Lot 1181

A Japanese () cavalry trooper's , or other, sword with olive painted scabbard, double obi-tori and leather finger loop; both blade and ishizuke/scabbard shoe with assembly numbers. Overall length about 96 cm.Provenance: The Property of a Gentleman. From a Private UK Collection.See pages 23-25 of Ron Gregory and Richard Fuller's 'Military Swords of Japan/1868-1945' [1986] for a discussion about the possible origin of this uncertain type. The authors point to a number of characteristics that are extant here; these include: the apparently good condition of the blade; the two suspension D-shaped rings on the scabbard; the green painted scabbard and hilt; and the lightly scratched numbers on both blade and scabbard shoe. Gregory and Fuller state that this genre should be approached cautiously, suggesting that these blades may have been manufactured for post war Chinese armed forces. This possibility is intriguing given the secret connection between the Sinologist, Lieutenant-General Okamura Yasutsugu and the Chinese Nationalist Forces of Chiang Kai-shek. According to Richard Fuller's, 'Shokan' [page 180] General Okamura had surrendered all Japanese Forces in China, northern Indo-China, and Formosa prior to clandestinely serving Chiang Kai-shek, during the years 1946-49.. Please note that some areas of wear and deterioration extant to fittings, blade and scabbard, including: areas of fatigue and scratched paint.
