SLATER JOHN C.: (1900-1976) American physicist who made major contributions to the theory of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids and also made major contributions to microwave electronics. During World War II his work on microwave transmission, carried out partly at the Bell Laboratories and in association with the MIT Radiation Laboratory, was of major importance in the development of radar. Manuscript D.S., John C Slater, one page, 4to, n.p. (Cambridge, Massachusetts?), 2nd June 1952. Slater responds to a researcher's questionnaire entitled World Inquiry, with their manuscript questions at the head of the page, '1. Were your scientific “debut” easy or difficult? 2. Did means of living…..enable you to make yourself known in science? Or did you live solely through your work of laboratory? 3. What work (or what discovery) made yourself more famous? Which do you consider as your masterpiece?'. Slater provides his answers beneath, in full, '1). Easy. 2) I was assisted by fellowship, assistantships, and other grants at Harvard University, where I studied. As soon as I attained my doctor's degree, I received a traveling fellowship from Harvard for a year's study in Europe; after that I had appointments in the faculty at Harvard, and later at M.I.T. 3) Work in the electronic structure of atoms, molecules, and solids, as determined by wave mechanics', adding his signature below. PIERCE JOHN R.: (1910-2002) American engineer and author of science fiction who worked extensively in the fields of radio communication, microwave technology and computer music. Pierce coined the term transistor. A good T.L.S., J. R. Pierce, one page, 4to, Murray Hill, New Jersey, 31st January 1956, to Henri Corbiere, on the printed stationery of Bell Telephone Laboratories. Pierce responds to his correspondent's enquiries in four numbered paragraphs, in part, 'I became known in science entirely through my work at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. This has been my only source of income. I was educated largely at the expense of my parents, although I received some university support during my graduate years. I think that my work leading to the “Pierce gun” is most widely known. I have also become known through my work on traveling-wave tubes. I do not consider any of my work a masterpiece. Rather, I believe that I have done a good deal of analytical work in the field of high frequency vacuum tubes which has been in the forefront of contemporary work……Jacques-Louis David….is perhaps not one of the great geniuses of painting but his pictures are always professionally expert. If I can approach such expertness in my field of engineering, I feel I will have accomplished enough'. A letter of interesting content. VG
