He reached Madras in 1752 and took part in the campaigns being waged between the French and English Companies for supremacy in the south. He also took part in an expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma, arriving at Ganjam in Eastern India in 1759 and from there went on to Calcutta. During this time he also transferred from being a surgeon to an ensignship in the Company’s Bengal army.When Archibald Swinton left the Company’s service at the end of 1765, he also left India with an unprecedented mastery of the Persian language, local customs and strong relationships with the Mughal nobility. Swinton was a very early collector of Indian and Mughal art and on returning to Scotland he brought with him a substantial collection Indian paintings, works of art, ivories, arms, jewels, Persian books and silver and jade handled daggers. This is documented in family papers.

N. O.' within a border, long chape of swollen form with nested borders of foliate scrolls, and edge binding embossed en suit; the locket with pendant roundel set with a turquoise cabochon to the centre and linked to a band of silver braid that encircles the scabbard, the back with pockets accommodating two smaller knives and a further vacant pocket.

A Third Reich army dagger, by Alcoso, with silver scabbard, the blade stamped Alcoso ACS Aligan, with wooden handle and leaf cast pommel handle, 40cm long. Provenance: by family repute the dagger entered the family of the owner so was previously the collection of the owners family and by repute was on board the 5/kg4 a henkel 11/p-4 which was lost outbound for an attack on RAF Leeming and strayed over Humber defences it was hit by AA fire and then flew into a balloon cable stop, it jettisoned its bomb load over rail road sidings in Immingham and crashed just beyond what is now Hawthorn Avenue, Grimsby. Two of the crew were killed to further crew members were taken prisoner, aircraft 5J plus KN was destroyed. (AF)
