Of British Naval Interest: a Turkish yataghan purportedly taken as a prize at the Battle of the Nile 1798, shortened spatulate blade 14 1/4in., white metal framed flaring hilt with studded bone grip scales, engraved to the inner surface of one ‘ear’: ‘Taken on board ‘Le Franklin’ French Man of War at the Battle of the Nile’, leather scabbard with white metal repousse locket and chape. The Franklin was the flag ship of Rear Admiral Blanquet de Chayla who was second in command of the French Fleet at the battle of the Nile. Following her capture, she was taken into British service and re-named H.M.S. Canopus.
