An ERII officer’s broadsword of theQueen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth & Camerons), claymore blade 32”, etched with crowned ERII cypher, regimental badge and motto within thristle panels, plated basket hilt with white leather backed scarlet liner, red tassels, blue ribbons, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its plated scabbard with 2 rings, and cotton carrying bag. New condition. Plate 8
A good 19th century Turkish sword yataghan, blade 25” of traditional form, with narrow fullers along the back edge, deeply struck armourer’s mark at forte, nicely silver damascened on one side with a line of 5 stylized bud scrolls, in the centre of which an Arabic inscription in a 2 line panel, and on the other side a line of 5 similar scrolls, ornamental brass reinforce into hilt at forte, set with a blue “stone” on either side, carved bone hilt with ears, of traditional form, the brass centre band set with pink “stones”, in its leather covered scabbard with large brass locket and chape decorated with faint wriggle work starfish, fish head finial to chape. A Chinese shortsword, flat SE blade 18½”, slightly upturned at point and with twin shallow back fullers, brass hilt with oval guard, lower band and pommel cap, brass tape bound sharkskin grip, in its brass mounted sharkskin scabbard, the hilt and scabbard mounts embossed overall with dragon like foliage. Steyr 1886”, crown and cypher of Luiz I, and “M1886”; walnut fullstock, the butt bearing 1886 Steyr stamp on one side and cypher of Luiz I in circle on the other side; with sling swivels and cleaning rod. A late 18th century smallsword, hollow ground triangular section blade 30¾”, etched with R Crest and “Vivat Rex” in strapwork panels, trophies and flourishes, polished steel hilt with studded oval guard, the knucklebow, ovoid pommel and swollen facetted grip covered with parallel wheel cut decoration, in its steel mounted leather scabbard (AF) with 2 rings. German Made WWI Turkish Army Officers` Sword: This sword is based on the deluxe Bavarian pattern from the same period. The sword features a 31 3/4" slightly curved blade made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company of Solingen, Germany. Each side of the blade from the ricasso to about the midpoint has panels etched floral scroll. Within the obverse panel an impressive J. NIKITTS ERBEN/ CONSTANTINOPLE" . The grip is Shagreen wrapped with brass wire. The plated scabbard has two rings for mounting. The blade has a few scattered dark spots from storage in the scabbard but is in otherwise fair condition. A quantity of military ephemera relating to The Late WJN Cheatle, Lieutenant, 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, killed in action at The Dordinelles 26th April 1915 aged 27, to include a black and white photograph in ceremonial dress and sword, Mess red tunic with brass buttons and stitched collars, braided epaulettes, tartan trousers and maroon sash, a further tunic in red with blue collars and epaulettes with five KOSB regimental brass buttons, a George V King's Own Scottish Borderer's sword with steel grooved blade, snakeskin wire bound grip in scabbard with pierced knuckleguard by John Jones & Co. of Regent Street, London, a King's Own Scottish Borderer's silkwork panel worked in colours depicting two flags with Campaign Honours and coronet with lion rampant thistles, a King's Own Scottish Borderer's shoulder belt plate, photograph album with black and white regimental photographs and two photographs of a young boy (probably a young WJ Cheatle), photographs of Gallipoli, together with newspaper obituary notice, Syrian geographical map printed by The Survey of Egypt, Under Authority from The War Office, 22nd Jan 1917, General Staff No. 2321, military and naval pamphlets, two leather and white metal mounted scabbards, flag, leather bound water canister, belt and clothing contained in tin trunk inscribed "WJ Cheatle 1st KOSB" CONDITION REPORTS All items in used and worn condition and with some losses. Photo album, maps and booklets all with some discolouration, foxing, wear and tears to edges. Textiles with dirt, fading and stains, and some deterioration to silk hangings. Some knocks and tarnish to sword and to scabbards. Please see photos for examples, and detail. The sword blade bears a crown to one side and a castle emblem to the other side (both with wear), the edges of the blade are worn, and the inscription to the castle-emblem-decorated side is therefore partly worn away so that inscription now reads "THE", "....GS OW...." "....OTTISH..." "...DERER..." "....GYPT....".
