An officer’s Crimean War period mameluke hilted sword of Brevet Major R Portal, 4th Light Dragoons, dated 1854, curved pipe backed blade 30½”, etched overall with a random marbled pattern, with central panels on either side etched “Brevet Major R Portal 1854” and “4th Light Dragoons”, foliate engraved gilt brass crossguard with langets, studs to ivory hilt (one missing on either side), panelled backstrap, in its steel scabbard with brass crosslet mounts and 2 rings, Good Condition, the blade retaining much original polish (a few minor edge nicks, small crack to hilt). Plate 19 Note: Brevet Major R Portal 4th Light Dragoons rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade, born 11th November 1820, Ensign 83rd Foot 17th April 1840, Lieutenant 8th May 1845, was ADC to Lord Paget, Captain 9th June 1846, Major 5th Lancers 19th February 1858, Lieutenant Colonel commanding 5th Lancers 12th March 1861. Died 24th December 1888. “Letters from the Crimea” Captain R Portal was published in 1900, where he stated “After going right through a regiment of Cossacks, a regiment of Lancers, and a regiment of Blue Hussars,we retired in perfect order towards our position that we had come from, of course at full gallop. To do this we had to again pass through this murderous cross fire....and I certainly, with everyone else who saw what we had to do, never thought for a moment that the few remaining of the Light Cavalry Brigade would ever reach our own position. If anything, the fire upon us going back was more severe than before..” and “It was altogether the maddest and most extraordinary order ever given to Cavalry...”

A French cavalry trooper’s sword, double fullered blade 37”, with model Carabiniers 1854 and date of manufacture 1874 on backstrap, light cavalry pattern brass hilt with 2 sidebars to knucklebow, reinforced edges to guard, cap shaped pommel, fabric covered grip, in scabbard with single ring. Basically GC (blade kinked and reseated, grip worn).
An ERII officer’s sword of the R Army Service Corps, almost straight fullered blade 33½”, by Wilkinson, no 95464 on backstrap, etched with crowned ERII cypher and wreath on both sides in scrolled Union wreath panels, plated hilt with sideloop and 2 sidebars to knucklebow, diced pommel and backstrap, wirebound grip, with leather knot, in its leather FS scabbard. VGC, and evidently seldom used. Plate 14
A good United States grenadier company infantry officer’s sword c 1810, curved fullered blade 30½”, with blued and gilt panels on each side for half its length, incorporating trophy of arms and long sprig of foliage on one side and 2 similar foliate sprigs on the other, in both cases with a central section of plain foliage, gilt hilt with 4 slotted loops to guard on each side, knucklebow comprising 3 grenades in roped borders of diminishing size, up to plain section into prominent and well modelled eagle’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, panelled bone grip (crack on inner side), in its black leather scabbard (some crazing) with gilt locket incorporating stud and suspension ring, top band with ring, and chape. Very Good Condition, the blade retaining approximately 75% original blueing and gilding, the hilt almost all gilt, and scabbard mounts approximately 80% gilt. Plate 22
An Irish infantry officer’s sword, c 1935, straight fullered blade 33”, of British style, etched on both sides with Gaelic “FF” (Fianna Fail) monogram in motto strap on a star and sunburst, all within Irish strapwork panels incorporating a harp at the base, pierced brass half basket guard incorporating star FF device as on blade, incised dome pommel and plain backstrap, wirebound (loose) fishskin grip, in its leather scabbard. An Imperial German senior officer’s service sword, plain, plated slightly curved, fullered blade 34”, with early Eickhorn (double squirrel) stamp at forte, gilt hilt with slender triple bar guard incorporating Imperial German eagle, sharply forward sloping pommel surmounted by open work crown, wirebound dark fishskin grip with applied WRII cypher on the outer side, in its black painted (worn) scabbard with single ring. Good Condition (few tiny edge nicks to blade). Plate 24
An early Victorian officer’s mameluke hilted sword of the Northumberland and Newcastle Yeomanry Cavalry, slightly curved flat blade 30”, clipped back at point, by “E Besch, 11 Hanover St, Hanover Sqre”, nicely etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher in tightly scrolled panels, and with “NNYC” monogram in small panel at forte on one side, steel facetted crossguard with long langets and baluster finials, plain backstrap to ivory grips secured by studs (2 caps missing), in its flattened diamond section scabbard with 2 rings on crosslet bands. Very Good Condition, the blade retaining virtually all its original polish. Plate 22 Note: The Northumberland and Newcastle Yeo Cav, raised in 1819, was the regiment succeeding the Percy Tenantry Cavalry; it became the Northumberland Hussars in 1876
An 1821 pattern Light Cavalry officer’s sword of The 11th (Prince Albert’s Own) Hussars, named to Cornet George Ashby Maddock, slightly curved, fullered blade 34½”, by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, etched with crowned VR cypher on one side, and on the other crown “11” in “Prince Albert’s Own” and wreath, Sphinx and Egypt, and scrolls “Salamanca”, “Peninsula”, “Waterloo” and “Bhurtpore”, all in tightly scrolled panels, with owner’s crests and initials “GAM” in ornamental panel, regulation steel hilt with crossguard and quillon sideloop, knucklebow and 2 sidebars, forward sloping chequered pommel, plain backstrap with chequered thumbpiece, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition the blade retains traces of original polish (dark patina to hilt and scabbard). Plate 21 Note: Cornet George Ashby Maddock born 1833/4, son of Rev. G A Maddock of Naseby, Cornet 22.4.53, Lieut 23/11/54, Captain 6/8/56, retired 1858, died 8/3/1890.

A Victorian 1887 Heavy Cavalry officer’s undress sword, mounted with late Victorian RA officer’s blade 34½” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall (No 30354), etched with crown, Royal Arms, traces of Royal Artillery and thunderbolt, foliage, blank panel with hand engraved initials “BV 1891”, pierced scroll guard, steel mounts, silver wire bound fishskin covered grip, in its steel scabbard. An early 18th Century officers sword by S Brunn, with brass handle and hilt with wirework grip, with original scabbard, scabbard marked John Stamforth, Pattteson, Lt Col, East Norfolk Militia 1809, the other side reading S. Brunn, sword cutler to H.R.H the Prince of Wales, 55 Charing Cross London, scabbard A/F.
A military sword with shagreen handle, a "Game Bird" shooting stick and five various walking sticks CONDITION REPORTS Length of scabbard is 85.5 cm in length. Length of blade is 82 cm in length and length of entire sword is 96 cm. Scabbard is incredibly rusty all over, the handle is rusty, shagreen is discoloured and areas of pitting. Pommel doesn't jiggle, there are no markings on the blade - see images for further details. Game Bird shooting stick has scuffs and scratches conducive with age and use and the five sticks have further scuffs and scratches, discolouration etc and general wear - see further images Packing available, minimum charge £20.40 plus whatever the postal rates are.
Sykes Fairbairn Commando Fighting Knife with ribbed brass handle and double edged steel blade, the crosspiece marked: 'Rogers of Sheffield' in leather, metal mounted scabbard. CONDITION REPORT: Generally worn edges of blade have been notably sharpened, bluing is worn, grip has surface wear, knocks and dinks, the scabbard leather work is cracked and creased. Metal mount to scabbard worn to base metal and dented. Elastic handle strap very perished.
