Fine, ivory grip (a small missing part restored with a bone insert), richly carved with floral motifs and depicting a Pegasus and a dragon (symbols of Sumenep) at the borders and a crowned canopy at the center. Scabbard with wooden wrangka and white, metallic gandar decorated with floral motifs and birds.This item, together with the others from this collection, were collected by an European businessman during his journey through India, the Dutch Indies and Batavia (Java) and the Far East between 1920 and 1921. All these items had always belonged to his family and now, for the first time after a century, they are presented to the public and and sold by auction. This kris (together with lot N° 392) was bought by an European businessman either in Surabaya or Madura from a creditor, who declared that both daggers were from the property of the Madoera Sultan, almost fifteen years before. After buying it, the businessman asked for an estimate (either in Madura or Surabaya) and discovered that the Mendak is made of iron and the case is not made of silver. It was also confirmed that this kris belonged to the sultan. Both the kris and its estimate are well-described in a letter the man wrote to his family in 1920's to tell them about his journey. A copy of the letter (in Italian) can be seen on request. dimensions: length 43,8 cm.
