A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, the 28cm brass dial with silvered chapter ring inscribed Ashton, Ashburn (sic) Roman numerals, date aperture, 30-hour movement striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist centred by an oval shell patera, bracket feet, 207cm high, c.1800The signature is that of Samuel Ashton the younger born at Macclesfield 1828, apprenticed to father at Tideswell 1742-49, and moved to Ashbourne c. 1750, leaving his brother Aaron to succeed to their father's business at Tideswell. The two son,s Thomas and Martin, the former working from Tideswell and the latter in partnership with his father from 1791 and his successor until his own death in 1829 [Craven, M & Hughes, R G 'Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Derbyshire' (Mayfield 1998) 57-58.] Condition Report: Generally good. Dial and movement associated with case.

A pair of Chinese bronze censers and covers, 20th Century, the covers surmounted by a lion dog, the censers modelled with dragons, two handles and on a tripod base, 24cm high including covers, together with a brass gong in the form of a bell, decorated with a dragon, with a carved hardwood stand modelled with two figures, 45cm high overall (4).

A large George III satinwood, mahogany, tulipwood and harewood marquetry line inlaid pembroke table attributed to Henry Kettle The rectangular top with hinged leaves centred by a large fan medallion, on square section tapering legs, spade feet and castors, 100cm wide extended, 96cm deep, 70.5cm high The design of this pembroke and the drawing of the panels to the hinged leaves relate to a labelled Kettle pembroke at Saltram House, Devon. The use of an over-sized marquetry fan appears on a labelled Kettle serpentine chest formerly with the Pelham Galleries, both pieces are illustrated in C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1998, p.289, nos. 543 & 544. Henry Kettle, the St Paul's Churchyard cabinet maker, upholder and undertaker (c.1773-97) was originally in partnership with William Henshaw from around 1770 and whom had been established at St Pauls Churchyard since at least 1754. Kettle took over the business of the cabinetmaker Philip Bell at 23 St Pauls Churchyard and in 1796-97 Kettle entered into a short lived partnership with the cabinetmaker George Oakley.
A pair of German Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) copper and brass cantilever candlesticks by Carl Deffner Esslingen, circa 1900, in the manner of W. A. S. BensonEach with a brass sphere issuing a scrolled candlearm with inverted bell-shaped nozzle and circular drip-pan and a scrolled foot, the underside with the stamped mark CDE within a shield with two crossed halberds, 23cm long. (2) The round ball weight to prevent the candlestick being knocked over is ingeniously part of the unusual design and it was also designed to be carried in the hand and placed down safely. The Deffner firm was established in Esslingen in 1815 by Carl Christian Ulrich Deffner and existed throughout several generations of the family until 1969. Around the period before WWI the company was a very large concern employing around 500 people. Carl Deffner (1856-1948) took over the firm from his father Wilhelm in 1900, with his brother Otto (1866-1949). Esslingen am Neckar is a city in the Stuttgart Region of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. W.A.S. Benson was a significant figure in the Arts & Crafts movement and set up a workshop as W.A.S. Benson & Co in 1880 in North End Road, West Kensington, London. He was known for his fine metalwork. A related pair of “piano” candlesticks is in the British Museum (1982,0108.2-3).
A George III mahogany linen press attributed to Philip BellThe upper part with a moulded cornice above a pair of panel doors now enclosing one original slide pierced with handles above three long graduated drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 124cm wide, 60cm deep, 189cm high.The press offered here closely relates to a labelled press by Bell bearing the firm's rococo label and now in the collection at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The press is illustrated in C.Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1998, p.96, no.95. Philip Bell is recorded as working from St Paul's Churchyard between 1758-74. He succeeded his father Henry Bell who had founded the firm in 1736 and when Philip came of age he assisted his widowed mother Elizabeth with the running of the firm.
