William Gray, London, a contemporary brass lantern clock: the thirty-hour, weight-driven movement having a verge escapement and striking the hours on a bell, with countwheel strike, the dial engraved with floral decoration to the centre, the silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and having a single blued-steel hand, the centre engraved with the name William Gray, London, the brass case with turned pillars to the four corners, a silvered bell below the bell straps, and cresting to the front and sides, height 38 cms.
Delepine-Canchy, an ormolu mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark for Delepine, the name Pons within a roundel and dated 1827 (see note below) along with the serial number 783, and retailer's name Deniere à Paris, the round white enamel dial having black Roman hour numerals and blued steel spade hands, the decorative ormolu case with ormolu floral and c-scroll mounts with a silvered figure of a cherub sat to the front holding a wine goblet and bunch of grapes, height 35 cms.* Biography Delepine-Canchy of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont took over the movement making business of Honore Pons in circa 1846 before becoming Delepine-Barrois, supplying movements to amongst others Henri Jacot. They continued to use the Pons trademark stamp which shows the award in 1827 of a gold medal. They were themselves taken over by their near neighbours in the town, Couaillet frères, in circa 1913, headed by Armand Couaillet.

Japy freres a Paris, A French Victorian ormolu mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, the backplate stamped with the trademark for Japy frères à Paris and numbered 9799, with a starburst bob to the pendulum, the grey marble dial signed for the retailer James Neill & Co, Belfast, and having applied raised gilt Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, the ormolu case with three cherubs at play around four fluted pillars to which the clock movement is seated and a further truncated pillar between, height 45 cms.* Notes For details of Japy frères see lot no. 929
Richard Chater, London, a pad-top late-Georgian bracket clock: the eight-day duration, double-fusee movement with anchor escapement, border engraving to the backplate and striking the hours on a bell, the silvered brass break-arch dial engraved with black Roman numerals, a strike/silent dial to the arch and the maker's name to the centre Richd Chater, London, with blued steel spade hands, the break-arch mahogany case having a cast brass handle to the top of the brass bound pad, fishscale frets to the sides and standing on brass bracket feet, height 40 cms.* Biography Two Richard Chater's are recorded as working in London in the late Georgian period, the first apprenticed in 1774, free of the Clockmaker's Company in 1781 and died in 1811, the second working from circa 1785, being the son of James Chater.
An Edward VII silver presentation cigarette case, maker James Bell & Louis Willmott, London, 1904: in the Russian style, the hammered case with lift-up lid having an applied rose diamond and ruby set Royal Cypher, with hinged strike pad to one end, contained in its Collingwood & Co fitted case, 9cm. long, 5.45ozs.
Nathaniel Style, London, an ebonised bell-top bracket clock: the eight-day duration, double-fusee movement fully engraved to the backplate with rococo decoration, with the anchor escapement having rise and fall regulation to the pendulum and striking the hours on a bell, the brass break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and outer Arabic five-minute numerals, the matted centre with date aperture and 'false-pendulum' aperture with an engraved rear, with cast-brass spandrels to the four corners, the arch engraved with rococo decoration and with two raised silvered subsidiary dials for 'strike/silent' and regulation, with an inset silvered plaque between engraved with the maker's name Nathl. Style, London, the bell-top ebonised case having curved canted corners, brass fret-work to the front and sides, a brass carrying handle to the top and wooden feet, height 49 cms.* Biography Nathaniel Style is recorded as working at Wood Street, Cheapside, London becoming free of the Clockmakers Company in 1725 and retiring in 1773.

Jane Eyre: an Autobiography, 3 vol., third edition, half-titles, vol.1 with 2pp. advertisements to front and 16pp. publisher's catalogue dated May 1848 at rear, vol.3 with 8pp. Opinions of the Press at rear, some light toning and occasional light finger-marking to margins, original variant green cloth, recased, later spine labels, spines discoloured, rubbed and marked, [Smith 2 pp.29-30], 8vo, Smith, Elder and Co., 1848. ⁂ A rare variant, possibly trial binding, unrecorded by Smith, we can trace no other copy in a like binding.
