Frame with rotating bolt marked 'EM & NAGANT A LIEGE', marks and serial numbers, also matching to the barrel. Working mechanism. Wooden butt and fore-end with still visible stamps ('R' crowned and others not clearly legible). Marked, iron mounts. Complete with ramrod. Minimal external pitting. dating: Early 19th Century provenance: Piedmont, Wide, curved, single-and short false-edged blade, with fuller on most of its length, featuring the well-marked 'F.R.' mark on the right side, near the tang. Some signs of use and pitting. Hilt with three, brass loop-guards, thick langets, 'F.R.' stamp on the main loop-guard. Long, smooth, brass cap, also marked 'F.R.' Leather-covered grip without wire binding. Solid, iron scabbard with stamps '59', 'K' under star and with another not clearly legible mark. Two lugs. From the owner's research, the mark would correspond to 'Francesco Ratis', first controller at the Santa Maria Maddalena factory after the restoration. Rare. length 101,5 cm.

Brass quillon with fish-shaped quillons, with a button to release the scabbard. Twisted grip of white-coloured material (probably Bakelite). Pommel shaped as a knot. Brass scabbard with emblem in relief and two lugs. length 38,8 cm.

dating: about 1860 provenance: France, Straight, double-edged blade of lozenge section, the tang with signature (barely legible). Brass hilt, shell-guard with eagle without crown of flags, pommel with eagle, the rest of the hilt decorated with floral and geometric motifs in relief. Horn grips with coils and metal wire binding. Iron scabbard with brass mounts and rare leather belt frog. length 86.5 cm.

Lot 8

dating: Second quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Italy, Straight blade of hexagonal section, blued at the forte and engraved with small trophies and floral motifs featuring remains of gilding. A small segment with a light pitting at the base. Gilded tang. The silver hilt in the style of the typical Parma official's swords but of a higher quality manufacture, the shell-guard is pierced and worked with garlands, helmets and weapons in relief around vermeil wreath surmounted by a silver eagle. With a lion's head at the tops of the shell-guard. Guard with floral decoration and a lion's head in vermeil at the centre. Pommel worked en suite. The guard consisting of two separate elements held by a screw. Smooth, mother-of-pearl grip scales. Earlier leather scabbard, apparently without repairs (!) Silver mounts. Rare. See a very similar model in 'Storia dell'Arma Bianca Italiana' (Ed. Olimpia, 1999) that Cesare Calamandrei attributes to the Duchy of Modena (p. 405) because of the eagle. It is true that both the shape and the manufacture resemble the Parmesan dignitary swords. length 92 cm.

dating: late 18th Century provenance: Sardinian Kingdom, Wide, curved, single-and short false-edged blade, with fuller, with some pitting and signs of use, featuring clearly visible engraved elements in the first half including the crowned Savoy eagle and the motto 'VIVE LE ROY DE SARDAIGNE'. A mark at the tang. Brass hilt with stirrup guard provided with an additional loop-guard. Smooth cap. Grip with earlier leather covering (a couple of woodworm holes) and brass wire spiral. Without scabbard. length 74,8 cm.

dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Italy, Wide, strongly-curved, tipped, single-and short false-edged blade, with double fuller and a triple grooved segment at the central part. Iron hilt similar to the 1855 Savoy model, with stirrup guard, langets, long cap and anatomical, checkered, ebony grip. Fine scabbard with almost flat sides, two lugs. Could be for the hussars of the Hungarian Legion, founded by exiled foreigners, mainly Magyars, who fought as Garibaldian volunteers. Some pitting. Rare. length 88 cm.

Fine mercury-gilded bronze hilt. The shell-guard with a beautiful floral decoration in relief on a granular background. Quillon carved with a spider's web at the base. Guard decorated with floral motifs and spider webs. Pommel with floral and architectural elements provided with a button worked as a bud. Mother-of-pearl grip scales. Leather scabbard (probably a later replacement.) Earlier mounts with remains of mercury gilding, the button of the cap decorated en suite with the cap. Elegant and very well preserved considering its age. length 95 cm.

Minor signs of time. Beautiful mercury-gilt bronze hilt with well-preserved finishing. The shell-guard finely worked in relief with effigy of the Napoleonic imperial eagle protecting with its wings two shields surmounted with the crowns of France and Italy respectively; around palm leaves and oak branches. Guard with five-pointed star between laurel leaves. Pommel shaped as a plumed hemet worked in the round. Grip with four mother-of-pearl plates (one tends to come off) and small staves at corners. Inside the shell-guard the signature 'Masson Rue St. Martin n. 120 in Paris'. Well-preserved earlier leather scabbard with gilt metal mounts and engraved decorations, button worked as a palmette. Very rare and interesting. length 95 cm.

With a Mod. 1870 Vetterli bayonet (64.5 cm. long) with long spring and brown Bakelite grip scales. If the bayonet is fixed, the secure wedge screw does not snap. Indicated as an unidentified sabre by gunners based on the French 1829 model: 'il numerale che compare al centro della crociera è pontificio' (the number in the centre of the crossbar is pontifical). length 93 cm.

Gilded brass hilt. Shell-guard finely decorated with Bourbon fleur-de-lis at the center encircled by the collar of St. Janarius, surmounted by under crown and on anchor, framed by oak leaves and on a finely granulated background. The loop-guard finely carved depicting a coiled halliard, the pommel featuring an antique-style helmet. Grip with four mother-of-pearl plates and gilded-brass staves. Leather scabbard with engraved, gilded-brass mounts. The gilding on the rear part of the cap partly faded due to use. Very rare. length 103.5 cm.

The first side with beautiful gilded engravings on a blue background with trophies and floral motifs. Brass hilt keeping all its gilding. The upper side of the sword-shell beautifully worked in relief with cornucopias and rods of Asclepius, the lower part engraved with fine floral motifs on the border. Guard with floral motifs in relief. Pommel with palmettes and floral motifs. Grip bearing the crowned royal monogram 'FII' of Ferdinand II, with Bourbon three-lily shield on the back. Linen-covered wooden scabbard painted in white (damaged parts, signs of use and time) with gilt and engraved brass mounts, the cap signed 'Labruna 1841 Napoli'. See a similar sword in Calamandrei 'Storia dell'Arma Bianca Italiana' (Ed. Olimpia 1999), p. 482 (at the center, with photo). Such a beautiful work with engravings even under the sword-shell suggests that it could be a sword for the king's private doctors. length 91 cm.

dating: Second half of the 19th Century provenance: Italy, Interesting blade from the pre-unification period (circa 1848), straight, single-and short false-edged blade, with fuller in the central segment, bearing in the first half floral engravings and the mottoes 'VIVA L'ITALIA' and 'VIVA L'UNIONE', at the base mark 'LOLLINI IN BOLOGNA'. Some small areas with pitting. Hilt for a 'Bersagliere' officer, made of brass, late 19th century, cap shaped as a lion's head and anatomical ebony grip. Iron scabbard with slight pitting and a bump; two lugs. length 98 cm.

dating: circa 1900 provenance: Kingdom of Italy, Slightly curved, single-and-false-edged blade, with central fuller and tang. One side of the forte provided with a coat of arms shaped as an eagle holding a bit with a dragon inside, then with a gold inscription on a blue background: 'Per la giustizia e la verità colpisci senz'odio' ('In the name of justice and truth, strike without hate'), and 'Ku-ngan-hsien notte 2.3 XI 1900' on the other side. Brass hilt richly engraved in high relief with uncrowned anchor inside an oval, pommel shaped as a lion's head and with twisted back valve. Fish-skin grip with metal wire binding. Complete with sword knot. Leather scabbard with gilt and engraved brass mounts, chape with anchor. Two suspension rings. length 90.5 cm.
