A French Army cadet’s unique gladius style sword of the Ecole de Mars, 1794, DE shallow diamond section blade 21”, heavy cast brass hilt with panelled crossguard and langets, bearing cap of liberty, downward projecting steel arms and single upward knucklebow, “feathered” grip, plain pommel, in its brown fabric panelled brass scabbard with opposed hanging rings and large ornamental chape. GC (worn patches to scabbard fabric, large edge nick to cleaned blade). Plate 9 Note: This sword was designed by the artist Jaques Louis David for cadets of the short lived military academy, L’Ecole de Mars, founded on 1st June 1794 and then dissolved at the end of October the same year owing to the political unrest generated by its students.

A good late 19th century Sudanese sword kaskara, DE blade 35½”, with central fuller for half length and additional double fullers towards forte, the centre of the blade etched with a simple figure of a lion on one side and a butterfly on the other, flared square section crossguard with short langets, sheet silver covered grip in 4 wire banded sections, disc pommel with stud (slightly crushed), in its panelled brown leather scabbard with swollen point, 2 central bands and suspension strap. A French infantry officer’s sword, c 1850, curved fullered blade 29½”, with maker’s initials S & K (? unclear) in semi circle at forte, etched with small trophy of arms and instruments, with flourishes above and below, on both sides, and retaining a little original blueing and gilding, ornamental brass hilt, the guard with reinforced edges, knucklebow and single sidebar, into slightly forward sloping cap shaped pommel with laurel wreath border, wirebound darkwood grip (slightly AF), in its brass mounted leather (worn, seam split) scabbard with 2 rings. GC (blade reseated and with some dark pitting marks). Plate 9

A narrow single-edged blade with curved tip, engraved ram's head to one face and to the other a ram's head attacked by a lion cub; hollow-formed repoussé silver hilt with scrolled guard and curved beast-head pommel with a fish in the mouth, scales to the neck, panel with advancing beast to one face, lion pouncing on an ibex to the other; scabbard with scene of a fight between two felines to one face, feline pouncing on a fleeing ram and hare to the other face. 196 grams, 29cm (11 1/4"). Private collection, London, UK; formerly with Persepolis Gallery, Mayfair, London, UK in the 1980s. Fine condition.
