German Third Reich Government Official’s dagger by Carl Julius Krebs, Solingen circa 1939-42.A fine rare example with simulated mother of pearl grip and silver plated mounts. The grip fitting far better them Alcoso or Eickhorn made examples. Eagle’s head ornamented pommel, crossguard and langet bearing an eagle and swastika facing same way as pommel, the blade etched with maker’s oval crowned K logo. Housed in its finely pebbled plated scabbard, the oakleaf bands (which show slight verdigris leeching onto scabbard) retaining both loose suspension rings. Toned externally, blade bright. GCIntroduced in March 1939; production ceased in mid 1942.

A good scarce example by a scarce maker, the blade etched “Alles für Deutschland” and bearing maker’s diamond AB logo. Blade retains much cross grain finish. Brown wooden grip inlaid with silvered eagle and enamelled circular SA device. The nickel crossguard is stamped Mi (SA Group Mitte). WW1 Attributed Cavalry Officer’s 1912 Pattern Sword by Robert Mole.A good World War 1 period George V example, with regulation blade, etched with foliate decoration, Royal Arms and Cypher. Cutler’s details to the forte. Regulation pattern plated guard and shagreen grip, this retaining twist wire binding. Housed in polished field service brown leather scabbard. Overall GC. The blade now with later engraved name “W.L. Everard Leicestershire Yeo 1914”. The sword was possibly worn by Sir William Lindsay Everard, who was commissioned into the Leicestershire Yeomanry, served in France with the Life Guards. During WW2 with the rank Air Commodore he worked with the ATA.

Housed in steel scabbard. Overall now with dark patina. 8th Corps raised at Stratford on 6th March 1860 and were disbanded in 1865.

Victorian Royal Engineers Officer’s Sword of Major General Sir John William Gordon CBEThe sword is by Wilkinson of London, the blade is numbered 6526, which is repeated to the original brass scabbard. The slightly curved blade with etched decoration of crowned VR cypher and the regimental title. Cutler’s details to the forte. The hilt fitted with brass foliage pierced guard conforming to the 1857 pattern. Housed in original brass scabbard. Clean condition.It is interesting to note that the number of the blade indicates the date 1855, two years prior to the introduction of the hilt pattern. It is presumed that the General returned the sword to Wilkinson for conversion to the new pattern, this could explain the unusual feature of a numbered scabbard.Major General Sir John William Gordon KBE was born in 1814. He received a Commission in the Royal Engineers in 1833. He saw early service in Bermuda and at the time of the Crimea War had obtained the rank of Captain and was one of the first engineering officers to land with the invasion of the Crimea. He saw service at the Alma and Inkermann. In the trenches before Sebastopol, he came into his own, although still only a Captain was appointed Chief Engineer under the command of Field Marshal Burgoyne. Promoted Brevet Major in December 1854, he was always to be found in the front line trenches, he became popular with the troops earning the nickname “Old Fireworks”. He was wounded during a Russian sortie on the trenches in March 1855, but quickly returned to his duty. He was forced to return to England later that year due to his wounds. He was made a CB and appointed an ADC to the Queen. He would serve as Adjutant General Royal Engineers from 1856 to 1861 and with this post felt it important to upgrade his sword to the new regulation pattern. He was promoted to Major General in 1868 and a KCB. He was appointed Inspector General of Fortifications, however at this time he was in failing health partly due to his old wounds and stress, a fellow officer wrote that he feared he was close to a nervous breakdown. Gordon was man who had always put duty first, now felt he was letting his corps down and took his own life on the 8th February 1870.Attribution by vendor

Housed in polished brass scabbard. Overall GC clean condition.Lieutenant Colonel Francis Morton Close OBE was born in 1870 and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1889. He saw service in India and at Cork with the 33rd Co. Submarine Miners. He was appointed an instructor at Woolwich and in 1909 with the rank of Major was serving with the ordnance survey at Southampton. At the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to France and joined the Staff. During the war he was MID on two occasions and was awarded the OBE in 1919.

Housed in polished steel scabbard. Blade remains in clean condition, scabbard with surface rust.Hobson & Son operated with this address from 1887-1901. One Officer with the initials “W.H.” has been found serving with a Submarine Miners” unit. That being Captain William Hawley of the Portsmouth Division who was commissioned 4th March 1889 and Captain 4th March 1893.
