The hilt with large steel oval crossguard, heavy brass pommel stamped with broad arrow over “13”. The wooden slab grips secured by four steel rivets. Contained in its webbing covered fibre scabbard with rear belt loop and securing strap. Scabbard with maker “ME Co 1942”. Minor rust staining to steel.

A group of three sacrificed iron weapons comprising: a spearhead with long leaf-shaped blade and tubular socket, blade end bent round parallel to the upper; a sword with flat-section two-edged blade and rounded tip, sloped shoulder and long tang, omega-shaped guard, the blade double-bent into an S-shape; a sword in its iron scabbard with scooped mouth, bent into a double-S shape and the scabbard delaminated. Cf. Stead, I., British Iron Age Swords and Scabbards, London, 2006, item 185, for type. 2.2 kg total, 26.5-47cm (10 1/2 - 18 1/2"). From an old Yorkshire, UK, collection; acquired on the UK art market before 2000. [3, No Reserve] Fair condition.

An iron sword-blade fragment, lentoid in section with slight fuller, the tip housed in a bronze chape of its scabbard; the chape tongue-shaped with openwork ornament to both faces comprising an upper bear-head motif on guilloche bands above a mesh with facing lion-mask to the centre. Cf. Paulsen, P., Schwertortbänder der Wikingerzeit, Stuttgart, 1953, item 61 (Burg Holme, Latvia); Arbman, H., Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, pl.5, for type. 146 grams, 22cm (8 3/4").
