A SAMURAÏ SWORD, INSCRIBED WITH THE SIGNATURE SOSHU JU TSUNAHIRO JapanBlade description:- Tsukurikomi (shape): shinogi zukuri (four sides), hiro mune (with a two-side back), ubu nakago (the lame with its original length, i.e. not shortened)- Nagasa (length of the blade): 55 cm- Haba (thickness of the blade): 0.6cm- Sori (curve of the blade): 2cm- Ji hada (steel grain) de type itame-hada (resembling a wooden board).- Hamon (temper line) of hitatsura type- Boshi (resembling a wooden board): ko maru (short and round)- Meï (signature): SOSHU JU TSUNAHIRO- Period: possibly 16th centuryThis blade has a rare temper line (hamon) referred to as hitatsura. At the end of the Muromachi period, a group of black-smiths set up in Odawa, a city of the Soshu Province. This group, referred to as Odawa Soshu, is attached to the Sue-Soshu School. Youndai Soshu Masahiro was awarded the name "Tsuna" by Hojo Ujitsua, the Daimyo of Odawara. He then changed his name in "Tsunahiro".Mount description (koshirae): The blade is mounted with a black lacquered wooden scabbard (saya) set with a Kogaï and a Kozuka, both adorned en suite with Uru Ryu (rain dragons). A SAMURAI SWORD, WAKIZASHI Japan, Possibly 18th to 19th centuryBlade description:- Tsukurikomi (shape): shinogi zukuri (four sides), hiro mune (two-side back), ubu nakago (the length of the blade is original, i.e. not shortened);- Nagasa (length of the blade): 50cm - Haba (thickness of the blade): 0.7cm - Sori (curve of the blade): 1.3cm- Ji hada (steel grain): itame-hada (resembling a wooden board)- Hamon (temper line): O Choji Ha - Boshi (return of the temper line to the blade type): ko maru (small and round)- Period: possibly 18th to 19th century.Mount description (koshirae):With a dark brown lacquered wooden scabbard (saya)i, signed on the place of the Kozuka (small knife) Mitsu together with a Kakiha. The scabbard is adorned with rain dragons and with a gilt-lacquered heraldic crest (mon) depicting two chidori birds with bamboo, i.e. the one of Clan Date, Daimyo of Yoshida in the Iyo Province. The grip is covered with ray skin (same) and adorned with menuki depicting a bee and a wasp. Black cord. A SAMURAI SWORD, POSSIBLY A KOTO WAKIZASHI O SURIAGEJapan, The blade possibly before 1600Blade description:- Tsukurikomi (shape): hira zukuri (two sides), hiro mune (two-side back of the blade), kiri nakago (later shortened), almost straight, the curve starting around the habaki (kochi zori), possibly an old Tachi blade given the strong original curve near the grip typical of the blades for fights on, strong shining for an old patina.- Nagasa (length of the blade): 54 cm - Haba (thickness of the blade): 0,5 cm - Sori (curve of the blade): 0,1 cm- Ji hada (steel grain): itame-hada type (resembling a wooden board).- Hamon (temper line): gunome midare type (taking a large part of the blade) - Boshi (return of the temper line to the blade tip): midare (irrégulier) - Period: possibly before 1600.Mount description (koshirae):With a black lacquered wooden scabbard (saya) set with a steel kojiri and embellished with a silk cord (sageo) laced in the style of Ronin Musubi. Circa 200-300 AD. Bronze scabbard chape (or bottom) with pelta-shaped body surmounted by a stylised budding flower motif. Chapes serve to reinforce leather or fabric scabbards to prevent the point of a blade from cutting through. The Roman gladius was the short sword used by soldiers under the Roman Empire, which primarily allowed for stabbing attacks while fighting in closed rank formation.Size: L:58mm / W:60mm ; 30gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
Circa 700-900 AD. A long iron khazar sword with a long pointed bevelled blade, a rectangular hilt with convex sides formed in bronze with gilding, remnants of a silver handle which shows beautifully incised decoration and a large section of scabbard in the middle of the blade. This sword would have belonged to someone of high social standing due to the nature of this sword. It would have been expensive and would have acted as ceremonial as well as functional. An exceptional piece in stable condition. Size: L:830mm / W:75mm ; 760g. Provenance: From a private collection; previously was acquired from G. M. in London in 2017.

Condition- the metal fixture at the base of the scabbard is loose. Sword is in good condition with no movement to the pommel & grips wires intact. The length of the blade is 74cm and the scabbard is 75cm.

An 1803 pattern infantry officer's sword, the brass hilt with pierced guard, GR royal cypher, lion's mask pommel and knurled ivory grip, 91cm long overall, stuck in a brass mounted leather scabbard (at fault), with a 1796 pattern light cavalry sabre, the 76cm single edged curved fullered steel blade with bayonet tip, the brass stirrup hilt with langets to each side and wire bound leather grip, 87cm long overall, in associated brass mounted leather scabbard (2) (at fault) CONDITION REPORT:The 1803 pattern infantry officer's sword is firmly wedged in the scabbard and the blade therefore cannot be inspected. All elements of the hilt including the guard and pommel are loose. The highpoints of the knurled grip are worn and the grip shows some staining and ingrained dirt. The brass mounts of the scabbard show various dents and splits, and the leather is worn and cracked throughout. All brass elements of the sword and scabbard show tarnishing.The 1796 pattern light cavalry sabre shows wear to the blade which has removed almost all etched or engraved detail. The blade also shows tarnishing and pitting across the surface. The langets show some dents and distortion. The stirrup hilt reinforcing insert at the top of the knuckle bar may be a later replacement. The brass back of the grip is standing away from the grip itself. The leather of the grip shows wear throughout and the wire binding shows ingrained dirt and tarnish. The brass mounts of the scabbard show various dents and splits, and the leather is worn and cracked throughout, with the seam largely open. All brass elements of the sword and scabbard show tarnishing.
A 1796 pattern infantry sword, the 82.5cm fullered steel blade with etched decoration and bayonet tip, the gilt brass hilt with folding guard, knuckle bow with bud finial, cast wire effect grip and urn pommel, 98.5cm long overall, lacking scabbard, with a similar example lacking knuckle bow and finial, a c1790 Naval officer's sword with 74.5cm straight fullered steel blade, the brass stirrup hilt with single bar knuckle bow and horn grip mounted with a brass fouled anchor shield, 88.5cm long overall, and c1790 Naval type sword with 81cm straight fullered etched steel blade with bayonet tip, the steel stirrup hilt with single bar knuckle bow and ribbed and wired ivory grip, 92.5cm long overall, lacking scabbard (4) (at fault) CONDITION REPORT:The 1796 pattern infantry sword shows wear and tarnishing to the blade, wear to the gilt brass finish of the hilt and a build up of polish residue in various crevices. The 1796 pattern infantry sword lacking knuckle bow and finial is in a similar condition with painted losses. Its scabbard shows a detached brass mounted tip with crude attempted repair and further damage to the leather below the top mount. All the scabbard mounts show wear, dents and tarnish.The naval officer's sword with horn grip shows nicks, tarnishing and wear to the blade, with any etched or engraved decoration to the blade worn away. The hilt shows an open but apparently secure joint where the knuckle bar meets the hilt. The pommel shows a possible later capstan rivet. All brass areas show wear and tarnishing. The horn grip shows a build up of polish. The scabbard shows a crude repair to the tip.The naval officer's sword with ivory grip shows wear, tarnishing and pitting to the blade and steel hilt, and wear, staining and cracking to the ivory grip. The grip wiring is also detached in places.
