Post-Medieval, a silver hammered halfgroat of James I (1603-1625) dating c. 1610-1611. Second coinage, initial mark: bell. Tower mint. Obverse: I.D.G ROSA SINE SPINA, crowned Rose. Reverse: TVEATVR VNITA DEVS, crowned Thistle. Some areas of weakness, about Good Fine. Diameter: 17mm. Weight: N2127. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
Post-Medieval, a copper-alloy 'crotal' type animal bell of probable 17th or 18th century date. Spherical in plan, the bell demonstrates an integrally cast suspension loop, prominent midrib and decorated lower hemisphere. At the base of the bell, on one side of the sound-slit, a foundry mark is visible consisting a founder's hammer set within a shield. Preserved in very good condition, a pleasing even greenish patina. Discussion: 'crotal' type bells were most popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, their use equivalent to modern cow-bells. Their prevalence as detector-finds is largely due to the importance of droving during this period.
Post-Medieval, a copper-alloy 'crotal' type animal bell of 18th century date. Spherical in plan, the bell demonstrates a prominent midrib, petalled sides and the foundry mark of 'WG' either side of the narrow slit which delineates its sound chamber. Discussion: the foundry mark on this piece denotes it as a product of William Gwynn, who worked out of his foundry at Aldbourne, Wiltshire, from c. 1770-1813.
Modern, a complete copper-alloy ‘crotal’ type animal bell dating c. 1755-1798. This example is extremely large, being spherical in plan and demonstrating an integrally cast suspension loop at its apex. Through the latter, a fragment of iron chain is still present. The upper hemisphere of the bell has four circular sound-holes, between two of which is stamped the number ‘24’ (a reference to the bell’s size). The lower half is decorated with a repeating design of rounded petals which flank a rectangular slit. Either side of this-the initials ‘R W’ are visible, representing the foundry mark. The original pea remains in the sound chamber. Preserved in exceptional condition with an even brownish green patina. Diameter: 105mm. Height: 115mm. Discussion: ‘crotal’ bells were attached to animals as a way of tracking them across the landscape, an important task given the importance of droving in the 17th and 18th centuries-when these items were at their most prevalent. The vast majority of those discovered by detectorists are small, reflecting their wearing on the collars of smaller animals such as sheep or goats. The extreme size of this piece suggests it was worn by something larger, most likely a cow or bull. The foundry mark ‘R W’ refers to that owned by Robert Wells I or II in Aldbourne, Wiltshire. Provenance: found Bampton, Oxfordshire, 2015. Recorded on the PAS as BH-334C4E.

Of note in this lot, a 12th/13th century Medieval strip ring with engraved decoration, an intact Tudor hooked tag, 18th century gilt mount in the form of a facing cherub, intact crotal bell (still rings) with foundry marks-probably 17th century, various 'coffee-pot' weights, three jettons and a well-corroded Roman tetrarchic 'nummus'. Mostly poor condition.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
