British 1897 pattern infantry officer's sword with steel embossed blade, steel hilt with Royal cipher George V, faux ray skin grip and wooden scabbard covered with brown leather, blade named to 2nd Lt G Holmes, 1st Batn East Yorkshire Regt. Sword manufacture make illegible to ricasso - made by a Sheffield company. 2nd Lt G Holmes was killed in Arras offensive on 9th April 1917. During the 19th and 10th April 1917 - the 1st Btn East Yorkshire Regt had five officers killed and eight wounded. In the ranks losses were 44 killed, 149 wounded and 81 missing. Sword and scabbard mounted on wooden display wall fitting.

Lot 42

British 1897 pattern infantry officer's sword, King Edward period (1901-1910) with leather scabbard, made by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London. Sword belonged to Capt Evan John Richardson, 2nd Btn Royal Sussex Regt and 2nd Btn Yorkshire Regt. Killed 25th September 1915 aged 32. Capt Evan John Richardson was born on 9th January 1888, son of J Richardson of Bath. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieut on 8th February 1908, made Lieut on 20th January 1911 and then Captain on 14th March 1915. Killed in action at Hulloch (Loos) on 25th September 1915 having joined the 2nd Btn in France on 22nd March 1915, he was present at Testubert and Aubers. He commanded D company and was reported wounded and missing, subsequently killed in action. Sword blade etched with initialls E.J.R. and No 41665 stamped to spine of sword. Sword and scabbard mounted on wooden display wall fitting.
