A British Pattern 1854 Grenadier Guards Officers sword by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall London Serial No. 11308 steel guard, blade etched with honours to Grenadier Guards at Waterloo, Peninsular, Barrosa, Corunna, Lincelles. 82cm blade Circa 1861Provenance:- From the estate of an Officer in the Grenadier Guards, this collection was formed over a period of 30 years’ service,. A Borneo head hunters sword, 19th / early 20th century, horn handle with animal hair finish to end, holding a steel blade with hammered decoration, the segmented wooden scabbard finished with fish scale and scroll paint work augmented with patches of animal hair, strung from the scabbard are twenty seven teeth, missing smaller dagger, 23½in. (59.7cm.) long.* It is reputed that the number of teeth on a head hunters sword represents the number of heads collected with the weapon.
Two Indonesian Kris "Keris" daggersprobably late 19th / early 20th century, with carved wooden hilts, straight blades with distinctive patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron and nickelous iron (pamor), one with a wooden brass wrapped scabbard, the other with a wooden embossed metal wrapped scabbard decorated with scrolling foliage and geometric design, total length of largest 19¾in. (50.3cm.). (2)
A Persian jambiyaprobably early 20th century, waisted wooden grip with white metal mount and curved blade, the scabbard in silver with repeating geometric design, a dark green interwoven suspension cord and tassels passes through two metal rings at the side of scabbard, thus allowing owner to wear the weapon, overall length 15¼in. (38.9cm.).
A Persian jambiyaprobably late 19th / early 20th century, waisted wooden grip with silver chased mount and curved blade, the scabbard in brass and silver, chased with intricate geometric motifs and culminating with a dome shaped tip, two brass rings attached to scabbard for use with suspension cord, overall length 17½in. (44.5cm.).
An early 20th century Civil Service court sword, the 31in. steel blade with etched George V crown cypher and foliage, by H. Poole & Co., Savile Row, London, the brass hilt with crown terminal and beaded borders, with original brass mounted leather scabbard and accompanying book (see below). (2) * Provenance: Formerly the property of William Stephen Holley (1920-2005), Private Secretary to H. E. The Governor of Borneo, Sir Ralph Hone in the early 1950s and later appointed Head of the Civil Service in 1964. Author of 'A White Headhunter in Borneo', pub. 2004.
A First World War 1907 Hooked Quillon Pattern bayonet & scabbard, the bayonet features riveted wooden grips and locking lug, metal guard with hooked quillon and muzzle ring, in leather scabbard with metal furnishings, 22½in. (57.2cm.) long.* It is rare to see these Hooked Quillon varieties, given nearly all that were produced before 1914 had the hooks removed for First World War service.
A German Forestry Service dress cutlass, by P.O. & C, the 15¼” blade finely etched with stag, boar and hunting scenes, the brass hilt of Assistant Forester’s type but with Senior Forester’s type ivory grips secured by 3 plain oval brass discs on each side, in its brass mounted black leather scabbard with provision for hunting knife (now missing), the chape and locket each numbered “30”. A Geo V 1897 pattern infantry officer’s family sword, very slightly curved, fullered blade 32½”, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher in scrolled panels, regulation plated pierced hilt incorporating crowned GVR, plain pommel and chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, with leather knot (worn) in its leather FS scabbard. Basically GC (etching rather faint, some rust patches mostly to inside of hilt).
An interesting mid 19th century sidearm, plated straight SE blade 24½”, DE at point, etched “William Hatley Bacon” in scroll and foliate panel on one side, brass stirrup hilt with pronounced quillon (bent), langets, plain pommel and backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its leather scabbard with brass chape and locket with frog stud. Basically GC (some pitting to blade edges and wear to plating)
A 19th century Italian cavalry trooper’s sword, slightly curved, fullered blade 34”, sheet steel half basket guard with turn over inner edge and large tear shaped cut out slot, cap shaped pommel, wirebound leather grip (replaced), in its steel scabbard with single ring. Basically GC (some wear, old black paint to hilt and scabbard)
An Indian made 1853 type cavalry trooper’s sword, slightly curved, fullered blade 32½”, marked Rodwell & Co at forte, lightly made hilt with knucklebow, sideloop and 2 sidebars, with NS/BDA in wavy oval mark, plain ovoid pommel, composition grips, in leather scabbard with plain sheet iron locket with frog loop, and chape. GC (minor wear)
An 1845 pattern infantry field officer’s sword, almost straight, fullered blade 32”, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher in scrolled fenestrated panels, regulation brass hilt, the guard incorporating crowned VR cypher, stepped pommel, ornamental backstrap with chequered thumbpiece, wirebound fishskin grip (small split at top) with leather liner and dress knot (both worn), in its brass scabbard with 2 rings. Basically GC, the hilt retaining traces of gilt (blade some wear and pitting patches).
An interesting Brighton WWI infantry officer’s sword, with 1914-18 War and Victory Medals and related local ephemera, the sword, blade 32” by Moseley, Sheffield, etched on one side with crown and GVR cypher in scrolled panels and on the other with scrolled trellis panels, regulation pierced hilt incorporating crowned GVR, plain pommel and chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its leather FS scabbard; the medals (2. Lieut. E.E. Lloyd) in original packets, card boxes and envelope addressed to Lloyd in Queens Park Terrace, Brighton, together with 4 testimonials 1919 to 1947 relating to his career as a teacher in local schools, amusing autograph book of Lois Moore, also of Queen’s Park including entry by Lloyd, and newspaper cutting of their wedding, etc. Generally GC (some wear and surface pitting to sword). sword Plate 7
A mountain artillery sword, broad, curved fullered blade 30”, with various stamps at forte including date 5 ‘15, steel hilt with knucklebow, sideloop and 2 sidebars, pommel with stud, thumbpiece to backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its stout brown leather scabbard with brass locket and chape. GC Plate 7
A WWI 1897 pattern officer’s sword of The Royal Engineers, straight fullered blade 32½”, by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London, no 48534, etched with crowned Royal Arms and motto and owner’s name “Alexander Henry Johnston-Lavis, II Lt. Jan 9th 1915” on one side and on the other with winged lightning, “Royal Engineers” and monogram, all within scrolled foliate panels, pierced plated hilt (some plating wear) incorporating crowned GVR cypher, plain pommel, chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its brown leather field service scabbard with frog and straps. Near VGC, the blade retaining most original polish (minor pitting towards point). Note: Photostat copy from London Gazette shows “Capt. Alexander Henry Johnston-Lavis (110634) late RE” to be 2nd Lt RASC 9th Dec 1939. Plate 7
An 18th century tulwar hilted Indian sword, very slightly curved broad blade 33”, with narrow back fuller and double edged at point, traces of studded device on one side near forte, solid iron hilt with long langets, stud finials to crossguard, knucklebow with bird’s head finial, flat disc pommel with radial lines to top, rounded pommel with point, in a later dark blue velvet covered scabbard. Basically GC for age (worm overall).
A good US cavalry trooper’s sword, of French style, possibly Civil War period, curved fullered blade 35½”, with traces of maker’s name at forte, narrow back fuller to centre section, brass hilt with oval guard, knucklebow and 2 sidebars, cap shaped pommel, ribbed leather grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings, no “49” to top side of knucklebow. Near VGC
A Japanese Wakazashi short sword, 17ins blade in old polish and displaying an active hamon, the iron tsuba depicting the "three friends of winter" (bamboo, pine and plum), the hilt fittings bear guilt peonies, the hilt bound in brown silk over ray skin, complete with kozuka (small utility knife) with black lacquered saya (scabbard), 25ins overall unsigned (Edo period - 19th Century)
