A Weimar Republic period German Infantry officer's sword, plated blade 33", by Alcoso, Solingen, the back edge etched "Bruno Reminger, Potsdam", the brass hilt embossed overall with oak leaves and acorns, and with wire bound black celluloid covered grip, in its black painted scabbard. GC (celluloid grip chipped, scabbard lightly rusted). £100-120

An 1885 pattern cavalry trooper's sword, the blade by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen, bearing various inspectors' marks and "YC", in its steel scabbard with traces of regimental markings. Basically GC, the blade clean (the hilt lightly pitted, the scabbard has been pitted and filed down). £120-150
A scarce late 18th century Scottish officer's broadsword, unusual flat double edge blade 36" with shallow fullers near the back edge, the steel leather lined basket hilt pierced and engraved with entwined bands, thistles, and panel with vacant crowned circle, presumably for a regimental badge, with small plain domed pommel and sharkskin covered grip, in its steel mounted leather scabbard. The sword GC, (small hole drilled in the blade about 4" from the hilt), the scabbard mounts worn, the leather fragmentary. A similar style of hilt is illustrated in "Swords of the British Army" by Robson (fig 162). He suggests this type of sword was carried by the short lived Highland Regiments raised during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and disbanded shortly afterwards. £500-800
A good HLI Regimental officer’s dress dirk, traditional blade 11¾", gilt mounted strapwork hilt with Cairngorm set pommel. In its gilt mounted black leather covered scabbard, HLI badge on locket, complete with companion knife and fork in scabbard pockets, both with pommel mounted Cairngorms. GC (thistle massing from scabbard mount, chape not present). £150-200
A Japanese sword katana, blade 25½” (polished), the tang with checked file marks and signed with three characters, the hilt with shin gunto type mounts and with plain thin iron tsuba, in its scabbard with black and gold crazed lacquer finish and bound with an English buckskin and bullion sword knot. Basically GC £100-150
A good Omani sword Kattara, from Zanzibar, broad double edged blade 35" with three narrow fullers and inlaid with gold stylised running wolf mark, the hilt having plain iron pommel and tapered grip covered with leather interwoven with narrow silver strips and plaited silver wire, in its tooled leather covered scabbard, the silver mounts deeply embossed with scrolls and foliage, flower and crescent, and beaded borders. Generally GC (patches of rust to the blade, two areas of grip covering missing from one side, upper belt mount missing from the scabbard) £500-800
A RARE 1796 PATTERN HEAVY CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD, 88cm blade with faded blued and gilt decoration of foliage, Royal arms, GR cypher, a mounted cavalryman and owner's initials E.B., regulation steel ladder hilt with wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its steel scabbard. An old label attached is inscribed "Sword of Lieutenant Everard Bouverie R.H.A. Waterloo, Delapre Abbey". Everard Bouverie served in the Peninsular at the battles of Vittoria and Toulouse. He was wounded at Waterloo and achieved the rank of General in 1851. He was Equerry to both the Prince Consort and Queen Victoria, and Colonel of the 15th Hussars. Sold with further research and the history of Delapre Abbey.
A SCARCE LATE 18TH CENTURY HEAVY CAVALRY OR DRAGOON OFFICER'S SWORD, 91.5cm double fullered blade etched with a small foliate panel to either side of the forte and GILL'S Warranted, grey staining, characteristic brass hilt, the D-shaped knuckle guard with scroll supports, wire bound ribbed grip, the ribbing matched around the backstrap, contained in its brass scabbard with large open faced leather panel. Purchased Christie's 1979. While this sword has elements of similarity to that of the Royal Horse Guards and the 1814 pattern state sword, it is as yet unidentified.
A LATE 18TH CENTURY GEORGIAN CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABRE, 88.5cm curved fullered blade with clipped back point, steel hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard with two scrolling supports joining the two looping side bars, rounded pommel cap, finely ribbed ebony grip, contained in its steel mounted leather scabbard with incised geometric decoration.

AN 1803 PATTERN LIGHT INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD, 72.5cm sharply curved blade decorated with stands of arms, panels of foliage, flowers of the Union, crowned GR cypher, crowned Royal arms and maker's panel for OSBORNE & GUNBY, all highlighted in gilt on a bright blued ground, areas of rubbing, regulation copper gilt pierced hilt decorated with a crowned GR cypher surmounted by a strung bugle horn, lion's head pommel, contained in its engraved copper gilt mounted leather scabbard complete with knot. Purchased Elliot & Snowdon 1970.

A GOOD 1796 PATTERN LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABRE OR SWORD, 75.25cm clean curved clipped back blade etched with a scrolling fuse, laurel sprays and a swirling Greekkey design at the forte, regulation steel stirrup hilt with elongated pommel, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its steel scabbard, engraved with a maker's panel for REDDELL. This sword bears many similarities to examples included in the Sotheby's Royal House of Hannover, Schloss Marienberg auction.
A FIRST WAR PERIOD IRISH GUARDS OFFICER'S SWORD OF KIPLING AND LOOS INTEREST, 83cm blade by Wilkinson, serial no. 49354 for 1914-17, etched with scrolling foliage, regimental badge and owner's initials T.P.L., regulation pierced plated gothic hilt incorporating the regimental badge, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its field scabbard, complete with Wilkinson sword bag. Lt Thomas Pakenham-Law of the 2nd Battalion The Irish Guards was killed in action at Loos on 27th September 1915, the same day as John Kipling, also of the 2nd Battalion and the son of Rudyard Kipling. Packenham-Law was wounded in the head on the south edge of the Chalkpit Wood, close to where Kipling was killed that day.
A GVR 1831 PATTERN GENERAL OFFICER'S SWORD, 81cm curved clipped back blade by Wilkinson, etched with scrolling foliage crowned GVR cyphers, opposing oak leaf and laurel leaf wreaths, crossed swords and batons and a maker's panel, regulation gilt hilt, two-piece riveted ivory grips, later bullion knot, contained in its plated steel scabbard. Deaccessioned from the P.W.O Regimental museum. The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) had one officer become a Field Marshall, Sir Cyril Deverell who served extensively during the First World War and was promoted to that rank on 15 May 1936.
