Ca. early 19th century AD.A Yatagan sword with its hilt crafted from silver exhibits a distinctive eared shape. It is adorned with intricate repousse and engraving, showcasing the skilled artistry of Ottoman craftsmen. The riveted bone side panels add a touch of elegance and provide a comfortable grip for the wielder. Both sides of the blade contain silver inlay cartouches. These cartouches bear Arabic inscriptions, adding an element of cultural and symbolic significance to the weapon. This sword is accompanied by a metal-mounted leather scabbard. The scabbard provides a secure and aesthetically pleasing housing for the blade when not in use. Yatagan swords, renowned for their unique design and functionality, played a prominent role in the military and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire. These swords typically feature a slightly curved, single-edged blade that tapers to a point and widens towards the hilt. The elegant curve of the blade allowed for effective slashing and thrusting maneuvers, making the Yatagan sword a formidable weapon. Size: L:790mm / W:60mm ; 950g Provenance: Private collection of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1980s.
