An Edgar Simpson silver belt buckle, rectangular, pierced and cast with two swimming fish amongst turbulent water, on black silk belt, stamped ES hallmark once, 13.5cm. wide Provenance Victor Arwas The Art Nouveau Buckle with Arts and Crafts Christie's South Kensington, 27th November 2007 lot 12 (mark incorrectly listed as CES), A private collection of Guild of Handicraft silver and jewellery. Catalogue notes Edgar Gilstrap Simpson (1867-1945) Born in Basford, Nottingham, was the son of Henry Simpson a lace manufacturer and Elizabeth Gilstrap. He initially worked in the lace industry before setting up his own studio to concentrate on craft and silver making in Nottingham. He exhibited work at both the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1900 and also the Vienna Secession exhibition of 1902. His designs are a blend of the English Arts and Crafts and the continental Art Nouveau and Secessionist styles. Although his marked jewellery is rare, he is believed to have supplied additional designs to Charles Horner, this design of leaping scaly fish or dolphins can be considered typical be it for a waist clasp, bell push or even as a decorative key.

As the Primordial Buddha, Vajrasattva represents the essence of the Buddhahood and is frequently invoked for a rite of purification before undertaking most Tibetan Buddhist tantric instruction. The broad, flat shape of the lotus petals around the base, and the way in which the scarf framing the figure is cast with supporting rods, indicates this image was cast in West Tibet within the 13th or 14th century. STATUE DE VAJRADHARA EN LAITON INCRUSTÉ D'ARGENTTSANG, TIBET CENTRAL, XVE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4840 24 cm (9 1/2 in.) high Footnotes:A SILVER-INLAID BRASS FIGURE OF VAJRADHARA TSANG, CENTRAL TIBET, 15TH CENTURY 藏中 十五世紀 銅錯銀金剛總持像 Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s The primordial Buddha, Vajradhara, crosses a vajra and bell before his chest (vajrahumkara mudra), symbolizing the perfected union of wisdom and compassion that is Buddha-consciousness, and into which the human ego can blissfully evaporate. His sublime body is clad in a lower garment with patterned floral hems, and a scarf that drapes over his shoulders before sweeping around the elbows and falling to his sides. His crown consists of five tall leaves, representing each of the Five Presiding Buddhas. The sculpture is a superior example of the non-gilded, brassy, and frequently inlaid style favored in Tsang province of Central Tibet. This alloy can be brought to a high polish, achieving an attractive buttery patina, as seen on the figure's back. Vajradhara's squarish countenance and accentuated smile are also characteristic of Tsang style. A 15th-century date is supported by the particular rippling of the lower garment around the shins, and the long, densely packed lotus petals around the base, which Tibetan craftsmen adopted from imperial Chinese Buddhist bronzes that were sent to powerful Tsang monasteries by the Yongle emperor (1403-24). Similar Tsang bronzes of Vajradhara are kept in the Johkang, Lhasa; the Rubin Museum of Art, New York (C.2005.37.1); and a private collection (see von Schroeder, Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, Vol. II, 2001, p. 1193, no. 323B; HAR 90823; and HAR 30586, respectively).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

'Vajra Being') is identified by the vajra he holds before his chest and the bell he cradles against his hip. He represents the Primordial Buddha, and as such is identical with Vajradhara. Sometimes Vajrasattva is also considered a sixth Presiding Buddha (Tathagata). He is usually invoked during a purification rite undertaken before most tantric instruction in Tibetan Buddhism. Seated in double-lotus posture (vajraparyankasana) above a double-lotus base, the Primordial Buddha raises his chin to impart an uplifting expression. The flared design of his earrings follow the aesthetic traditions of the Kathmandu Valley, and is one of several features indicating the bronze was produced by a Newari master craftsman for a Tibetan patron. A fine white statuary marble inlaid Fireplace, in the manner of Pietro Bossi, the scagliola inlay in the Neo-classical style, the moulded shelf over a central urn issuing leaf swags on a rectangular tablet flanked to either side with a panel inlaid with a roundel with bell flower swags and ribbon bows, the jambs with similar inlay each headed with a two handled urn raised on breakfront blocks, 58" x 70" (148cms x 178cms). Henry O'Neill (1798 - 1880) "Monasterboice, County Louth, with couple praying by the Round Tower showing numerous Celtic Crosses and Graves, c. 1840," O.O.B., 42cms x 51cms (16 1/2" x 20"). Exhibition label verso "The Bell Gallery, 3 Alfred Street, Belfast." In a painting that clearly echoes George Petrie?s 1838 watercolour The Last Circuit of Pilgrims at Clonmacnoise, O?Neill depicts the round tower at Monasterboice, surrounded by high crosses and monastic ruins. Founded by the Abbot Boethius in the sixth century, Monasterboice is located some five miles north of Drogheda. Although nothing remains of the original buildings, there are the ruins of two churches and three sculptured high crosses, all dating from around the tenth century AD. The churches and crosses are depicted in O?Neill?s watercolour, which also shows the round tower with its distinctive jagged top. In the foreground, amidst tilted gravestones, two figures kneel, deep in prayer, before a carved cross. Overgrown with ivy, the outlines of the ruined churches are barely discernible. With the setting sun partly obscured by the slender tower, and a cloud-flecked sky paling from pink-tinted hues on the horizon to pale blue, the painting has all the characteristic of a Romantic landscape, reminiscent of paintings by JMW Turner, Francis Danby or Petrie. Today, the buildings have been stripped of foliage, the graves neatened, and the site, while far better tended, lacks something of the Romantic mystery conveyed in O?Neill?s watercolour. While George Petrie held that the ancient round towers of Ireland were of Christian origin, O?Neill, like Henry O?Brien, believed they were pagan buildings, later adopted by Christians. He set out to publish a multi-volume analysis of Irish round towers, but in the event only one volume was published, in 1877, detailing the four round towers of County Dublin. *We would like to acknowledge the assistance of Dr. Peter Murray in catalogue these lots.
