-rays were taken in 1962. The original 1942 and 1962 X-rays are included in this lot. (-)
