Lot 118

Scarce WW1 German Mauser ersatz bayonet. All steel construction, with push button release catch on the pommel. Single edged steel blade with fuller to both sides. The cross guard has the distinctive open muzzle ring, which allowed to be used on captured French Lebel or Russian Mosin-Nagant rifles. Complete with steel scabbard and leather frog, the latter dated 1931. The bayonet appears to be undated, but there is a faint inspection stamp to the spine of the blade. Approximately 47cm length including scabbard and frog. Condition: generally good. Patination to the metal throughout, commensurate with age and service wear. Some very light surface corrosion to the scabbard in places. Leather frog is good condition.

Lot 18

A late 19th / early 20th century Malayan Bade Bade knife. Hardwood ebonised handle, with single edged long and narrow steel blade. Complete with a carved tiger wood sheath. Approximately 26.5cm length in scabbard - blade length 17.5cm. Condition: some wear and tea to the wooden handle and scabbard. Fracture to the handle that run almost its entire length. Split along the length of the wooden scabbard, but it is still solid. The steel blade has darkened and still has a keen edge. The scabbard would appear its chape missing.

Lot 41

A 19th century Afghan tribal Khyber Knife. A well made piece of traditional form, with a wide blade tapering to a sharo point, and a T-back spine for strength. Part engraved blade and short single fuller to both sides. Steel backpiece with small metal knop to pommel, plus ridged wooden slab grips. Complete with original leather scabbard with profusely decorated brass chape. Approximately 83cm when in scabbard. Blade length 59.5cm. Condition: generally very good. Blade has some darkening and mottling to both side, plus a slight loss to the cutting edge - the blade still remains extremely sharp. The handle is good, as is the scabbard, which has minor denting to the brass chape and slight loss of leather near the throat.

Lot 93

A 19th century Victorian British Navy midshipman’s dirk. Brass cross guard with integral release catch, fouled anchor langet, and acorn tipped quillons. Lion’s head pommel, with its mane forming the backpiece. Wire binding to the grip, which would of originally had a fish skin covering, but this would appear to have perished. Brass ring through the lions mouth, onto which is fitted a bullion dress knot. Steel single edged blade, with etched decoration, including Queen Victoria’s VR cypher and crown, plus a fouled anchor. Complete with leather scabbard, with engraved brass throat and chape. 2 suspension rings attached to the brass throat. Approximately 60cm length in scabbard, blade length 45cm. Condition: generally solid, with service wear. The fish skin grips have perished, leaving only traces to the wooden base, which has been painted to mimic the original colour. Some parts of the wire binding are also missing from the handle. Some minor dents to the brass throat and chape on the scabbard. The bullion knot has darkened with age and is mostly intact. A few darkened patches and surface corrosion to the blade.

Lot 11

A 19th century kris, likely Malaysian in origin. Carved hardwood handle with gilt brass mount. Steel blade house in a repousee silver mounted scabbard. Approximately 43cm length when in scabbard. Condition: handle at fault. The handle has a large chip to the extremity, likely to have happened some time ago judging by the colour. There is also a crack running along half the length. The gilt brass mount also has a couple of petals missing from the  The blade has darkened and there is some pitting. The silver mounted scabbard has some light denting and a small split to the seam at the edge.

Lot 57

A scarce Japanese M1889 Type 32 NCO’s sword Otsu. Steel guard with chequered backpiece and chequered wooden grip. Slot to hilt near the pommel to allow the fitting of a sword knot. Blade release catch fitted to the handle. Steel, slightly curved single edged blade with flat spine and single fuller - the tip of the blade being of katana style. Serial number stamped to the ricasso, which matches the number stamped to the chape of the scabbard. Scabbard of steel construction, with single single suspension ring. Possible makers marks to the guard, but these are lost within the patina of the metal and are unreadable. Approximately 92cm total length - blade length 77cm. Notes: this particular example is shorter ‘Otsu’ sword issued to NCO’s, the officers version (Ko) is approximately 6cm longer to the blade. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Overall dark patina to the guard, likely original black painted finish. Wooden intact, but with slight scuffing. Blade is good, with minor mottling in places, plus some minor pitting marks. The scabbard has overall darkened patina, and some denting to the lower section.

Lot 15

A late 19th / early 20th century German made sheath knife. Antler handle with silver plated mounts. Steel single edged blade, marked ‘Solingen’. Polished leather sheath with silver plate throat mount. Approximately 21cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally good. Some wear to the plated mounts, handle is good, blade darkened in places. Some wear to the sheath at the end (this possibly had a metal chape at some point).

Lot 49

A Japanese Wakizashi short sword. Leather Tsuka hilt binding over a ray skin handle, with silvered Menuki ornament to both sides. Iron Tsuba with cast decoration and possible signature. Brass Sepoa and copper Habaki. Fuchs with silvered copper decoration that matches the Kashira (end cap). Steel single edged blade, contained in a lacquered ‘Saya’ scabbard. Recess to the scabbard for holding a Kozuka (now absent). Approximately 57cm total length. Blade length 40.6cm. Condition: generally very good. Bindings to handle are intact, and Menuki are well attached in place. Silvered bird ornamentation to Fuch and Kashira have worn to the high points to reveal the copper base metal. Iron Tsuba has some play to it, and has a darkened finish and patina commensurate with age. The blade is clean, with minor surface mottling, small nick to the cutting edge near the tip. Lacquered Saya has some losses to the finish and a couple of knocks, but is otherwise sturdy and complete. Please note: We have not been able to remove handle to reveal the tang.

Lot 20

A 19th century Chinese Shuang jian paired swords or ‘butterfly knives’. Two short swords fitting back to back within one scabbard. Both have wrythen carved wooden grips, brass half pommels and guards, the latter with bamboo moulded outline. Steel single edged blade with very slight curve to each. Complete with shagreen scabbard with brass mounts to the throat, body and chape area. Approximately 72cm length when in scabbard - blade length 50cm. Condition: generally good, with some service wear. Some barely noticeable hairline fractures to both wooden grips, with both having good even patination. Both brass guards have some ‘wobble’ to them, plus the pommel on one of the swords - these are still securely attached. Both blades are good, with minor mottling to the surface along their length. The shagreen scabbard is good, as are the brass mounts. The mid section of brass mount has some movement (it slides up and down), but is still securely fixed. There has been some age related shrinkage to the scabbards, which mean that both swords are difficult to push all the way in.

Lot 110

An early type SS honour dagger by Gottlieb Hammesfahr, with scarce leather vertical dagger hanger by Assmann & Sohne. Early anodised scabbard with nickel fitting. Double edged blade, with motto etched to one side, and the makers mark to the other side. One piece wooden handle, with inset national eagle and SS motif. Dark brown leather belt hanger with nickel fitting, marked A for Assmann and DRGM. Approximately 37cm length. Condition: generally very good. The blade is clean and bright, with just the usual track marks from the scabbard. Both the motto and makers mark are clear and well defined. The wooden grip is damage free and shows only minor contact marks. The scabbard shows light wear to the anodised surface and just a very minor dent to one side. There is a split to the nickel ball chape. The leather hanger shows only normal service wear and is free from splits and other damage.

Lot 38

An 18th century continental rapier sword, with brass clamshell guard, knuckle bow and pommel. Copper twisted wire binding to the handle. Narrow double edged blade, with short but deep fuller to both sides. Marked identically to both sides of the blade, with a cluster of punched star marks, an anchor type motif and the name ‘Antoni Ruiz’. The U in Ruiz is actually a backward letter N. The scabbard is absent. Approximately 97.5cm length. Condition: very good. The brass guard is intact and has a good age related patina, with remnants of old polish in the recesses of the design. Copper wire binding to the handle is intact. Blade is good, with some darkening and mottling to the surface.

Lot 22

A 19th century Italian M1870 1st pattern Vetterli bayonet, with associated scabbard and leather frog. Wooden slab grips, with steel pommel, cross guard and quillon. Single edged blade with fuller to both sides, marked ‘RS’ and ‘Terni’ at the ricasso. The cross guard is marked KU9648, and ‘CN’ to the other side. Leather scabbard with steel throat and chape, plus leather frog. The frog is marked ‘BAG’ and is indistinctly marked 1915. Approximately 53.5cm length including frog. Blade length 33.8cm. Condition: generally very good. Good all round patination to the steel parts. Press stud fitting to the pommel works as it should. Good patination to the leather scabbard and frog. Split to the leather where the frog stud passes through the hole.

Lot 43

An American P1914 bayonet, with makers mark for Remington and 1917 date at the ricasso. Wooden slab grips with usual double grooves to each side. Blued pommel, cross guard and ricasso area. Single edged blade with fuller to both sides. Black leather scabbards with steel throat and chape, the throat stamped RE. Approximately 57.5cm when in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Much of the blueing still present to the hilt. Service wear to the scabbard, with crease to the leather part. Wooden grips intact, blade good with light track marks to the surface from the scabbard.

WW2 era German army officer’s dress dagger, with original hanging straps. Orange celluloid grip with oak leaf patterned nickel plated pommel. Usual cross guard depicting the national eagle and swastika, with scroll ends. Pebbled nickel plated scabbard with 2 suspension rings. Double edged blade marked ‘WKC Solingen’ at the ricasso. Silver braided straps with olive green velvet backing. Overall length 40cm, blade length 25cm. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Hairline crack to the celluloid grip coming down from the pommel. Some minor wear to the nickel plating in places. The scabbard is dented to both sides near the chape. Straps in good condition.

Lot 78

A WW2 era Japanese 1897 pattern type 30 bayonet and frog. Steel cross guard with pre-1943 J shaped quillon, wooden slab grips, and steel pommel with release catch to attaching to a rifle. Single edge blade with fuller and flat spine. Complete with metal scabbard and leather frog. Notes: the blade is marked with the 3 petal flower mark for either the Tokyo Army Arsenal mark 1898-1923, or the Kokura Army Arsenal 1924-1945. Approximately 52.8cm length in the scabbard, blade length 39.4cm. Condition: generally solid, with service wear. Some knocks / indentations to the wooden grips. Some darkening to the steel parts. Scabbard is good, with some very minor denting. Frog is complete, with good age related patina.

Lot 82

A selection of 19th century French Chassepot bayonets. 4 examples, including pieces dated 1871, 1867, 1872, and 1870. Each with the usual ribbed brass grip, and pommel with spring loaded rifle clip. Steel cross guard with curled quillon, and a curved single edged yatagan blade with single fuller. Each bayonet is complete with its correct metal scabbard, but these appear to have mismatched issue numbers. Each piece is approximately 71.5cm. Condition: generally solid, but varies across pieces. Each bayonet blade is good, with a couple having some darkening to the steel, and some mottling to the metal. The push button rifle attachment clips are stiff with age, and one has seized. The brass handles are generally good, with normal service wear and small knocks. A couple of the examples have pitting to the cross guards, with the steel having a dark patina. The scabbards are complete, but have some dents in places. One of the bayonets doesn’t quite fit into the scabbard all the way.

Lot 14

A Hitler Youth style scout knife, with associated scabbard. The knife closely matches the earlier Hitler Youth knife seen up until the end of WW2, the one difference being the HJ diamond set into the grip being replaced with the traditional scout motif of the fleur-de-lis. Nickel plated pommel and cross guard and chequered plastic grips. Steel blade marked C.JUL.HERBBERTZ SOLINGEN at the ricasso. Black painted magnetic steel scabbard leather belt loop and retaining strap. Notes: it’s possible that the knife is made up from parts dating from the WW2 era, and the manufacturer of the item was known to have produced HJ knives. The non lipped scabbard is consistent with pre-1945 style scabbards. Overstocks of knives often had their HJ diamond badges popped out and replaced by scout badges. Approximately 25.2cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Wear to the nickel surface in the usual area on the pommel (under the leather retaining strap). Some wear / dulling to the nickel plating in other areas. Scabbard is very good condition, with matt paint finish (possibly factory repainted). Blade, grips and leather strap are good and show only light wear.

Lot 119

German WW1 K98 bayonet with scabbard and frog. Wooden slab grips, with steel flash guard, pommel and cross guard, the latter with push button release catch. Steel blade with single edge and fuller to each side. Maker marked for Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen Foche. Issue stamp W16 to spine of blade, indicating an issue date of 1916. Approximately 41.5cm length including scabbard and frog. Condition: generally good. Service wear and darkening to steel elements. Some light knocks to the wooden grips. Blade is good, as is the scabbard and frog.

Lot 17

A Burmese Dha-hmyaung and associated scabbard. Ebonised wood and white metal handle, with silver inlaid single edged steel blade. Polished wooden sheath with wire binding and rope attachment. Approximately 34.5cm length in scabbard - blade length 21.8cm. Condition: some age related wear and tear. Surface fracture to ebonised handle, which also extends down into the white metal mount. The steel blade shows some dark spotting in places and evidence of sharpening. The scabbard appear to have at least one wire binding missing, and the wood is a lighter colour where it once was. The rope mount is frayed and worn in places.

Lot 30

A WW1 era 1897 pattern infantry officer sword, with scabbard. Pierced foliate decorated steel guard, with cypher of George V. Shagreen grip with wire binding, chequered backpiece and knopped pommel. Single fuller to each side of blade, along with faintly etched decoration. Proof mark to blade at the ricasso. Complete with black painted scabbard, with nickel throat and two suspension rings. The flat spine of the blade is numbered 0669 or 6990 depending the orientation. Approximately 99cm, blade length 82cm. Condition: generally good and solid, with age related and service wear. Steel guard with darkened finish and mottled patina. Shagreen grip is complete, but part of the wire binding is missing. Blade is solid, but has an all over mottled patina, plus the etched decoration is now faint in places. Scabbard is good, with paint losses in places.

Lot 73

A WW2 era German army officer’s sword. Cast cross guard with German eagle set into the langet. D shaped knuckle guard with oak leaf detail, lions head pommel, and backpiece decorated with scrolls and flowers. Black celluloid grip with twisted wire bindings. Narrow single edged, slightly curved steel blade with single fuller. There is a makers mark under the langet, but it’s difficult to read - the word ‘Solingen’ is readable, but the maker isn’t. Approximately 94.5cm length. Condition: solid condition, but service wear. The gilt finish to the hilt has worn to the high points in several places, revealing the white metal beneath. There appears to be a very slight kink to the knuckle guard where it meets the pommel. Celluloid grip intact, but a small piece of the wire binding is protruding. Blade is good, but has darkened to the steel. Scabbard absent.

Lot 1

A WW2 era US M3 fighting / trench knife. 17cm carbon steel blade and cross guard, with partial original parkerised finish, singled edge with partial short secondary edge. Usual angled cross guard to act as a thumb rest, marked USM3 Imperial. Grooved leather handle with flattened metal pommel, the latter marked with a flaming grenade issue mark. 29.5cm total length. Condition: very good. Keen edge to the blade, still retaining much of the finish. Good colour and patina to the leather handle, with normal light service wear. The knife is minus its scabbard.

Lot 21

A 19th century, post 1850 Police Constabulary or Prison Wardens sword, with associated scabbard. Standard pattern of the era, with brass pommel, D shaped knuckle guard, cross guard and quillon. Steel single edged curved blade, with button release catch at the ricasso. Patent leather scabbard with brass mount at throat and chape. Frog stud attached to the throat area. Approximately 74.5cm length in scabbard. Condition: some service wear. The ridged wooden grip is missing its shagreen covering, and there is some tiny remnants left in places. The wooden grip also has a chip to the edge near the pommel area. The chape on the scabbard seems to be missing its end cap, and has been crimped to close it. The release catch is missing its brass button, but the blade is still able to be drawn. The blade shows age related mottling to the surface, and a couple of nicks to the cutting edge. There is some wear to the patent leather finish on the scabbard, but is otherwise good.

Lot 113

WW2 era German police bayonet, with associated scabbard. Standard antler grips and eagle headed pommel, Oak leaf patterned cross guard and quillon. Nickel plated blade with fuller to both sides, marked ACS for Alexander Coppel of Solingen. Leather scabbard nickel chape and frog stud. Both the handle and scabbard are stamped with a number 4, indicating that both have always been together. Notes: the antler grip should have a police badge affixed to it, and there is a hole to the grip indicating that it was once there. With the correct part there is no reason why it couldn’t be restored. Approximately 46.5cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally ok, some service wear. Aside from the missing badge, the grips and handle are in good condition. Some wear to the nickel plating around the frog stud, plus the staple fixing it to the leather is absent. Leather on scabbard is good, with only normal wear. Chape with several dents and knocks. Blade is clean and bright, with just normal track lines from scabbard.

Lot 60

A WW1 era 1897 pattern infantry officers sword, with scabbard, by Fenton Brothers of Sheffield. Nickel plated pierced guard, George V cypher and crown. Fish skin grip with twisted wire binding, plus chequered backpiece. Steel single edged blade with single fuller, etched decoration to both sides with George V cypher and royal coat of arms. Makers mark and proof mark to the ricasso. Complete with leather covered field scabbard, plus leather sword knot to the hilt. Approximately 100cm length in scabbard - blade length 82.5cm. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Nickel plating to the guard has worn little to the inside, minor wear to the outside edge. Service wear to the fish skin handle. Blade is good but the steel has darkened a little with age - etched decoration is clear. Leather scabbard has minor service wear, plus a small retaining strap missing near the throat. Some of the leather covering to the sword has completely worn away.

Lot 37

A Prussian 1889 pattern troopers sword, by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co Solingen. Steel hilt with Prussian eagle motif, and ribbed composite grip. Pipe backed single edged steel blade, with makers mark at ricasso. Steel scabbard with single suspension ring. Approximately 98.5cm length in scabbard. Condition: fair. The blade is good, but the hilt and scabbard are both heavily pitted. The composite grip has some degradation in places, but is complete. Small hole to the scabbard near the chape, and another near the throat.

Lot 61

U.S. Civil War era M1860/M1862 cavalry troopers sword by MFG Co of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Brass 3 bar guard and pommel, with stamped serial number 14506. Leather bound grip with twisted copper wire binding. Single edged curved blade with flat spine and single fuller. Makers marks and 1862 date to the ricasso. Complete with polished steel scabbard with two suspension rings. Approximately 106cm - blade length 86cm. Condition: very good. Clean condition all round, very small amount of movement to the wire binding on the grip.

Lot 35

An 1897 pattern infantry officers sword by Fenton Brothers Ltd, Sheffield. Pierced nickel plated steel guard, with crown and cypher of George V. Shagreen grip with wire binding, chequered backpiece and knopped pommel. Leather washer at ricasso, steel blade with deep fuller to both sides. Etched George V cypher, crown and royal coat of arms to both sides of blade. Proof mark and makers mark near the ricasso. Complete with leather covered field scabbard. Approximately 103cm in scabbard. Condition: sword is very good, but the scabbard is at fault. Nickel plating to guard is mostly intact and show minimal service wear. The blade is clean and bright with very clear etching. The scabbard is split to the wood, and there is leather missing to the last third portion of the scabbard.

Lot 59

M1889 Prussian infantry officers sword. Brass fold down guard, with Imperial Eagle set with WRII on its chest. Highly decorated pommel, with oakleaves, another eagle and swords. Fish skin grip with twisted wire binding, and another brass WRII monogram set into the grip. Straight steel blade with double fuller, no apparent issue or makers marks. Complete with painted metal scabbard, with 2 suspension rings. Notes: the richly decorated hilt and pommel would indicate this as being a privately purchased piece, likely for a more senior officer. The end cap of the pommel is engraved with its original owners monogram, which reads as 'AH' or 'HA'. The scabbard would appear to have been repainted in the past, and is now gunmetal blue/grey colour. Approximately 100cm in scabbard - blade length 83.5cm. Condition: generally good. Guard and grip is good, and shows only minor service wear, plus the fold down guard works as it should. The blade has darkened in places, and there is minor mottling. The scabbard is complete, but appears to be repainted, plus there are dents to both sides.

Lot 89

3 19th century French sword bayonets. To include, a M1886 Lebel, with hooked quillon and cruciform blade (no scabbard). A Gras bayonet, with wooden grips and brass pommel, dated 1876 to the flat spine (no scabbard). And a Chassepot bayonet, with ribbed brass handle and hooked quillon, complete with steel scabbard. Dated 1874 to the flat spine of the Chassepot. Condition: service wear to each, and the darkening of the steel parts.

Lot 109

WW2 German Luftwaffe officers dress dagger, with hanging straps and portapee. Orange celluloid grip with twisted wire binding, nickel plated pommel with oak leaf and swastika detail. Usual cross guard with Luftwaffe eagle and swastika. Pebbled scabbard, with oak leaf patterned chape and bands. Double edged blade with no visible makers mark. Silver braided straps with brown velvet backing, plus silver braided portapee. Notes: the scabbard is engraved with the word or name ‘Regula’. Overall length 42cm, blade length 25cm. Condition: generally very good. There is a small amount of the celluloid grip missing near the pommel, but the wire binding is fully intact. The scabbard is good, with light wear to the pebbled finish, and some age related darkening to the metal in places. The blade is clean and bright, and free of any damage. Both the straps and portapee show light service wear to the fabric and threads, but are generally very good.

Lot 19

A 1798 pattern Napoleonic War era Scottish infantry officer’s basket hilt broadsword. Double edged tapering blade with fuller to both sides. Cast brass basket hilt with bun shaped pommel, and a grooved fish skin grip. No discernible makers mark, Notes: pattern used from 1798 - 1828. Approximately 98cm length. Condition: generally good and solid. The hilt retains a good shape, with good patination to the metal. There is a fracture to one of the brass bars, but this is likely from service wear and there is no movement in the metal. There are some knocks to the surface of the brass near the quillon. The fish skin grip is good and complete. Much of the blade has darkened to a gun metal grey, with some further mottling to the surface in places. There is some pitting to the blade near the ricasso on both sides. The scabbard is absent.

Lot 117

M84/98 German Mauser bayonet, with scabbard and leather frog. Matched number 5097 to both the blade and scabbard. Post 1937 bakelite grips with ridged detail (dated 38 to the spine). Steel pommel with push button release catch, steel backpiece, cross guard and blade. Single fuller to both sides of blade and single edged. Manufacturers name of Rich.A.Herder stamped to ricasso, plus waffen amps marks in various places. Polished steel scabbard with correct leather frog, the latter having a belt loop and securing strap. Approximately 41cm including the scabbard and frog. Condition: generally very good. Some darkening to the steel parts, but blade is clean and retains some blueing. A little bit of surface rust to the screws in the handle. Scabbard has a couple of small shallow dents, frog is good condition.

Lot 83

A selection of 19th century French bayonets. 4 examples, including 3 Le Gras pieces, and 1 Chassepot example. The Le Gras bayonets are of standard forms, with wooden slab grips, and polished brass pommels. Steel cross guards and quillons, and straight blades with flat spines. 2 of the the 3 Le Gras examples have scabbards. Issue dates range from 1876 to 1879. The Chassepot example is of standard form, with a ribbed brass grip, steel cross guard with quillon, yatagan blade, and metal scabbard. The Chassepot is dated 1872. Condition: service wear to each, but generally solid condition. The 3 Le Gras pieces have age related darkened steel, and nicely patinated wooden handles. 2 have their original scabbards, and these have a few small dents to each, plus some pitting to the surface. One of the blades doesn’t quite fit all the way into the scabbard. The Chassepot example has a finely pitted cross guard, and the blade has a few tiny nicks to the cutting edge. The scabbard has a mottled patina to the surface and some scuffing in places.

Lot 56

A 19th century 1822 pattern infantry officers sword, by H.Hill of 3 Old Bond Street, London. Brass Gothic guard, with VR cypher and crown. Usual fold down hinged guard to the hilt. Sharkskin grip with twisted wire binding, brass backpiece with moulded acanthus leaf decoration, and a stepped pommel. Single edged curved blade, flat spine, and fuller and false edge near the tip. Proof mark and makers mark to the ricasso. The blade is etched with Queen Victoria’s cypher to both sides, along with foliage decoration. Complete with steel scabbard with two suspension rings. Notes: Henry Hill was a tailor and military outfitter, operating at the Old Bond Street address from 1837 - 1865, after which he went into semi retirement, residing in Brighton until his death in 1882. Approximately 99cm total length, blade length 81.5cm. Condition: generally very good. Brass hilt is good, with working folding guard. Grips and wire binding intact, but slight looseness to some of the wire. The blade is clean and bright, but the etched decoration is worn, with a lot of the detail having been polished away. There are a few nicks to the cutting edge of the blade, with most being tiny and one being more significant. The scabbard is complete, but there is dent to both sides near the chape.

Lot 28

An 1821 pattern light cavalry officers sword by Pulford & Co, London. Shagreen grip with wire binding, chequered pommel and 3 bar steel guard. Single edged slightly curved blade with flat spine, short section near tip becoming double edged. Leather washer at the ricasso, plus proof mark and and makers mark. Profusely etched decoration, and the VR monogram and crown to both sides. One side also has a family crest and what appears to be initials GMC. Complete with original leather sword knot, and black painted scabbard with two suspension rings. Approximately 101cm in scabbard - blade length 81cm. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Shagreen grips intact, but loss of wire binding to part of the grip. The steel parts of the guard have darkened over time, and there is some mottling and darker patches here and there. The blade is in good order, with similar areas of mottling and darkening. The etching has rubbed in places, resulting in a loss of detail. Scabbard shows a small dent to one side, and normal areas of paint loss. Leather sword knot has some surface cracking in places, but remains supple.

Lot 84

A French 1842 pattern Yatagan sword bayonet. Ribbed brass grip with beak shaped pommel. Push button release catch for attaching to a rifle. Steel cross guard with curled quillon. Single edged Yatagan blade with flat spine and single fuller. Dated 1865 to the flattened spine. Complete with darkened steel scabbed. Approximately 71cm in scabbard, blade length 57.5cm. Condition: generally solid. Clean and bright blade, but cross guard is pitted to the surface. Button release catch has lost its spring. The metal scabbard is complete, but has a pitted surface.

A WW2 era German fireman’s dress dagger, with associated scabbard, Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. Nickel plated pommel, chequered black Bakelite grips secured by 2 rivets. S shaped nickel plated cross guard. Nickel plated single edged blade with fuller to both sides, leather washer at ricasso. Black painted scabbard with frog stud. Approximately 40cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally good. Small amount of plate loss and mottling to pommel and cross guard. Scabbard showing some paint loss from service wear. Blade is clean and bright, and just has normal track lines from scabbard.

Lot 69

A scarce Japanese M1889 Type 32 NCO’s sword Otsu. Steel guard with chequered backpiece and chequered wooden grip. Slot to hilt near the pommel to allow the fitting of a sword knot. Blade release catch fitted to the handle. Steel, slightly curved single edged blade with flat spine and single fuller - the tip of the blade being of katana style. Serial number stamped to the ricasso, but no apparent number marked to the scabbard. Scabbard of steel construction, with single single suspension ring. Possible makers marks to the guard, but these are lost within the patina of the metal and are unreadable. Approximately 93cm total length in scabbard - blade length 76.8cm. Notes: this particular example is shorter ‘Otsu’ sword issued to NCO’s, the officers version (Ko) is approximately 6cm longer to the blade. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Overall dark patina to the guard, likely original black painted finish. Wooden grip intact, but with good patina. Blade is good, with minor mottling in places, plus some minor pitting marks. The scabbard has overall darkened patina, and some denting to the lower section.

A WW1 era 1897 pattern infantry officer's sword, of piquet weight. Nickel plated pierced guard, with George V cypher and crown. Slot to guard near pommel for attaching sword knot. Fish skin grip with twisted copper wire binding, plus chequered backpiece. Straight blade with single fuller, seemingly unsharpened. Etched decoration of George V cypher, royal coat of arms, and foliage patterns. Proof mark and makers mark for Hawkes & Co to the ricasso. 8683 stamped to the flat spine of the blade. Complete with nickel plated scabbard with 2 suspension rings. Approximately 100cm length in scabbard. 2.1cm width of blade at ricasso, plus the guard is 9.4cm wide, which is smaller than the standard field service guard. Condition: solid but wear to plated surfaces. Guard and grip is intact, but shows some service wear, with some pitting and mottling to the surface. The blade is clean and bright, with good etched details. The nickel plating to the scabbard shows much wear and plate lift.

Lot 90

A British 1907 pattern bayonet, with scabbard and frog. Faintly date marked 3. 18 at the ricasso. GR and crown marked, along with various inspection stamps and bend test marks. The bayonet appears to have the later P1914/17 grooved grips fitted, but is clearly the 1907 pattern as it has the shorter cross guard. Complete with a deep olive green leather scabbard, with this being date marked 1918, and having a H.E mark. The leather frog is the WW2 Home Guard issue, and is stamped D. Mason & Son Ltd 1940. Approximately 57.7cm in the scabbard, blade length 43.5cm. Condition: good, with normal service wear. Good overall patina to the leather, and darkening to the steel parts.

Lot 47

Imperial Russian 1865 pattern infantry / artillery officers sword. Black leather handle with brass twist wire binding. Brass cross guard with rounded quillon, D shaped nickel guard, and angled pommel. Steel single edged curved blade, with fuller to both sides and flat spine. Several stamped marks at the ricasso, including a Russian Cyrillic makers mark. Leather covered wooden scabbard, with brass mounts and single suspension ring. Approximately 91cm when scabbard, blade length 74.2cm. Condition: generally good, with some service wear. Leather handle is intact, but has an old split to the leather surface. Wire biding intact, with ingrained old polish. Guard and pommel good, with knocks and contact marks from service use. Blade is good, with minor mottled appearance, and some minor pitting near the blade tip. Scabbard is mostly complete, but shows service wear. Some loss to the leather and wooden carcass where it meets the brass chape Some shrinkage to the leather means that the blade is a tight fit if pushed all the way in.

Lot 66

A circa 1740 pattern British infantry hanger, marked Hadley for Thomas Hadley. Brass heart shaped guard with reinforced edges, plain knuckle guard and baluster pommel. Wooden grip, now missing its original wire binding, but there are indentation to the wood as evidence of this. Steel single edged blade with flat spine and single fuller. Leather scabbard with brass throat and frog stud, plus brass chape. Notes: slightly indistinctly marked ‘Hadley’ to the spine, for Thomas Hadley, who was operating from 1781-1810. The blade also has a Tower inspection mark of a crown over a number 2. Approximately 89cm in scabbard. Blade length 71.5cm. Condition: generally solid. Guard and pommel with normal service wear and patination. Original wire binding missing from the wooden handle. Blade has discolouration / mottling in places, plus some areas of pitting. The leather scabbard is dry and cracked, plus the stitching has all but disappeared to the seam, but is nevertheless complete. Brass throat and chape are complete and have normal service wear.

Lot 50

A continental naval sword, with etched blade. Wooden blade with finger grips. Brass guard with rounded quillon, backpiece and pommel. Steel blade with fuller to both sides, and etched decoration of a crowned eagle, a crowned coat of arms, and scroll work. No discernible makers marks or dates. Complete with brass mounted leather scabbard with 2 suspension rings. Approximately 90cm when in scabbard, blade length 72cm. Condition: fair. Fracture to the brass guard, plus dents. Wooden grips intact, pommel has knocks and contact marks. Blade has age related darkening, and some of the etched decoration is a little rubbed. Leather scabbard is intact, but with stitching faults. The brass mounts to the scabbard have dents and wear.

Metal Oil cleaning bottle from a rifle stock with a James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield table knife from the 1901 Glasgow Exhibition and a small reproduction of the Coronation Spoon (see last picture for spoon)

Lot 100

A very rare mid 19th century Royal Engineer’s drivers sword. Open single bar steel guard, with curled quillon, backpiece and pommel. Leather contoured grip, which likely would have had wire binding when first made. Curved single edged blade, with flat spine and single fuller. Complete with steel scabbard, with 2 suspension rings. The blade carries both German / Prussian issue marks for 1850, plus British inspection marks, indicating it was inspected in Liege. The manufacturers mark is for Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen. There is also a sold out of service mark of 2 back to back broad arrows to the blade. Notes: this pattern of sword was originally trialed by the Prussian Guard Hussar Regiment in the mid 19th century, before being subsequently rejected. The stocks were purchased by the British Government while in Liege. This pattern of sword is likely one of the rarest to be found today. Approximately 105cm in scabbard, blade length 87cm. Condition: generally solid, with service wear. All over darkened / mottled appearance to the metal. Missing wire binding to the grip, plus some degradation to the leather. Pitting and darkening to the scabbard. There would have been a leather finger tab within the guard, but this has long perished, leaving behind just the nut.

Lot 67

A 19th century Burmese Sword (Dha). Fish skin grip with nickel pommel and white metal / silver guard. Steel slightly curved single edge blade, 2 very short fullers to both sides, plus some simple chased decoration from the ricasso upwards. Polished wooden scabbard with 4 strips of rope bindings. Approximately 92cm in scabbard, blade length 65cm. Condition: some service wear, notably to the scabbard, which has split to the throat end. Blade is good, with minor dark spotting in places.

Lot 112

A WW2 era German dress bayonet with associated scabbard. Nickel plated pommel and cross guard, with red felt insert to the morticed slot. Black chequered Bakelite grips with two retaining rivets. Blade marked AC with scales logo for Alex Copel, with single edge and fuller to both sides. Black painted metal scabbard with frog stud. Approximately 40.2cm in length when in the scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Almost all the nickel plating remains to the cross guard and pommel, with working press stud button. Intact grips, and a bright clean blade. Some wear to the black painted finish, but nothing that detracts whatsoever.

Etched blade with George V cypher, crown and royal coat of arms. Leather covered scabbard for field service, with nickel throat. Approximately 103.5cm in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Some light service wear to the nickel plating and scabbard, plus a little darkening to the blade in places.

Lot 13

An unusual jade handled dagger, with associated scabbard. Nephrite jade handle with nickel mount and cross guard. Steel single edged piped back blade. The scabbard would appear to be a fabric covering a base material and then waxed or lacquered over the surface. The scabbard also has a nickel chape and suspension ring mount, plus silver bullion stitching to the seam. No apparent makers marks or dates. Notes: acquired by the vendor before 1960. The piece was originally purchased as Chinese, and was later verified by the Antiques Roadshow Asian arts expert, David Battie while at Trentham Gardens in 2016. Likely late 19th / early 20th century. Approximately 38.3cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. The handle is good, with natural striations to the stone. Tiny spot of surface corrosion to the nickel cross guard. The blade is good with some surface mottling to the steel, and some very minor pitting.
