A Mid-Shipman's Dirk Commemorating The Battle Of The Nile By John Gill, Early 19th Century With broad curved blade (old pitting) retaining some original polish and double-edged towards the point, etched and gilt against the remains of a blued ground over two thirds of its length on one side with the maker's name in an oval and the figure of Britannia between foliage, and along the other with a classical martial trophy between a wreath of laurel and foliage, ormolu-mounted hilt comprising side-guard cast, pierced and chased with a crocodile, recurved lobed quillons, one (the other missing) retaining the remains of the knuckle-chain, pommel formed in the round as a crocodile-head, and ivory grip bound with twisted copper wire, in its original leather scabbard (old damage) with linear engraved ormolu mounts (one suspension ring missing), and retaining much of its original gilding 31.7 cm. blade Footnotes: On the night of 3 August 1798 two days after the Battle of the Nile, the captains of the fleet met abroad the Orion and inaugurated the 'Egyptian Club'. A document was drawn up, and signed by all present, inviting Nelson to accept the gift of a sword and to have his portrait painted. This dirk was almost certainly acquired by a mid-shipman who served during the Battle of the Nile as a memento of that great event. For more information see Commander W.R. May & P.G. The Prince Of Wales, 55 Charing Cross, London, Circa 1800 With straight tapering fullered blade bright over half its length and double-edged towards the point (some pitting), the forte etched and gilt against a blued ground on one side with a martial trophy, crossed banners and crowned 'GR III' cypher, and on the other with a trophy of arms, crossed banners and pre-1801 royal arms and mottoes, all above a gilt panel on each side etched with a rocaille and foliage against a wrigglework ground, and with the bladesmith's details 'Joh. Fried. Harnage In 1822London Silver Hallmarks For 1822, Maker's Mark Of George ThurkleWith tapering blade etched and gilt against a blued ground over most of its length on each side (some loss of finish and small areas of pitting), one side decorated with symmetrical foliage involving dolphins, maritime trophies, an angel holding a Union Jack in splendour, and a female figure with a fouled anchor, and on the other side with foliage, trophies and figures en suite centred on a panel brightly etched against a whorled ground 'JP To GH' in gothic letters above '1822', cast and chased hilt comprising downbent shell-ground with crowned fouled anchor between Union foliage, rectangular quillon-block formed as a fasces and inscribed 'I. POYYER TO G. HARNAGE 1822' on one side, claw and ball rear quillon, knuckle-guard with ribboned fruiting oak on each side, lion-head pommel, its mane forming the back-piece, ferrule of laurel leaves and with shaking hands below 'AMICUS', and chequered swelling ivory grip bound with plain and twisted silver wire, in its original wood-lined scabbard cast and chased en suite with the hilt, the openwork side panels against fine blackened fishskin, fixed suspension rings formed as mythological beasts, and retaining much of its original gilding 71 cm. blade Footnotes:George Harnage joined the navy in 1807 and served in the Leeward Islands from 1818. In 1820 he was given command of the sloop Raleigh and continued to serve in the West Indies until the close of 1821. His family had owned property there since 1680 and Mt. Poyer in the north of the island is named after them. In 1808 he published The History of Barbados and returned to England in the early 1820s. (1882-1934) was the second son of Viscount Esher. He was educated at Eton and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he received the sword of honour. Commissioned into the Coldstream Guards as a Second Lieutenant in 1902, he served as Aide-de-Camp to the Inspector General of the Forces at the Service of Thanksgiving for the conclusion of the Boer War at St. Paul's Cathedral, and was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order for performing that role. Promoted Lieutenant on 9 October 1904, he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-General Sir John French (later Field Marshal the Lord French, Earl of Ypres), General Officer Commanding-in-Chief at Aldershot, on 7 March 1905. He stayed with French for the next seven years, until the latter's eventual appointment as Chief of the Imperial General Staff in March 1912. Promoted Captain on 8 February 1911, he subsequently transferred to the 6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Royal Highlanders, and served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-General Sir John Ewart, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Scottish Command. He served throughout the Great War on the Staff in France from 19 October 1914, and was appointed temporary Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 October 1916. He was four times Mentioned in Despatches, was awarded the 4th Class of the French Legion of Honour and was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He transferred to the Territorial Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 25 February 1919, and was appointed Deputy Keeper and Librarian of the London Museum the same year. In a brass mounted black leather scabbard. 80.5cm overall *Condition: Good uncleaned condition, degradation to leather scabbard and wear to grip.

A nice example.

A P.1858 Lancaster Sword bayonet with a 62cm pointed blade with pipe back, the ridge descending to the point of the bayonet, with straight guard with slight forward facing quillon, leather grip with chequered surface, partial mark to the ricasso, with brass mounted black leather scabbard. 75cm overall *Condition: A fine example, blade in good condition, scabbard and grip with some wear, metalwork with light dents in places.

A Bavarian M.1871 Sword Bayonet with a 47cm pointed and partially fullerted blade, Bavarian Amberg factory stamp on one side and dated '82' #1882 to the back of the blade. In a brass mounted black leather Bavarian scabbard with horizontal suspension loop, the brass chape with Bavarian unit stamp 'B 3 R 6. 140' for the 3rd Bavarian Infantry Rgt 'Prinz Karl von Bayern. 64cm overall *Condition: Hilt slightly pitted, and rust to areas on handle, signs of age, otherwise a nice example.

A 1903 pattern bayonet marked Sanderson Sheffield, with a 30.5cm double edged pointed blade with various stamped marks: 1903, S42, 07 and others, with a wooden mounted grip, with further erased markings to the terminal, in a steel mounted leather scabbard. 44.5cm overall *Condition: Nice unrestored condition, leather a bit limp and slight degradation to surfaces throughout.

With a 22cm pointed, double edged blade inscribed 'Alles Fur Deutfchland' The reverse with RZM mark and M7/33 above 1940. With wooden grip mounted with an eagle with wings outstretched and swastika in its claws and SA motif. In a brown painted scabbard with nickel mounts and brown leather belt hanger. 37.5cm overall *Condition: Loss of paint and finish to scabbard, degradation to cross pieces.

Lot 119

With a 22cm double sided blade marked 'Alles Fur Deutfchland' and with RZM mark and M7/661941. The grip inset with eagle and swastika and SA mark. In brown finished scabbard with nickle mounts, with leather belt hanger, one fitting stamped M5/25 RZM. With a German cap badge and Eine Mark note. According to family tradition these three items were brought back as souvenirs after D-Day by a member of the Somerset Light Infantry *Condition: Slight cracking to painted finish to scabbard, light marks and scuffing.

Dittrichs Nach', the cross guard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle with swastika in its claws, with a black wound grip and swastika decorated pommel, in scabbard with twin ring suspension, 25cm overall *Condition: Scabbard broken above second mount, cross guard loose, light surface wear throughout.

A Dyack 'Headhunters' sword with a slightly curved pointed sharpened 52cm blade on a woven and horn mounted handle, the horn elaborately carved. With a two-part wooden scabbard with woven binding and decorative detailing, 70cm overall. With a similar knife with a 19cm sharpened pointed blade on a hardwood handle with simple carved decoration, in a matching two-part wooden sheath with cord binding, 35cm overall (2) *Condition: First with chips and slight areas of loos to horn handle and slight signs of wear throughout. Second with loose binding and some marking to blade.

A Second World War Japanese Naval Officers Dagger with a 21cm pointed blade with fuller, the gilt wire wound handle with shagreen grip and leaf decorated pommel. The gilt metal mounted leather scabbard with twin ring suspension and button release, with conforming floral decoration. 42cm overall *Condition: Scuffing to leather scabbard.

With a 35cm tapering, pointed blade with central triple fuller, etched decoration to the centre and stamped marks, The Narrow grip in unmarked silver with niello decoration and allover finely engraved foliate decoration, the scabbard similarly decorated with beaded decoration and raised foliage, 48cm overall. Apparently obtained by the vendor's Father when prospecting for oil in the Caucasus in 1912. *Condition: Slight degradation to the end of the blade, a fine presentation quality example.

A Kris type dagger with a 33cm in an oversized scabbard with elaborate scrolling cross bar and brass wrapped body, 47cm x 21cm. Another similar lacking lower part of scabbard. A Dyack type knife with a 33cm blade with pierced back, with hardwood handle and raffia bound scabbard, and another similar with 54cm curved blade, lacking scabbard (4) *Condition: First in poor condition with breaks and damage. Second in poor condition with significant loss to body. Third in reasonable condition, fourth with signs of degradation to the blade.
