A NAPOLEONIC PERIOD OFFICERS SWORD. A French blue and gilt officers sword, complete with brass scabbard. The hilt of a Lions Head pommel, with copper wire and fishskin grip. Stirrup form guard, with trophies and boat shaped langets in the guard. Curved 33" blade with half decoration of blue and gilt, with a Bastille in gilt on both sides. Very clean with short clipped-back point, in its brass scabbard. See Illustration

A partial length silver topped swaggerstick, Kings Royal Rifles by Swaine & Adeney. Hallmarks for 1918, the ebony stick has been snapped some time ago. (16.3/4").

A SILVER PRESENTATION KUKRI etc to LT COL C D ROE DSO-OBE. A silver mounted Kukri with 12.1/2" rust stained blade, with its silver mounted scabbard present. Stamped on the scabbard is, To Col C D Roe DSO OBE, presented by the NCO's 2-5 G R. Ornately decorated with 1913 coin inset in the Indian silver, also red stones. The knife scabbard is present with one knife present. A silver match case with KC above crossed Kukris, and 1V and slung bugle below. An incomplete carved cigar box, with crown above crossed Kukris, above Vth and slung bugle. The mahogany box is lacking two partial ends below the lid. 8" x 5" x 3.3/4" domed lid. Charles Douglas Roe DSO (1915 France) later OBE, was born in 1882 at Plymouth Devon. He married Daisy B M Mackenzie-Kennedy (b.1883) in India in 1904 . One of their sons was Killed on Active Service aged 24, in Ireland in June 1942. Awaiting orders to join his ship, he was in a collision with another aircraft with his body not found.

A COMMANDO DAGGER. A W W 11 issue Commando's dagger, complete with its leather sheath. The flat crossguard is marked with a 'B' and broad arrow, the double-edged blade of some 6.3/8" in length. Both knurled hilt and blade are blackened, the scabbard is complete. Believed to have been carried by Reg Williams of Bristol in WW11. The following two lots are also said to have been 'Liberated' by him.

AN OFFICERS FIVE-BALL HILT SWORD. An officers five ball hilt sword, with gilt stirrup hilt. The blade a variant of the 1796 pattern, of a curved single-edged length being some 25.3/4". Pitting to the blade is evident, lacking a scabbard.

Traces of both maker and hall marks are on the shell guards.The ornate hilt of silver with multiple wire wrapped grip, again indistinct hallmarks on the bar itself. Having a 30.1/2" Colichemarde blade, with engraved decoration including Hanniball. Of some quality when made in the late period of rapiers and a change in requirements. The makers mark could well be JS. Lacking its scabbard, though in very good order.

Complete with scabbard, belt and outer carrycase. All in very good overall condition.

A 19thC MAMELUKE SWORD & SCABBARD. Having ivory grips and steel mounts, steel and black leather mounted scabbard. The reversed quillions crossguard, with light engraving evident. Single-edged curved blade with three-quarter broad fuller, 31.1/4" length with Garden on the spine. Pierced design steel mounts to the scabbard, of decorative form. C1800. John Garden is listed as working 1793-1819 in 203 Piccadilly. London. His descendants carried on the company until 1890. See Illustration

Leather disc hilt with alloy pommel, complete with original scabbard. The tip is missing approximately 1/8", the pop stud fastener with the company name is present. 12.3/8" overall length. A smaller Marbles skinning knife with 4.3/4" blade, bearing the Marbles logo, complete with scabbard and pop stud present (Marbles). Again the tip has some loss evident. (2)

Crown above anchor and gilt plated, hilt and fittings. Gilt mounts on the scabbard, usual break due to leather shrinkage.

D H W and broad arrow, 1919 etc. Brown leather scabbard complete with frog, again with military acceptance marks. The scabbard is the correct length, though the blade is halted with an inch or so left enter.

A VICTORIAN 74th FOOT OFFICERS DIRK WITH ETCHED BLADE. A gilt mounted officers dirk of some quality, C1860 of the 74th Foot . The ornate mounts have the badge at the throat mount of the scabbard, also the Elephant and '74' inset in thistles. The mounts are all gilt again with thistle decoration, the hilt has Nemo Me Impune Lacessit on both sides. The blade of some 11.1/2" length, with a single three-quarter fuller and serrated spine. Lightly engraved with Assaye and Elephant, also multiple Battle Honours together with a Lion and persevere, etc. Etched in a scabbard mount are the initials J K W. See Illustration

A FRENCH 19thC LIGHT CAVALRY SWORD & SCABBARD. An 1822 pattern French Light Cavalry Troopers sword with 36" curved single-edged blade, having no apparent makers or issue markings. Three bar hilt with some damage to the grip covering, complete with steel scabbard. Some rust damage at the blade tip, having approximately 1/8" loss or damage to it.

A PIONEERS 19thC SIDEARM. A 19thC 1856 pattern Pioneers sawback sidearm, with brass hilt and guard lacking a scabbard. Forward swept quillion, the blade being 22.1/2" in length. Makers name stamped Wilkinson, among other markings.

AN ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS DIRK. A high quality 19thC A & Sutherland Highlanders officers dirk , with silvered mounts and etched blade. The ornate mounts to the scabbard throat and knife and fork fittings, bear the Boars Head and Sans Peur, Ne Oblivis Caris. Dark brown leather on the scabbard, with both knife and fork present, the latter lacking its spring clip. The blade of exceptional etching details, Crowns surmounting the Boars Head on one side, Sans Peur below the Wild Cat. Of some 12" length with dual fullers, being exceptionally clean with very little staining present. See Illustration

A GORDON HIGHLANDERS DIRK. A silver mounted officer of the Gordon Highlanders Dirk, by Kirkwood of 65 & 66 Thistle Street, Edinburgh. Hallmarks for Edinburgh 1892, on the scabbard mounts. A Gordon Highlanders badge at the throat mount, with Egypt and India on a cross. Ornate silver mounts to all parts, with thistles and oak leaves etc. The blade of classical form, with spearpoint and three-quarter fuller also the serrated back edge. The blade of 12" in length, with a narrow fuller below the spine, the hilt with silver studded carved grip. Three pale stones are inset in the pommel, also the knife and fork hilts. The whole of some considerable quality, a very well made example. 17.3/4" overall length. See Illustration

A S A D FORCE OFFICERS SWORD. A South African Defence Force officers sword with stainless steel blade. Three bar hilt with W K C Solingen marked 32.1/2" blade, with the South African Coat of Arms. Brown leather scabbard with frog, the overall condition is extremely good.

A GEORGIAN DIRK A Georgian Naval officers sword converted to be worn as a dirk, lacking a scabbard. The J J Runkell marked blade of Solingen, being shortened to 17.1/2" in length, still bears its gilt enhanced decoration. GR and Crown also Cannons, foiliage Royal Coat of Arms , etc remain on the now clipped back point blade. Having an ivory grip with Lions Head pommel, the quillions are swept forward and reverse sides. A well made conversion from a good quality officers sword, perhaps altered during family ownership some years ago.

A EDWARD V11 OFFICERS SWORD. A Levee pattern officers sword, complete with a brown leather field scabbard. Slim clean plated blade marked Flight Military Tailor, Winchester. Plated hilt with EdV11 cypher in the guard, rust evident to the inner section. Blade length of 32.1/2".

A GERMAN 1898 PATTERN BAYONET. 2nd type with two piece wooden grips, complete with its scabbard. The blade marked W K Co Solingen at the throat pipeback and spearpoint some 20.1/2" in length. The crossguard stamped 524 R 145, with 5 under a crown on the spine, complete with its steel scabbard.

Lot 139

A GEORGIAN NAVAL DIRK A Presentation Georgian Naval Dirk, presented to Wm Burnett Surgeon on HMS Defiance. Later Sir Wm Burnett KCB. FRS Surgeon General to the R Navy. The dirk is of some quality with gilt fittings, to both hilt and scabbard. Engraved on the scabbard throat mount is; Presented to Surgeon Wm Burnett by his fellow officers on HMS Defiance. The ivory grip has silver stylised initials attached, a lions head pommel and chain guard and reverse quillions. The very curved blade of 14" length, is heavily rust pitted with traces of decoration evident. Sir W Burnett was born in 1779 and died in 1861. Born in Montrose Scotland, he attended Montrose School. He was entered as Masters Mate in HMS Edgar, whilst still training for his MD in Edinburgh. Whilst serving with Sir John Jervis on HMS Goliath, he was present at both Cadiz and St Vincent. Present at both the Battles of The Nile & Trafalgar. He later served as Director General of Naval Hospitals and Fleets. Burnett Bay in Canada is named after him. Surgeon to William 1V, Knighted 1831 and honoured by Queen Victoria in 1850. See Illustration See Illustration

A GEORGIAN DIRK OR SIDEARM. A C1790's officers sword, shortened for wear as a dirk or sidearm. Pineapple shape pommel with crescent shaped quillions, having a wire wrapped grip. The blade of straight single-edged form, being now 14.1/8" in length with a full length fuller. The shortened sword scabbard altered to suit the altered length, has gilt and black leather mounts.

East Coast African Expedition 1873-74 & Livingstone Exploration interest- a Victorian Royal Engineers Officer's dress sword, formerly the property of Major Cecil William Esmonde Murphy, Royal Engineers:, the straight single edge blade with acid etched decoration, armorial and initials 'CWEM' retailer mark to ricasso for J B Johnstone, London & Dublin,scroll decorated one piece hilt and guard, single quillon, wire bound fish skin grip, in a polished scabbard with double suspension loop, blade length 82cm long, together with copies of family research and documentation.*Biography - Major Murphy was born in India in 1842 and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1862. He was acting as Commissary of Ordnance at Aden when he was asked to join a relief search party sponsored by the Royal Geographic Society. The society were concerned about Doctor Livingstone after losing contact since the infamous meeting with Henry Morton Stanley and a relief party was formed under the command of Lieutenant Verney Lovett Cameron. The expedition was beset by tragedy from the outset, as Robert Moffat (a nephew of Livingstone) was struck down by fever and died. The expedition's progress was hindered by the mass desertion of carriers who were scared of being caught in the middle of a war between natives and Arab slave traders. All three men leading the party were struck by illness, Cameron was struck by fever that caused weeks of blindness and Dr William Dillon was delirious and suffering from internal inflammation. Upon meeting some of Livingstone's carriers in Unyanyembe they learned of the death of Livingstone but Cameron decided to press on with the expedition and became the first man to cross Central Africa coast to coast, while Murphy believing the expedition to have finished resigned and decided to escort Livingstone's body back to Bagamoyo. *Provenance.
