A late 19c French mantel clock in mahogany case with inverted bell top with brass carrying handle. The case front is inlaid with floral designs in brass and mother of pearl. The 4.5"diam white convex dial has Arabic numerals, plain steel hands and a cast brass bezel. The movement is rack striking on a gong and the clock stands 17" tall overall.
A mid 19c English double fusee bracket clock in cast brass Gothic revival case, the front and sides covered in Gothic tracery and having a crenellated top with central finial. It has cast bracket feet in the form of foliage (one detached) and the 5.5"diam silvered dial has Roman numerals and a cast brass bezel (glass missing), the double fusee movement is train driven and has an anchor escapement and is rack striking on a bell. The clock stands 16" tall overall.
A mid 18c thirty hour longcase clock , the 11" square brass dial signed John Lee of Cookham on the silvered chapter ring. The spandrels are of the vase and scroll pattern and the dial centre is matted and engraved with birds. The birdcage movement has rope drive, anchor escapement and countwheel striking on a bell. It is contained in an oak case with broken arch pediment to the case with three finials and rudimentary carving above the dial. The hood door has attached plain columns and the trunk has long rectangular trunk door flanked by quarter columns, the plain base has a tall plain plinth, 84" tall overall.

An early 19th century French gilt and patinated bronze figural clock, the case modelled as an oil lamp, surmounted by female figure, originally holding an arrow over a flame (arrow missing), her other hand holding an ewer, raised on a gilt socle and elliptical base on gilt bun feet, the gilt metal Roman numeral dial with black hands, with drum movement and outside count wheel striking the hour and half on a bell with pendulum (16 inches), (examine ewer for repairs and reverse of clock).
Five Waterford glass custard cups and five similar: the former with applied loop handle with scroll terminal the slightly swelling body cut at the base with a band of blazes, 7 cm high, two further of broadly similar form, but without cut decoration and three with loop handles with notched and scroll terminals the footed bell shaped body with comb moulding to the base, circa 1820-30, two of the former and two of the latter cracked. A French Corniche carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, with a platform cylinder escapement, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the retailer Charles Voisin, the initials CV within a rectangle, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and blued steel Brequet moon hands, height: 16cm (with handle), 13cm (without handle). *Biography Charles Voisin was a Parisian retailer who was supplied with various grades of carriage clocks to sell by a number of different makers, including Alfred Drocourt.
Japy Freres, Paris, a French gilt-metal mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Japy Freres with the serial number 2720, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and signed with the retailer`s name Withington, Taunton, the gilt-metal case having a classical female figure leaning against a decorative pillar with musical instruments to the top and a pair of doves to the side, standing on a shaped, decorative base stamped to the rear with the casemaker`s name P.H. Mourey, all standing on a further gilt-wood base, height: 45cm (with base) * Biography. Originally set up circa 1771 in Beaucourt by Georges Frederic Japy for the purpose of making ebauches (blanks) for watch movements, by 1809 they were also producing clock movement blanks. By 1810, Pierre`s sons Frederic-Guillaume, Louis-Frederic and Jean-Pierre had joined the firm and soon after the death of Frederic in 1812, his sons renamed the firm Japy Freres et Cie. * William Withington is recorded as working at 11, High Street, Taunton, Somerset and then 55, North Street in the mid 19th century. In the 1890`s he moved to Axminster in Devon working at West Street and then Lyme Street.
Japy Freres, Paris, a boulle mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker of the blanc roulant Japy Freres, Paris along with the signature of the clockmaker John Hall, Paris, the cast brass dial with blue Roman numerals to the individual white enamel cartouches, with decorative blued steel hands, the waisted boulle case with engraved brass inlay to the red tortoiseshell with further boulle work to the inside floor and rear door, surmounted by a gilt-metal figure of a seated boy playing a musical instrument, with a glazed panel to the front, height: 40cm. * Biography. For details of Japy Freres see lot no. 817 * Notes John Hall is recorded as working as a clockmaker and retailer in Paris in circa 1880.
A late-Victorian Black Forest mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and stamped PR within a cartouche to the backplate, the carved wood case with foliate decoration, two goats to the top and two smaller goats to the base, all with beaded eyes, the dial with black Roman numerals to each individual shaped enamel cartouche and blued steel hands, height: 55cm.
Jonathan Lowndes, London, a walnut longcase clock:, the month duration movement with five latched pillars striking the hours on a bell, with an outside countwheel, the twelve-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and five-minute outer markings, with meeting arrow-head half-hour markings, and further half-quarter engraved decoration, signed either side of VI o`clock Jonat. Lowndes, London the matted dial centre with ringed winding holes, a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture with engraved surround and blued steel hands, the walnut flat-topped case having three-quarter columns to the hood with cast brass capitals, the trunk with cross-banding to the burr-walnut veneered door and a glazed lenticle, with panelled sides, the base with crossbanding to the burr walnut panel, height: 212 cms. * Biography Jonathan Lowndes was a well respected maker working in Pall Mall, London at the turn of the 18th century. He was a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmaker`s from 1680 and a steward in 1696. A number of his clocks and watches are known in various museums and collections including a number that were in the famous Wetherfidd collection.
Valentine Downs, Louth, an oak longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and half-hour fleur-de-lys markings, the matted dial centre with engraved decoration, an inset subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, cast brass c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and blued steel hands, the arch having a boss engraved with the makers name Vale. Downs, Louth and further c-scroll spandrels, the oak flat-topped case having fretwork panels above the dial, applied three-quarter columns to the trunk, a shaped top to the door, shaped plinth to the base, with a shallow caddy to the top of the hood, height: 207cm. * Biography Valentine Downs is recorded as working in Louth, Lincolnshire circa 1791.
Jacob Lovelace, Exon, longcase clock: the thirty-hour duration plated movement with finned and latched pillars, striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the eleven-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, decorative half-hour markings and signed below Jacob Lovelace, Exon, with a matted centre, wheatear border engraving, crown & cherub spandrels and a single blued steel hand, the later mahogany veneered case with boxwood crossbanding, glass lenticle to the trunk door and barley twist pillars to the flat-top hood, height: 204cm. * Biography Jacob Lovelace is probably Exeter`s most celebrated maker and the maker of the famous Exeter Clock, the remains of which are in Exeter Museum having been bombed during the Liverpool blitz of the Second World War. He worked in St. Stephen`s parish from circa 1712 until 1750 and died on the 30th of November 1755. * Literature, Clive Ponsford ` Time in Exeter ` pages 70-80.
