An Elizabeth II 1912 pattern cavalry officer’s sword, straight polished blade 35”, by Wilkinson Sword Ltd, no 86641 (for 1964) on backstrap, etched on both sides with crowned Royal Arms, EIIR cypher and wreath within scrolled, frosted panels, and on one side with officer’s monogram “SRO”, plated bowl guard engraved with scrolls and stylized foliage, engraved stepped pommel, wire bound, shaped fish skin grip in its leather field service scabbard. Very Good Condition (surface rust to inside of guard). Plate 20

An 1822 pattern General Officer’s presentation sword, slightly curved, pipe backed blade 33¾”, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher and wreath in panels, gilt brass hilt with knucklebow and 2 sidebars incorporating crossed baton and sword in crowned wreath, sideloop, stepped pommel, ornamental backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings engraved at the top “Captn & Adjt “W J Gairdner from Coll U. Yule 1823”; together with a folder of colour illustrations and notes on Gairdiner, his career, and swords, explaining the apparent discrepancy between the VR cypher and date 1823. Very Good Condition, the hilt retaining much original gilt. See also Lot 57. A Victorian officer’s sword of the Sussex Artillery, slightly curved, fullered blade 32½”. by “W. Jones & Co, 236 Regent St, London (the firm’s address 1859-88) etched, in scroll panels, on one side with crowned VR cypher and on the other with a cannon and scrolls “Sussex” and “Artillery” above and below, regulation steel hilt with crossguard and knucklebow, sideloop and 2 sidebars, stepped pommel, plain backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition, the blade retaining some original polish (dark patina to hilt and scabbard). Plate 20

A good WWI period Highland officer’s presentation broadsword, double edged, double fullered blade 32½”, by Hawksworth Sheffield, etched on one side with crowned Royal Arms, and, on the other, crowned GVR cypher, all in stylized thistle panels, and on one side at forte “Presented to Captain V.E. Gooderson by Glasgow High School Drill Corps May, 1915”, and on the other side Gooderson’s monogram “VEG”, regimental pattern steel crossguard, wirebound fishskin grip panelled pommel cap and stud, in its leather field service scabbard. Blade Very Good Condition, scabbard scuffed. Plate 20

A Victorian officer’s mameluke hilted sword of the 10th Royal Hussars, curved fullered blade 32”, etched in scrolled, foliate panels, on one side with crowned VR cypher, “Royal/ X/ Hussars” and maker’s name “Wheeler & Robinson, 9 Prince’s St, Hanover Sqr (? unclear), London” and on the side with “X” in oval strap inscribed “The Prince of Wales’s Own Hussars” surmounted by feathers and motto, with battle honours “Peninsula” and “Waterloo” below, gilt mounted hilt, the crossguard with stud terminals and plain langets, back strap to ivory grips (tiny chip) with rosettes, in a non original silver plated scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition (hilt regilt, blade some wear and light pitting patches). Plate 20

A naval officer’s sword for Commanders and above, c 1805-25, straight fullered blade 32”, etched, on blued and gilt for half its length with crowned 1801-16 Royal Arms and supporters, fouled anchor and flourishes on one side, and on the other with crowned GR cypher, trophy and flourishes, regulation copper gilt stirrup hilt, langets bearing fouled anchor, facetted knucklebow, flattened lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound ivory grip, in its black leather scabbard with gilt brass locket (ring missing), centre band with ring, and chape, the locket engraved “G Banks Plymouth Dock” in oval. Good Condition for age, the hilt and mounts retaining approximately 20% blueing/gilding (rust pitting patches to blade, some wear to hilt and scabbard). Plate 20

An 1822 pattern infantry Field Officer’s sword, slightly curved, pipe backed blade 32¼”, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher and wreath in panels, regulation gilt brass hilt, with turn down inner portion and incorporating crowned VR cypher, stepped pommel, ornamental backstrap, wirebound, fishskin grip, in its brass scabbard with 2 rings, engraved at the top “Major General W J Gairdner, 14th & 16th Bengal N.I”; together with a folder of colour illustrations and detailed notes on General Gairdner and his swords. Good Condition, the hilt retaining little original gilt (blade cleaned, etching faint). A late Victorian officer’s sword of the Grenadier Guards, straight fullered blade 32½”, by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, no 35428 (for 1897) on backstrap, etched on one side with flat topped crown and interlaced VR cypher, wreath and 8 battle honours “Blenheim” to “Barossa” in scrolled panel, and on the other with flat topped crown and grenade, wreath with 8 scrolls “Peninsula” to “Suakin 1885” with owner’s crest of tree and coronet, plated 4 bar hilt with sideloop and incorporating grenade with VR on the ball, plain pommel, chequered backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its plated scabbard with 2 rings. Very Good Condition (apart from lower 16” of blade which has been sharpened for action). Plate 20

A scarce WWI period M1889 Bulgarian Infantry officer’s sword, pipe backed blade 33”, by F W Holler, Solingen, etched on one side with panel of scrolls and foliage and cyrillic inscription, and on the other side with a similar panel containing the stylised cypher of Ferdinand I (1908-18), the iron hilt of typical German form embossed with oak leaves, lion’s head finial to quillon, and Bulgarian lion shield on langet, the grip of wire bound black celluloid, in its steel scabbard, the hilt and scabbard retaining some original olive green finish. GC (slightly worn overall with dark patina). Plate 4

A Wm IV R Naval officer’s sword, slightly curved pipe backed blade 30”, DE at point, etched with crowned R Arms and other devices (unclear owing to heavy rust patches overall) regulation gilt hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor, turn down inner portion, lion’s head pommel, facetted backstrap wire bound white sharkskin grip, in its leather (crazed) scabbard with gilt chape, and locket with opposing rings and applied escutcheon with crown and “E & E Emmanuel, Cutlers to the King 3, Hard, Portsea & 101, High St Portsmouth.”. Blade and scabbard leather AF, hilt and mounts retain approx 80% original gilt.

Janvier 1878 = Cavrie Lre Mle 1822” on backstrap, narrow back fuller to centre section, brass hilt, the guard with reinforced edges, 2 sidebars, slightly forward sloping cap shaped pommel, ribbed leather grip (most wire removed) in its darkened steel scabbard with single ring, matching nos “3225” to hilt and scabbard. A Bowie knife, 5¾” blade marked “Bowie Knife William Rodgers England”, brass mounted rosewood hilt, blade retains most original polish, in its leather scabbard. An FS type civilian knife by William Rodgers “I cut my way” 5¾” DE blade, leather grip; another similar by William Rodgers with brass and leather grip. Generally GC (blade pitting to last)

A WWI German trench knife, SE blade 6” marked “Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen. Foche” and small crowned cypher, with ribbed dark wood grips and short steel cross piece, in its steel scabbard with leather belt loop; a WWI Prussian grey iron shako badge; a silver bullion portepee with acorn knot; and a souvenir porcelain pipe bowl with coloured scenes and inscription and plated metal lid. GC (the last item repaired)

A Bhotan shortsword, flat SE blade 15½”, slightly flattened octagonal section darkwood grip, with central ridge, in its open sided wooden scabbard with 2 copper retaining bands and leather belt loop (broken). GC (dark rust patina to open side of blade, small piece missing from top of scabbard).

A 19th century Chinese double sword, very shallow triangular section blades, 26”, lightly etched on the outer face, one with a stylized dragon and stars, the other with 2 columns of characters and stars, darkwood crossguards (one mostly missing, the other AF), swollen darkwood grips with brass lower band and ornamental pommel, in darkwood scabbard with sheet WM locket and chape pierced with stylized floral patterns. Basically GC for age.
