Crimea 'Great Redan' Distinguished Conduct Medal, Gallantry group of three and surrendered sword to the 97th Foot, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Crimea, bar Sebastopol, Turkish Crimea, SERJT W. NEWMAN 97TH REGT, WILLIAM NEWMAN SERJT 97TH FOOT on Crimea, Turkish Crimea un-named as issued, all with original ribbons and 85cm sword surrendered to Newman by Russian Captain of Artillery and inscribed in ink on the scabbard, WAS SURRED'ED TO SERGT WM NEWMAN OF THE 97TH REG OF FOOT (…unclear…) OFFICER IN THE REDAN BEFORE SBASTOPOL ON THE 8TH OF SEPTR. (1855) Newman was also recommended for the French Military Medal with the citation, 'Was one of the first to enter the Redan on 8 September last, and took the Russian captain of artillery prisoner, when, taking him to the rear, he was so severely wounded that his life was for a long time despaired of.' Sergeant Newman is recorded as severely injured in a London Gazette despatch, medals VF+, the sword scabbard inscription rubbed and some rust to the blade.
