German Third Reich. SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Officer’s sword circa 1934-36 by WKC.A fine and very rare example carried by an Officer of Hitler’ Personal Bodyguard. Heavily silver plated lion head pommel with green glass eyes, ornate backstrap, oakleaf ornamented knuckle bow and ferrule, crossguard terminating in further lion’s head; obverse langet wear integral SS Sigrunen, reverse with LAH cypher. Plated 81 cm plain slightly curved blade with single fuller, bearing WKC knight’s head logo on the ricasso, housed in its black enamel painted scabbard with single loose suspension ring. Very minor service wear VGC.Note. From 1934 until 1936 SS Officers were permitted to wear a variety of swords similar to the Army but with silvered fittings in place of gold. In 1936, the more familiar SS Degen sword was introduced and all Officers were required to wear this pattern.

Housed in original black enamel painted scabbard with nickel mounts, retaining the chains of alternate rectangular panels of mobile swastikas and NSKK winged devices terminating in oakleaf ornamented spring clip. Reverse of top link of upper chain marked ‘Mustershitz NSKK-Korpsfuhrung’, top link of lower chain stamped with RZM logo and ‘M5/8’. Blade retipped, minor service wear. VGCNSKK (National Socialist Motor Corps). These chained daggers were introduced in 1936 under the auspices of Adolf Huhnlein.

Cutler’s details to the forte. Regulation pattern plated guard and shagreen grip, this retaining twist wire binding. Housed in polished field service brown leather scabbard. Overall GC. The blade now with later engraved name “W.L. Everard Leicestershire Yeo 1914”. The sword was possibly worn by Sir William Lindsay Everard, who was commissioned into the Leicestershire Yeomanry, served in France with the Life Guards. During WW2 with the rank Air Commodore he worked with the ATA.

Victorian Royal Engineers Officer’s Sword of Major General Sir John William Gordon CBEThe sword is by Wilkinson of London, the blade is numbered 6526, which is repeated to the original brass scabbard. The slightly curved blade with etched decoration of crowned VR cypher and the regimental title. Cutler’s details to the forte. The hilt fitted with brass foliage pierced guard conforming to the 1857 pattern. Housed in original brass scabbard. Clean condition.It is interesting to note that the number of the blade indicates the date 1855, two years prior to the introduction of the hilt pattern. It is presumed that the General returned the sword to Wilkinson for conversion to the new pattern, this could explain the unusual feature of a numbered scabbard.Major General Sir John William Gordon KBE was born in 1814. He received a Commission in the Royal Engineers in 1833. He saw early service in Bermuda and at the time of the Crimea War had obtained the rank of Captain and was one of the first engineering officers to land with the invasion of the Crimea. He saw service at the Alma and Inkermann. In the trenches before Sebastopol, he came into his own, although still only a Captain was appointed Chief Engineer under the command of Field Marshal Burgoyne. Promoted Brevet Major in December 1854, he was always to be found in the front line trenches, he became popular with the troops earning the nickname “Old Fireworks”. He was wounded during a Russian sortie on the trenches in March 1855, but quickly returned to his duty. He was forced to return to England later that year due to his wounds. He was made a CB and appointed an ADC to the Queen. He would serve as Adjutant General Royal Engineers from 1856 to 1861 and with this post felt it important to upgrade his sword to the new regulation pattern. He was promoted to Major General in 1868 and a KCB. He was appointed Inspector General of Fortifications, however at this time he was in failing health partly due to his old wounds and stress, a fellow officer wrote that he feared he was close to a nervous breakdown. Gordon was man who had always put duty first, now felt he was letting his corps down and took his own life on the 8th February 1870.Attribution by vendor

The back of the blade with cutler’s details of “Mole” and to the forte the retailer’s details of the “Army & Navy Co-operative Store”. The hilt with gilt brass guard and shagreen grip. Housed in polished brass scabbard. Overall GC clean condition.Lieutenant Colonel Francis Morton Close OBE was born in 1870 and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1889. He saw service in India and at Cork with the 33rd Co. Submarine Miners. He was appointed an instructor at Woolwich and in 1909 with the rank of Major was serving with the ordnance survey at Southampton. At the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to France and joined the Staff. During the war he was MID on two occasions and was awarded the OBE in 1919.

One Officer with the initials “W.H.” has been found serving with a Submarine Miners” unit. That being Captain William Hawley of the Portsmouth Division who was commissioned 4th March 1889 and Captain 4th March 1893.

This with contemporay engraving: “MAC 11 SCOTTISH COMMANDO 9TH JUNE 1941”. The reverse with a Scottish Motto. Fitted with a single edged plain bowie style blade. Housed in original brown leather scabbard complete with belt loop and retaining strap. Overall GC untouched condition.

The 6 1/2 inch blade has been sharpened and to the obverse of the forte etched panel “Wilkinson Sword Ltd London”, the reverse “The F-S Fighting Knife”. Housed in original leather and square chape scabbard, retaining all tangs and elastic retaining strap. Very clean.
