* Norfolk/Cambridgeshire - Drainage of the Fens. A manuscript indenture of 13 parts concerning the Sessions of Sewers, 16 July 1631, between the Right Honourable Francis Earl of Bedford and his adventurers, Oliver Earl of Bullingbrooke, Edward Lord Gorges, Sir Robert Heath, Knight, His Majesty`s Attorney General, Sir Miles Sandys of Wilberton, in the Isle of Ely, in the County of Cambridge, Sir John Charleton, Sir William Russell, Sir Robert Bevel, Sir Thomas Tyringham, Sir Robert Bell, William Sames and Samuel Spalding, calligraphic initial, 4 chisel-slits (from disinfection?), a little minor soiling but ink strong and legible, 64 x 74 cm with twelve red wax seals appended, all largely complete with a few impressions still faintly visible, endorsed. Francis, Earl of Bedford, undertook the public work of draining the Fens, the Earl and his adventurers being due to receive from the proprietors 95,000 acres being nearly a third part of the whole. The Earl of Bedford employed Cornelius Vermuyden as engineer, who become involved for the second phase of construction in the 1650s. The scheme was imposed despite huge opposition from locals who were losing their livelihoods based on fishing and wildfowling. Fenmen known as the Fen Tigers tried to sabotage the drainage efforts. Despiau..., with Several Corrections and Additions, Particularly a Large Table of the Chances or Odds at Play, The whole recommended as an useful Book for Schools, by Dr. Hutton, Professor of Mathematics, at Woolwich, 1st English edition, London: for G. Kearsley; Bell and Bradfute; and Brash and Reid, by W. Glendinning, 1801, spotting and dust-soiling mostly to title, mid 19th c. half calf, gilt and blind decorated spine, extremities slightly rubbed, 12mo. The first French edition was published in London in 1799 under the title Choix d` amusements physiques et mathematiques. The volume contains a large collection of mathematical and physical curiosities, including chapters on arithmetic ÒTo arrange 30 criminals in such a manner as to save 15 of them, &c.Ó, ÒA lady lamenting that her age was triple that of her daughterÓ, Palingenesy Ò... the art of reviving the dead and making the image of a deceased person appear in a glass jarÓ, and amusing secrets ÒTo make people in a room have a hideous appearanceÓ. A late George III mahogany long case clock, the case with moulded cornice above a pair of column supports and a rectangular moulded trunk door, raised on a shaped plinth base, the 11 inch floral painted Roman dial set a 30 hour movement with anchor escapement, striking bell. A longcase clock, the 28 cm square brass dial, having Roman numerals, signed Taylor Bridgnorth 606, fitted a 30 hour movement striking on a bell, in an extensively carved oak case, 207 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by RB Very much in a market fresh condition, the matt centre has some sort of gilt looking paint to it, the silvered dial is with awful varnish which makes it look brass and the spandrels have been painted to match the centre. The movement is slightly loose on its (later) seat board. The case, no glass to the hood door, carving all Victorian, the whole of the backboard has been replaced at some point, modern trunk door lock, hinges weak. Overall now requiring some work, with key, pendulum and single weight.
