BELL ALEXANDER GRAHAM: (1847-1922) Scottish-born American Scientist & Inventor, credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. A.L.S., A. Graham Bell, four pages, 8vo, Salem, Massachusetts, 9th January 1874, to [Professor Abel S.] Clarke ('Dear Friend') at the American Asylum for Deaf Mutes. Bell states that he has just returned from Canada and seen the Annals, remarking 'Let me thank you most sincerely for the very excellent way in which you have defended Visible Speech. It gave me great pleasure to see your article' and continues to add that he had intended to visit his correspondent, but fate had intervened, explaining 'On New Year's Day, our horse, who has always been a very quiet inoffensive animal, took a new departure and rushed off on his own account, leaving me on my back in the middle of the road, while he went off with the carriage, and my sister. My sister jumped into a snow drift and escaped with a sprained ankle. I received some slight injuries….'. Bell further informs his correspondent that he is trying to arrange a convention of teachers of visible speech 'for the purpose of comparing notes and discussing plans for the advancement of the system', confirming that all of the teachers of the Clarke Institution and Boston School have agreed to meet in Worcester on 24th January and asking if his correspondent and Miss Sweet will be able to join them, adding 'I think that periodical conventions of teachers of visible speech to discuss practical points…..will do much for the advancement of the cause' and concluding that he envisages a session of around five hours thereby allowing the participants to travel and return to their respective towns on the same day. An early Victorian flame mahogany tavern type drop dial wall clock, with circular bezel and moulded insert hood, full length trunk door, crossbanded and arch topped, the 36cm diameter circular painted dial having Roman hour numerals, subsidiary second ring and marked C J Thelwall, 97 Oxford Street, Manchester, eight day movement striking a bell, 149cm high.
A late 17thC hook and spike clock movement, with later adaptations, 20cm square brass dial with cast amarini applied spandrels, the chapter ring having Roman hour numerals and diamond dividers and marked Jno. Worsfold Dorking, 16cm bell. John Worsfold died 15th November 1768, further references to 1755.

An 18th Century wine glass with bell shaped bowl with teardrop on a drawn stem and circular base with folded foot, 16cm high, and two others both with conical bowls, drawn stem and circular bases, 14.5cm high CONDITION REPORT: 127 - Large glass, foot rim has flaw with black deposit to surface, scratches and small flaw to bowl. One of the two similar glasses has a minute rim chip and some scratches to foot.
