Ultimate bird-head pommel with a stylized relief four-pointed star surrounded by C-scrolls with graduating bell flowers all in high relief down the backstrap. Deeply engraved knuckle bow with relief Rococo ornamentation, including military motifs and flags and a relief presentation panel. Detailed eagle-head quillon. The languette on the right side bears a sculptured relief patriotic eagle facing toward the right, clinching arrows, while the reverse languette is smooth. Line-decorated silver grip ferrule secures the ivory grip with a checkered panel on the right side. The curved single fuller steel blade is engraved with heavy floral sprays with an American flag and “US of A” on the left side, all designs are gilt washed and traced with blue finish. Black leather scabbard with embossed designed, silver mounts with embossed decoration, top mount with a Lady Liberty, the center with shells surrounding an eagle posed with military arms, and the bottom mount with coordinating sculptured shells and bell flowers with a snake drag. Grey overall patina with large areas of heavy brown patina with some pitting and some nicks on edge. Some of acid engraving on lower end of blade pitted. Silver hilt and mounts polished and excellent, showing very light wear and some scattered light marks. Grip retains a yellow patina and has one small chip on bottom, below pommel and one chip along backstrap on left side. Tapered straight blade with partial single fullers and blued panels with gilt washed engraved military motifs on each side, right side marked "W.H.H.&S." Nickel plated cast brass hilt and urn pommel, faceted and fluted panels, knuckle bow cast with foliage designs. Reeded bone grip. Nickel brass scabbard with acorn drag and small bronze plaque on left side marked "HORSTMANN/&/SONS/MAKERS/PHILADA" in raised letters. Excellent condition, blade retains about 95% bright blue and gilt finishes and polish. Hilt retains about 90% nickel with some wear to raised areas, grip excellent. Scabbard excellent with 30-40% nickel finish, otherwise unpolished brass retains a mellow patina. For an identical example, see pages 116-118, plate 107 of "The American Sword" by Harold L. Peterson. Slightly curved single fuller blade with blued panels adorned with engraved gilt washed designs on both sides. Marked "G Keller" on one side and "a' Solingen" on the other, near top. Brass reverse-P guard with languettes, ebony grip with relief fans and patterns carved on both sides. Brass Scabbard with two rings and frog stud. Excellent condition, blade retains about 80-85% blue and gilt finishes with some scattered areas turned to rust. Brass unpolished and dark with some darker spots of patination, scabbard with a few shallow dents, grip excellent. Faceted pommel and quillon. Wood grip covered with shark skin, wire wrap is absent, turned ferrule on each end of grip. Black leather scabbard with three gilt brass mounts, center mount is missing brass ring, top mount inscribed "Bennett/Sword Cutter/to the/Prince Wales/67 Royal Exchange". Very good condition; blade has been cleaned, mostly grey patina with scattered pitting overall and some nicks on edge. Hilt retains 70-80% gilt finish, the remainder of surface retains a dark patina with some light wear to edges. Grip shows some wear to wrap with one small loss at seam. This lot was consigned by the grandson of Harry H. Shank and includes his framed original discharge certificate from the Spanish-American War. The document states that he was a private of the Governor's Troop of the Cavalry Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, that he served two years and mustered out. There is photocopy included showing him with his regiment in front of the Harrisburg National Bank. Included is his sword, an 1860 cavalry saber, the blade stamped "U.S. / G.W.C. / 1865" on one side, and "MANSFIELD / & / LAMB / FORESTDALE, R.I." on the other. The blade is polished bright and has a large single fuller. Brass hilt with two branches and brown leather wrapped grip with roped brass wire. Complete with period brown leather hanger and steel scabbard. This sword is in excellent condition, better than most examples. The curved blade retains about 98% or better of its original polish with only a few dark speckles. Brass hilt is unpolished and shows almost no use. Leather grip is excellent with a few areas flaked off and some crazing. Scabbard excellent with no dents and retaining spotted brown patina. Overall the sword shows almost no use. Also included is a canvas wrapped Spanish-American War canteen with the original leather hanger in nearly mint condition. The front is stamped with a large "U.S. 44". The back is stamped with a large "44" and his initials at the time of issue "H.H.S.". Canvas cover has excellent markings but scattered areas of dark staining. Spout is marked "J.C. JOHNSON" and contains the original cork and chain. It is clear that these items were well-cared for. Serial Number-.;
