Inverness - a rare Scottish provincial mounted Highland dirk Robert Anderson, marked RA, camel, INS (to pommel cap), the intricate carved wooden handle with basket weave decoration and simple studded detail, the shoulders with applied banding of foliate engraved silver, the pommel cap with scalloped mount and engraved `John MacDonald` in script, with simple bun finial, the single fullered blade marked GR with crown above and JEFFRIES below, the leather scabbard with simple mounts with scalloped edges and incised detail, the bi knife and fork set side by side in one mount, the bi knife an fork with similarly intricately carved handles and simple pommel caps blade 34cm long, overall length 47cm Notes: This dirk shows many high quality and interesting features from that of the standard dirk, particularly the finely carved handle with the added detail of the carved studs and applied shoulder mounts. The parallel mounting of the bi knife and fork is a feature that was only seen on dirks for a very short time (perhaps as short as 20 years). Perhaps the most interesting and the rarest feature are the full Inverness marks. While it must be assumed that provincial silversmiths were involved in the manufacture of dirks it is very rare to find period examples marked. Indeed only two other Inverness dirks are known from this period; one by Robert Anderson (in the collection Inverness Museum and Art Gallery), and one struck with town mark only (see J Foreman `The Scottish Dirk`). Even 50 - 60 years later marked dirks are rare and it is not until the early Victorian period that we see the practice of marking dirks becoming more commonplace (although never standard). The blade being marked for London bladesmith Jeffries is also an interesting feature and seems to suggest the blade could have been part of the earlier outfitting of Highland Regiments by King George and recycled into the manufacture of this dirk.
Ballater - a Scottish provincial silver mounted dirk William Robb, marked ROBB, BLTR, Edinburgh 1893, the finely carved black wood handle with interlaced knot work, the pommel set with engraved pin top with Celtic border, the leather covered scabbard with finely engraved Celtic knot and beast work panels, set with matching bi-knife and fork, both finely carved and with engraved mounts, the blade etched, ROBB JEWELLER BALLATER, together with original long link suspension chains overall length 49cm Notes: This pattern closely follows that commissioned by King Edward VII for the Balmoral Highlanders in 1903.
A mid 18th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket composed of panels and round section bars, the knuckle plate, side plates and shields are all pierced with hearts and holes, those on the shields framed by a double groove, the other plates having vertical grooving. The large bi-conical pommel has a small capstan shaped tang button, the wooden grip is probably a replacement. The earlier German blade has a fuller extending to around half of the blade length, bearing in one side the running wolf of Solingen/Passau partially inlaid in copper, the scabbard is of plain leather with a brass mouthpiece and chape Overall length 38 1/4" Blade 33" Notes: Overall the basket looks somewhat like those produced by the Allan family of Stirling, when a standard basket was requested. See `Walter Allan, Armourer in Stirling` by William Reid in Scottish Art Review Special Number Vol.9 No.1, 1963
A rare mid 17th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket composed of plates and bars, the bars are of lenticular section and the small shields are the early unpierced type, the shields are roughly of diamond shape and have grooved decoration of a cross within a diamond frame and have square notches cut in their longest sides, typically there are no side plates, the linking bars between the side guard and the rear guard being merely crossed by a `butterfly` plate in the plane of the blade, decorated with radiating grooves. A fairly large wrist guard survives. The bi-conical triple grooved pommel has an equatorial groove into which the arms of the hilt fit and the fore guards are very shallow. The fish skin covered grip retains it`s fringe and square leather liner, top and bottom. The earlier possibly Spanish blade bears within a short fuller the mark `Sahagom` and beyond the end of the fuller, a mark which is likely to be that of a Spanish sword smith, the leather covered wooden scabbard survives in excellent condition, even retaining it`s rare `wrap round` chape. Overall length 34 1/2" Blade 29 1/4" Notes: The second swordsmiths mark is believed to be connected with the Sahagun family who were working in Toledo in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. For details see `Armourers Marks` by D H S Gyngell P.117. To find a sword of this period in such an excellent state of preservation is extremely rare.
An early 18th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket formed of panels and round section bars, the side and knuckle guards show light vertical grooving and are pierced with hearts and holes the shields similarly pierced within a frame of light grooves, the plate borders are quite plain and undecorated. The large bi-conical pommel bears three triple grooves and has an equatorial groove into which the arms of the hilt fit, the fish skin covered grip has a spiral groove and the basket retains it`s full red liner. The massive German blade is two inches wide at the ricasso and has three short fullers, within which is a virtually obliterated mark, the point is intentionally rounded and sharpened, with leather covered wooden scabbard is in good condition but missing it`s chape Overall length 38 1/2" Blade 32 1/4" Notes: This type of blade was popular but expensive in Scotland between the 16th and 18th centuries and was marketed by German sword smiths such as the Grosse Schotten

The grip is black shagreen with a double twist of silver wire in the groove, it has steel ferrules top and bottom, the basket has a full leather liner faced with red fabric and edged with blue silk. The unmarked blade is in a good state of polish and has double fullers to within a few inches of the point. The black leather scabbard has three mounts all heavily embossed with thistles, which test as silver. Overall length 39 1/4" Blade 33 1/2" Notes: The overall appearance of the sword is similar to known examples marked `McLeod, College Street, Edinburgh`, who worked between 1813 and 1837. [`Scottish Arms Makers` by Charles E. Whitelaw P.112]. It is interesting to note that the plates display very fine engraving comparable to that found on Scottish pistols of the 18th century.
