A George II tortoiseshell japanned eight-day longcase clock, John Dewe, London, circa 1740, the five pillar rack and bell striking movement with anchor escapement and 12 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and applied signature plate John Dewe, LONDON to centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers and Arabic five minutes to outer track, the angles applied with female mask and scroll cast spandrels beneath arch with subsidiary Strike/Silent selection dial flanked by dolphin cast mounts, the case decorated in polychrome and gilt with chinoiseries and foliate designs on a simulated tortoiseshell ground with moulded cornice over three quarter columns to hood and trunk with figural garden pavilion landscape raised decoration to the break-arch door, the plinth with conforming decoration to front and double skirt base, 222cm (87.5ins) high. John Dewe Senior is recorded in Baillie G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as apprenticed in 1726 gaining his freedom of the Clockmaker's Company in 1733, before moving to Sothwark where he worked until around 1764.
