CARDEW, GLORIA. GUILD OF WOMEN-BINDERS A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, CIRCA 1900published J.M Dent & Co., London 1895, with plates illustrated by R. Anning Bell and hand-coloured by Gloria Cardew, bound in calf, probably by the Guild of Women-Binders, the cover worked in relief with the figure of Puck and other fairies, bears paper label pasted to the interior and bearing inscription THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN THIS BOOK WERE COLOURED BY HAND BY MISS GLORIA CARDEWFootnote: Literature: Kaplan, Wendy (ed.) Scotland Creates: 5000 Years of Art and Design, Weidenfeld & Nicholson 1990, pp.152-3, fig 10.3 where a book bound by Annie S Macdonald is illustrated Note: Although Gloria Cardew was not a bookbinder, “many books coloured by her were bound by members of the Guild” (Tidcombe, p. 126). This is largely due to Frank Karslake (1851-1920), who acted as an agent of hers in 1898 (IBIS Journal, 2014, p. 75). Cardew was a prolific hand-colourist of book illustration and often worked for the Guild, as well as the Kelmscott and Vale Presses. Little is known of her and it was thought that her name was a pseudonym, although her photograph was published in the 1898 Guild of Women-Binders exhibition catalogue of 1898. Karslake established the Guild of Women-Binders in May 1898 at 61, Charing Cross Road, London in the same building as his other bindery, The Hampstead Bindery. The bindery produced lavishly-bound books in the highest quality material and took on many different binders, such as Annie S. MacDonald, Jessie McGibbon, Phoebe Traquair, Florence de Rheims, and Karslake’s two daughters, Constance & Olive Karslake. A similar binding held in the National Library of Scotland by Annie S. Macdonald (1849-1924) shows the same technique as the current example in moulded natural morocco. Macdonald, a friend of Traquair re-introduced the craft of artistic bookbinding in Edinburgh in the mid-1890s and she, Traquair and others were affiliated with not only to the new Edinburgh Arts and Crafts Club but to the Guild of Women-Binders from 1898. The subject of the current lot is based on the painting Puck Fleeing before the Dawn by David Scott (1806-1849), currently held in the National Gallery of Scotland (NG 992).

Included in this lot we have a Fire Dept No 9 Hook and Ladder metal pedal car originating from the 1950's. The piece shows steel sheeting construction with a set of foot pedals. The car shows a deep red color with stainless steel accents and yellow designs. The piece shows stainless steel arches across the back with two wooden ladders held on the arches. The hood of the toy shows a metal bell with a red light with a switch on the side. The side of the pedal car is marked "Fire Dept Engine No 9 - Hook And Ladder 9. The piece shows good condition overall with some light wear. The car measures 44 1/2" long by 15 1/4" wide by 24" tall.

For your consideration is this large brass sleigh bells on harness leather circa 1920's. There are 28 brass bells shown on this large strip of harness leather and are connected to the leather belt via brass tacks that snap through the leather to the bell itself. the sleigh bells show good consistent jingle and is on a thick strip of harness leather with brass buckle. The condition of these sleigh bells is good with some wear to the leather and a slight patina shown on some of the brass bells and a dark browning to the harness leather. The measurements of these sleigh bells are 73 1/2" x 1 1/4"

For your bidding pleasure is a large antique leather Montana sleigh bell collar. This leather collar set of sleigh bells showing a slightly worn strap of leather; the length of leather is shown in good condition with slight damage to the male end of buckle strap. The sleigh bell collar is missing three bells one nearly center to the collar and two at the very end nearest the buckle. There are 33 bells total on this collar all with their jingle intact and are 1 3/4" across. The measurement of this collar is 89" long.

In this lot are two antique bells. The first is an antique 1800'S ornate hotel lobby desk bell. This bell has Flure De Lis and hearts on it. The upper part of the bell still shows bright silver while the lower parts has some wear. The bell measures 3 1/2" across the base and 2 1/4" tall. This bell is believed to be well over one hundred years old, and still rings with a bright tone. The next bell is a brass teachers bell. The bell is on a wooden handle with a brass knob on the end. The bell part is 2 1/4" tall and 2 1/2" wide at the bottom, The total bell is 5" tall. The bell has some wear but still rings with an authority to bring the children to attention.

A 19th century Lancashire longcase clock, John Bell, Burnley, the painted arch dial decorated with pink roses in the spandrels beneath a sun/moon arch with vignettes of a paddle steamer and an Alpine scene, eight-day movement, within a hood with swan-neck pediment, the door flanked by baluster turned columns, the broad trunk with ogee arched door on a base with scroll-carved apron, with winder, weights and pendulum.
