IRAQ - MESOPOTAMIA, ASHUR AND GERTRUDE BELLAlbum of 125 photographs (mostly gelatin silver prints on photo cards) relating to the German archaeological survey at Ashur, and Mesopotamia including a visit by Gertrude Bell, probably compiled by a member of the team, approximately 25 with pencil annotations written in German on the verso (a few identifying the photographer as either Walter Bachmann, or Walter Bachmann), 3 inscribed in ink probably by the compiler of the collection (see footnote); and 7 others of Venice, all loose mounted in album, images approximately 90 x 140mm., [c.1909-1911]Footnotes:Rare series of photographs taken by members of the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft, during the German archaeological survey carried out at Ashur, the ancient capital of Assyria on the Tigris River, under the leadership of Walter Andrae. Images include identifiable members of the archaeological team (including Andrae, Conrad Preusser, Paul Maresch, Walter Hinrichs, and Walter Bachmann, the last two identified as photographers of some of the images), in formal and informal groups, on site, on horseback, wading through a river and with local dignitaries. These include Gertrude Bell, shown in four images (2 half-length seated outside; 2 with German colleagues), who visited Ashur in 1909 and 1911 witnessing the 'cutting-edge excavations... [and] systems of archaeological recording... which would inform her own seminal work' (Paul Collins, Gertrude Bell and Iraq: A Life and Legacy, 2013). Other images includes views of archaeological sites, surrounding landscapes, and local inhabitants. It is probable that the collection was formed by a member of the German team (Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft), the as yet unidentified sitter in one portrait. This is inscribed 'Der asketische Forscher' [the ascetic researcher]... Assur, 20. IV 1909' with a note to his sister, Anne Paul, in Cassel. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

WOODSTOCK FILM REELS. An incredible collection of 96 well stored Kodak 16mm film reels, in labelled cans. Labels nearly always bear the name of 'Rank Film Laboratories' and many also describe 'Artco Films' or 'Crow Films'. The films have seemingly been processed circa 1979/1980 as per dates on some labels. The film reels were given to our vendor after a storage unit was demolished at the site. The reels contain footage from both the original footage (reels marked 'Santana', 'Joan Baez' 'Stills') and from the 1979 reunion. It is not known whether the footage has been seen, or used before in any of the released film versions. Prospective buyers are invited to make arrangements to view the footage prior to the sale. Also to include two rolled screens and a Bell and Howell Filmosound projector.

14th century AD. A pewter pilgrim's badge representing the consecration of the Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln, Germany, by Bishop Konrad of Constanta; pentagonal plaque with four fixing loops; Mary crowned and robed holding the infant Jesus sitting within a building with shingle roof and tower enclosing a standing bell-ringer holding two ropes; approaching figure outside with bishop's mitre and sceptre followed by a robed and winged angel holding a voided orb(?); blackletter inscription to the frame '* die * wicht * got * selb * mit * englen + dis * ist unser * frowen * cabell * reichen * von * ueisidelen*'. 18.5 grams (188 grams total), 73mm (3"). From an important private family collection; acquired on the European art market in the 1980s, and thence by descent. This scene commemorates the consecration of the Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln by Bishop Konrad of Constanta. On the night of 13th September 948 AD, the consecration of this chapel was to be ordained by Christ himself and his angel, and the bishop after arriving the next day at the temple heard the words 'Stand away, brother, God himself ordained the chapel'. In the literature on the subject, the characters described above are known as 'the type of ordination of an angel' (German: Engelweihe) and appear repeatedly in the form of casts on 15th century church bells. At the end of the 14th century Einsiedeln was one of the most important pilgrimage centres, where the first miracle was recorded in 1388 AD. Very fine condition.
