A GEORGIAN SHORT SWORD TO THE GRENADIER GUARDS, 60.5cm flattened diamond section gladius style blade, decorated with crowned Royal Arms at the forte, the motto NEC ASPERA TERRENT to either side, multiple small stands of arms and foliate sprays and large flaming grenades, the whole highlighted in gilt on traces of a faded blue ground, the gilt hilt of gladius form with upturned spatulate crossguard finely decorated with a stand of arms and geometric borders, bold lion's head pommel, copper wire bound grip. The attribution to the Grenadier Guards is based on the motto and the presence of the flaming grenades. The maker's name presumably would have appeared on the upper mount of the scabbard, but as this is lacking one would guess this piece is by Samuel Brunn as stylistically it bears many similarities to Lot 133 sold in these rooms on the 12th December 2017.
A MALABAR SACRAFICIAL AXE, 33cm heavy crescent blade chiselled with a geometric design along the back edge and with brass reinforcing panels to the tip and forte, characteristic brass mounted wooden hilt, together with a Bolo with 26cm leaf-shaped blade, brass mounted wooden hilt, carved wooden scabbard and two Malayan daggers with wooden scabbards. A GEORGIAN OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SWORD OF THE DURHAM MILITIA BY BRUNN, 77cm sharply curved blade, finely frost etched over virtually its entire length with classical figures, classical imagery, stands of arms, crowned GR cypher, crowned Royal arms and an ornate maker's panel for Samuel Brunn, the whole with linear borders and geometric and strapwork highlights and retaining traces of original blued and gilt highlights, presentation panel detailing PRESENTED BY THE NONCOMMISIONED OFFICERS DRUMMERS AND PRIVATES OF THE DURHAM REGIMENT OF MILITIA TO MAJOR BYERS AS MARK OF RESPECT THEY ENTERTAIN FOR HIM, classically styled copper gilt hilt with lion's head pommel, chequered ivory grip, contained in its ornately engraved copper gilt scabbard, decorated with mythical beasts amidst scrolling foliage, a stand of arms, starbursts, a further depiction of the presentation inscription and all within a stylised Greek key border.

Scabbard leather with crease and split, chape replaced.

A GEORGIAN NAVAL OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD, 72.5cm flattened diamond section blade etched with scrolling foliage and stands of arms, patinated, copper gilt stirrup hilt with twisted rope guard, the langets decorated with crowned fouled anchors, lion's head pommel, wire bound blackened fishskin grip, contained in its copper gilt mounted leather scabbard, the mounts decorated with stands of arms to reflect those on the blade, the upper mount with maker's panel for Read of Portsmouth, remnants of sword knot. This sword was purchased at the Sotheby's Stokesay Court auction in September of 1994 as lot 1240. Various swords sold alongside related to Lt. General Sir William Russell of the 7th Hussars whose mother was the daughter of Major-General James Dodington Sherwood of the East India (Bengal) Artillery who is believed to have also spent time with the East India Company Service. A VERY RARE HALLMARKED SILVER AND IVORY MOUNTED GEORGIAN NAVAL OFFICER'S DIRK BY YARDLEY, 29.75cm flattened diamond section blade decorated with traces of scrolling foliage, silver mounted hilt, the recurved cross guard bearing maker's mark for Yardley and dated 1804, square section tapering ivory grip, silver pommel cap, contained in its silver mounted ivory scabbard.
A FINE GLASGOW HALLMARKED SILVER PRESENTATION SCOTTISH DIRK OF CAMERONIAN INTEREST, 24.5cm blade with faceted back edge and stamped LECKIE, GRAHAM & CO MAKERS GLASGOW, characteristic hilt with chased silver mounts decorated with thistles, carved wooden grip decorated over all with Celtic strap work, contained in its silver mounted leather scabbard, hallmarks for Glasgow 1871, the mounts profusely chased to match with thistles, the upper mount engraved with the recipients initials RBT, the rear of the middle mount with presentation inscription PRESENTED TO PIPE MAJOR R B THORBURN THE CAMERONIANS BY THE OFFICERS OF THE 1ST 9TH GURKHA REGT CAWNPORE INDIA 1ST JULY 1908, complete with companion knife and fork decorated to match. Lieutenant Robert Thorburn of the South African Scottish was killed during the Battle of The Somme 20th July 1916.

Probably releathered and crossguard snapped. Crossguard glued in to position for purposes of illustration.
A GEORGIAN NAVAL DIRK FOR A BOY, 11.5cm flattened rounded diamond section blade etched along it's entire length with scrolling foliage, the gilt mounted ivory hilt with leaf-shaped guard with chiselled edge, the two gilt collars of turned and milled form, ring-turned marine ivory grip, contained in its gilt scabbard decorated with a starburst, foliage, a stand of arms with a Union Jack shield centered, two suspension rings.
AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY FINE QUALITY FRENCH GILT SABRE, 83.5cm curved hollow ground blade with stepped back and triple fullers, gilt stirrup hilt, the quillon with acorn terminal, coffin shaped langets cast with the face of Medusa, the chased knuckle guard with central entwined rope, bold lion's head pommel, ebonised ribbed grip with silver wire binding, contained in its gilt scabbard, the facing panel decorated with a scrolling oak tree branch. This sword retains all of its original crossgrain and polish though with some small patches of staining. The gilt finish is virtually 100% present though the foot of the scabbard bears several knocks. Three elements of grip wire lacking and the wood bears one chip and a split.
A LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN GRENADIER OFFICER'S SWORD, 77.5cm curved blade decorated with scrolling foliage, a stand of arms incorporating a shield bearing the American flag all highlighted in gilt on a blued ground, central frost etched panel to either side with a laurel and acanthus scroll and the Phrygian or Liberty cap on a spear, copper gilt hilt, the knuckle guard incorporating three graduated flaming grenades, bold eagle's head pommel, characteristic carved bone grip, contained in its copper gilt mounted black leather scabbard.
A MODEL 1811 PRUSSIAN CAVALRY TROOPER'S SWORD OR BLUCHER SABEL, 82.5cm curved blade stamped 565 on the back edge above the forte, regulation steel stirrup hilt stamped 11. R.F.B 1. 565., leather covered ribbed wooden grip, contained in its steel scabbard stamped to match but also bearing the stamps 6. r. E. 124. and 6 .L.H. 2. 108 these both struck through.
A CRIMEAN WAR PERIOD SCOTTISH OFFICER'S BASKET HILTED BROAD SWORD TO THE 79TH OR QUEEN'S OWN CAMERON HIGHLANDERS, 82cm double fullered blade by Mortimer of Edinburgh etched with scrolling foliage, crowned 79th and crowned VR cyphers, some staining and sharpened, regulation steel basket hilt composed of flattened rounded bars united by heart-pierced junction plates, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its steel mounted black leather scabbard. The 79th fought at Alma, Balaclava and Sebastopol before shipping to India to take part in the capture of Lucknow.
A GVR HIGHLAND REGIMENTS FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD, 83.5cm double fullered clean broadsword blade by GAUNT & SON, etched with scrolling thistles and crowned GVR cypher, regulation pierced and plated bowl guard decorated with scrolling foliage, some loss to plating, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its field service scabbard complete with frog and straps. Carried by the Black Watch, Highland Light Infantry, Seaforth Highlanders and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

A SCARCE AND GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY PRESENTATION SWORD, 83.5cm pristine blade by Wilkinson, serial no. 28197, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned VR cypher, maker's panel and the inscription PRESENTED TO GENTLEMAN CADET PERCY T. BOURNE ON OBTAINING HIS COMMISSION FROM THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY FOR HIS EXEMPLARY CONDUCT WHILST AT THE INSTITUTION 1887, regulation foliate pierced gilt hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its plated steel scabbard, spotting and lifting. The blade is perfect, retaining all of its original polish and its matt etched ground.
