Maurice Clarke ( British b. 1875)Three quarter length portrait of an attractive young lady with ribbon tied chestnut hair, wearing a lace trimmed white gown, seated in an open armchair. Pastel, highlighted with white. Signed and dated April 1917 lower right, 76 x 59cm. Artists label verso, identifying the sitter as Monica Bell. There was little known about her early life but Monica joined the army in her twenties commissioned in the WRAC. By the end of the war she was a Colonel and served in Cairo for five years. After the war she returned to the UK and lived in Pluckley, near Ashford in Kent

The back with a fine honey-yellow patina. The cord attachment runs through the looped handle of the bell.HEIGHT 3.4 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear and rubbing to the sumi-stained hairwork.
