MITSUHARU: A SUPERB WOOD NETSUKE OF SHOKI AND ONIBy Mitsuharu, unsignedJapan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Dynamically and expressively carved in the typical manner of Mitsuharu, the demon queller dressed in a voluminous robe incised with cloud designs and with long draping sleeves, his downward-pointing sword at the ready, and holding on to the brim of his hat on which a boldly carved oni hides. Shoki's expression is typically carved - his mouth is open, his beard is flowing in the wind, the ringed eyes with horn-inlaid pupils. The back with large himotoshi between the sword's scabbard.HEIGHT 8.2 cmCondition: The feet are probably restored. Some general wear, minuscule nicks. A VERY LARGE AND SUPERB WOOD NETSUKE OF A FOREIGNER WITH DOGUnsignedJapan, c. 1800, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Barry Davies Oriental Art (1990) Netsuke Classics, no. 49.Netsuke Kenkyukai Study Journal (NKSJ) vol. 12, no. 3, p. 49.International Netsuke Society Journal (INSJ), vol. 20, no. 3, p. 22.An impressively large and superbly carved wood netsuke depicting a foreigner, most likely of Chinese descent, holding a shaggy-haired dog in both hands. He wears a large conical hat and Chinese robes, the area around the collar is, quite unusually, inlaid in dark-reddish wood. His facial expression appears to be one of distress, the mouth agape, and the eyes wide open. A curved sabre in its scabbard is slung from his waist. Large, asymmetrical himotoshi through the back.HEIGHT 14.6 cmCondition: Excellent condition, the wood slightly worn with a good patina.Provenance: European private collection. Sold at Sotheby’s London, 8 June 2000, lot 129 (hammer price 75,000 GBP), where it was acquired by Barry Davies.Literature comparison:Barry Davies supposed that this carver was active on the Ryukyu Islands. Several similar examples are known and can be attributed to this hand. One, described as a Dutchman and dog, was exhibited at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in January 1975, and is illustrated in the International Netsuke Society Journal (INSJ), vol. 3, no. 1, p. 22.

A Japanese wakizashi sword, the 14.5 inch blade extending to an earlier Meiji period (1868-1912) bronze tsuba with gilt zoomorphic designs, the fuchi with floral designs, the handle with remnants of shagreen skin, lacking scabbard. Subject to CITES regulations. Due to the shagreen content, this lot will require a re-export permit if shipped outside the mainland UK.
Waterloo Period 1796 Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Sword 34 3/4 inch, single edged hatchet point blade with large fuller. Back edge with faint maker's name. Steel disk guard with eight edge holes. Double pointed langets. Steel knuckle bow. The guard with internal diamond shape reinforcement panel. Plain steel backstrap with grip ears. Grooved wooden grip. Etched foliage panels, crowned VR cypher and crowned strung bugle with scrolls engraved "Major Baines" "49th MX. R.V.". Forte with maker "G Robinson Maker Birmingham". Steel guard with Vic crown strung bugle cartouche. Steel stepped pommel and backstrap. Shagreen covered grip with twist wire binding. Contained in its plated steel scabbard. 30 % of plating absent. East Indian Company 1828 Addiscombe College Sword of Honour. Presented to later Major John Nixon Sharp Bengal Engineers served at the battle of Maharajpoor 1843 and died in India 1856. An example of the 1822 pattern Infantry sword with a piped back blade and three quarter length etched decoration, this incorporating the crest of the East India Company and presentation script "CADET JOHN NIXON SHARP. THIS SWORD PRESENTED TO HIM AT THE PUBLIC EXAMINATION ON THE 12TH DEC 1828 BY THE HONble COURT OF DIRECTORS OF THE UNITED EAST INDIA COMPANY AS A MARK OF THE COURTS APPRECIATION OF HIS GENERAL GOOD CONDUCT WHILE IN THE COMPANY'S MILITARY SEMINARY". The forte with the cutler's details of Bond of London. The fire gilt guard with the crest of the East India Company and the shagreen grip with twist wire binding. Complete with steel scabbard. Etching to the blade clear, gilt bright. Major John Nixon Sharp was born in 1811 and attended Addiscombe College between 1827-28, he also attended the Chatham Engineers school. Commissioned to Ensign he entered the Bengal Army in December 1828, arriving in India 1830. He took part in the Gwalior campaign and was awarded the Maharajpoor Star. Promoted Major 1854, two years later on the 17th August 1856 he died of Cholera at Mian Meer. PAYMENT BY BANK TRANSFER ONLY

Also etched with the initials C.L.H.B. Cutler's details of Wilkinson to the forte and blade number 53921 (1914). The hilt of the regimental pattern and complete with brown leather field service scabbard. Overall GC. Believed possibly carried by Major C.L.Blundell-Hollins-Blundell Described by one of his men in the front line 1915, My Capt. Very good looking about 2 years my senior, a dug out and thoroughly nice fellow, terrible Tory, I believe very rich." Surviving the war he lived at Slaugham Place, Haywards Heath, Sussex, England.
