An Interesting Collection of Early 20th Century Items Relating to Engineer Rear Admiral Edwin Williamson R.N., including his 1827 pattern naval sword with gilt brass mounted leather scabbard and sword knot, a japanned hat tin for a tropical helmet, six full cap tallies for H.M.S.Inflexible, H.M.S.Glorious x2, and H.M.S.Capetown x3, a silver framed portrait photograph, various other photographs and two albums of photographs showing his various postings, a quantity of buttons, ribbon bars, a pair of shoulder boards, two spirit levels, a large quantity of hand written letters to his wife sent whilst serving in the Caribbean on H.M.S. Capetown from November 1923 to September 1924, his commission to Engineer Rear Admiral dated 27th December 1937, newspaper cuttings, also various school and qualification certificates and a type written note of his service record.Footnote :- Edwin Williamson attended the Royal Naval Engineering College from 1902-1906, followed by the Royal Naval College and various postings including HMS Inflexible, HMS Duncan, HMS Royalist, HMS Glorious, HMS Capetown, HMS Resolution, and various stints at the Admiralty. He became Aide-de-Camp to King George VI in December 1936, and retired in December 1937.

Loss of fishskin to grip, with some loss of the wood to just below the pommel. Rust pitting to the guard and scabbard which has a number of small dents to one side. 2 - Black patching to blade, rust pitting to hilt and scabbard. 3 & 4 - Orange rust pitting to all metal surfaces.

An Imperial Russian Model 1881 Type Shashka, the 80.5cm single edge steel blade with two narrow fullers to the back edge, one side of the blade engraved with the Russian double headed eagle, the opposing side with two cyrillic marks at the ricasso, the brass stirrup hilt with ring pierced downward scroll quillon, diagonally ribbed ebony grip and brass mounted black leather scabbard, 95cmFootnote : - The vendor's grandfather was a Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Reserve in the First World War, working with the White Russians to protect supplies falling into German or Bolshevik hands. The Royal Navy seized the Russian cruiser Askold from the Bolsheviks in Kola Bay in 1918. The cruiser was then commissioned as HMS Glory IV (nicknamed Packet of Woodbines due to its five very thin funnels). The aforementioned Lieutenant was on board the ship from 19th November 1918 until 30th April 1919, and acquired the sword at this time.

Hilt with some pitting and wear to the fishskin. Scabbard with some pitting and two small dents. 2 - Blade with rust pitting, hilt bent with some damage to the grip. Scabbard is shabby and lacking its chape.
