A CHINESE SWORD (YAODAO), QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY with slightly curved broad single-edged blade formed with a long slender fuller on each face, brass hilt comprising lobed guard with broad brim, compressed elliptical pommel, and wooden grip covered with blackened plaited binding, in its fishskin-covered wooden scabbard (small cracks and losses) with large pierced and engraved white metal locket and chape each decorated with geometric scrolls on a scaly ground, and two further plain slender bands joined by a characteristic bar decorated with scrolls and with two loops for suspension 53.0 cm; 20 7/8 in blade Waist swords, or yaodao, were worn suspended from the belt and were widespread in the Qing military. A RARE SIAMESE (THAI) OFFICER'S SWORD AND DIRK, RATTANAKOSIN, LATE 19TH CENTURY based on the Japanese 1896 and 1873/83 patterns respectively, the sword with fullered blade, gilt-brass gothic hilt with folding side-guard, and elephant's head pommel, in its brass-mounted leather-covered wooden scabbard; the dirk en suite, in its brass-mounted fishskin-covered scabbard, both retaining their bullion cords and knots, and in very good condition throughout the sword: 61.7 cm; 24 1/4 in blade (2) Provenance Wallis & Wallis, 9th October 1996, lots 83 and 84 On 26th September 1887 the Kingdom of Siam dispatched a mission to Japan and signed the Declaration of Amity and Commerce with the Japanese Government. This took place during the reign of the two great modernisers of each country, King Chulalongkorn and Emperor Meiji. The former established the Siamese Royal Navy on 8th April 1887 and the Royal Naval Academy on 20th November 1906.

A RARE SIAMESE (THAI) NIELLO AND SILVER-GILT MOUNTED CEREMONIAL SPEAR, AYUTTHAYA, 18TH CENTURY with long tapering leaf-shaped blade of hollow-ground diamond-section, highly figured hardwood haft carved in imitation of bamboo, fitted at its base with a turned brass spiked shoe, and at the top with a long three-stage niello and silver-gilt collar of lai dok phuttan pattern chiselled at the top and bottom with broad leafy bands divided by lotus collars, and the top fitted with a large chiselled foliate washer, complete with its finely lacquered wooden scabbard decorated over its surface with gilt flowers and foliage (small chips and losses) 47. cm; 18 1/2 in head A very similar spear is preserved in the National Museum, Bangkok.
