Two English Silver-Hilted Small-Swords Mid-18th CenturyThe first with tapering blade (some old surface rust) of hollow triangular section retaining traces of etched foliate scrolls on both sides of the forte, hilt (tarnished) cast with gadrooning and comprising shell-guard, quillons, knuckle-guard struck with indistinct hallmarks, pommel, and grip bound with silver ribbon and twisted silver wire; the second in similar condition, the colichemarde blade with etched decoration on both sides of the forte, the hilt (knuckle-guard replaced) cast and chased with rocailles, with its original vellum-covered scabbard (damaged, chape replaced) with silver locket and suspension mounts each chased with foliate decoration and with a ring for suspension; together with an ormolu-hilted court-sword, late 19th century, of characteristic form, with bright tapering blade etched with crowned 'VR' cypher, scrolling foliage, owner's monogram and retailer's details 'Whitaker & Campbell, Conduit Street, London', the hilt cast with graduated beadwork and engraved with foliage along one side of the grip, and outer-guard with a crown, in its black leather scabbard with foliate engraved locket and chape (old surface patination); and a constabulary hanger, the bright fullered blade etched 'E. British Post War L1A3 Bayonet and Mk 5 Scabbard, this has the early model L1A3 blade with the long fuller, and the waisted crosspiece. The hilt is marked: L1A3 9600257, which is the NATO designation for this weapon. The blade has been highly polished and the hilt and scabbard have been painted gloss black for parade use by a British infantry battalion in the 1970s. The accompanying white nylon frog was for parade use. This bayonet fitted the Self Loading Rifle.
