A VERY LARGE ‘FIVE-HUNDRED HUNDRED RAKAN, KARAKO AND KARASHISHI’ SATSUMA EARTHENWARE LIDDED INCENSE BURNER, KORO JAPAN, TAISHO TO SHOWA PERIOD The body of globular shape resting on three caryatid legs shaped as karako (boys), with a waisted neck and an everted rim, two handles shaped as karashishi (foo dogs) and a bell-shaped lid topped by a large finial also shaped as a karashishi. The lid is open-worked to several points to let the incense smoke go out.The outer part is finely painted with the ‘Five hundred rakans’ theme (or ‘Five hundred arhats’). There is an inscription on the inner part of the lid (unidentified because partially vanished). H: 41 cm Note: The ‘Five hundred arhats rakans’ is a Buddhist art subject developed in China featuring large numbers of Indian wise men usually accompanied by servants. The origin of the grouping is unknown, although several Chinese texts mention rakan as protective saints, who guard the Buddhist law until the coming of Miroku (Maitreya), the Buddha of the Future. The Chinese believe that Five hundred arhats inhabited a peak beyond the Stone Bridge Shakkyou on Mount Tiantai.
A LARGE FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN ‘NINE PEACHES’ PLANTER OR JARDINIÈRE CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY Of bell shape, it is finely painted in famille rose enamels with the blossoming branches of peach tree charged with nine peaches. The top of the rim is painted in blue enamels with a flower design. H: 24,5 cm - 36 cm Provenance: - a private collection; - Juan Carlos Katzenstein (1925-2018), an Argentinian Diplomat, who was an Ambassador in Beijing, China, from December 6, 1975 to January 2, 1978, and later to the Holy See (Vatican) and to the Sovereign Order of Malta from 1989 to 1991 (by repute). Note: Peaches have traditionally been associated with Daoism and longevity. In mythology, the goddess Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, owned a vast peach orchard, and it was said that anyone who ate the fruit would become immortal. As such, peaches are considered sacred and auspicious, and when used as a decorative motif, convey wishes for longevity and good fortune. A GROUP OF FOUR (4) YIXING TEAPOTS CHINA, 20TH CENTURY The first one, relief-decorated, partially enameled and shaped as a plum tree trunk, is further embellished with blossomed plum tree branches. The base is stamped with the mark ‘宜興紫砂’, lit. ‘yíxìng zǐshā’. The second one, shaped as a bell, is further inscribed with a seal script calligraphy and bears the same mark. The third one is of cylindrical shape. The fourth one is shaped as a lotus leaf, rests on three shell shaped feet, and has a frog on its lid. It bears a mark to the inner part of the lid.
