CLAPPERTON R.M.A. TO G A SCHOMBERG R.M.A. WEST COAST OF AFRICA FEBY 13TH 1845 and with VR cipher, fused grenade, crest and motto Persevere, the reverse also etched and with sword cutler`s signature DUDLEY GRAND PARADE PORTSMOUTH, the hilt incorporating VR cipher on fused grenade, the gilt brass mounted black leather scabbard signed as the blade and an 1822 Pattern infantry officer`s sword, with single fullered 1845 Pattern Wilkinson type etched blade, signed for Selby, Portsmouth (3) Provenance: (first sword) Presented to General Sir George Augustus Schomberg, KCB (1821-1907) by John Philip Nelson Forrest Clapperton. In a distinguished and lengthy military career Sir George Schomberg served on the coast of Africa, 1844-46. Sword - in generally good condition with light pitting and rather dirty. The hilt painted with a hammerite metal bronzing paint, the folding guard original and still functioning. Scabbard - the leather powdery, all the mounts present and retaining most of the gilding but somewhat dull and scratched, especially the chape. Second sword - blade heavily pitted and rusted with a few nicks. The retaining most of the original gilding although extremely dirty, the hinged guard working retaining the remains of a sword knot, both kept for many years in an attic and entirely unrestored

Glass items with wear, losses and deterioration. Ribbons with losses, dirt, etc. The 1914-15 medal is inscribed "18298 Pte F. Tucker R. Berks : R.". The 1914-1918 medal is isncribed to rim "18298 Pte F. Tucker R. Berks. R.". The Great War for Civilisation medal is inscribed to rim "18298 Pte. F. Tucker. R. Berks. R.". Framed Certificate is also included with this Lot and has general wear and some fading. Bayonet has some wear, scuffs, varnish rusting, etc. Pocket watch case with some wear, tears and deterioration, it is not known whether or not the pocket watch is in working order.
